To not put the toaster in the cupboard?!

CeruleanSal · 24/11/2023 15:10

Obviously not a serious topic but…

I keep my toaster on the side in the kitchen. I regularly visit my brother and sister in law and they keep theirs in a low cupboard. I find this insane. Like me they use it daily (if not multiple times a day) and they’re forever getting it out and putting it back. Their kitchen is not tiny or anything, it’s probably larger than mine.
I just want to know… is this normal and am I a weirdo for having my toaster out all the time?!

YABU - I keep my toaster in a cupboard
YANBU - what is this lunacy, my toaster is out on the side!

Yabu for having a toaster at all.

I have not recovered from the "mouse in toaster" incident, and it was 30 years ago

Ireland: Republic of - the toaster is kept on the worktop whatever your religion. It is never put in the press. Up in Northern Ireland, the prods put their toaster in the CUPBOARD, and make lovely traybakes. An ice cream cone in NI is a "poke" (that made me snort my 99 from Teddies I tell ya). Those in the know will know....

My pils, Irish catholic farmers always kept the toaster in the press. No NI blood, and definitely no NI protestant blood, at all in them to explain it.

Fil was a devout catholic. Now he is dead, it doesn't always get put away so promptly. Mil is obviously rebelling.

Protestants put the toaster in a cupboard, catholics keep it on the countertop.

Are you a Catholic and sil a protestant who is imposing her protestant traditions on your dB?

I'm a catholic who recently realised a long held ambition to have a cupboard with plugs and work surface inside it to hold my electrical appliances

Bloody love my cupboard. It contains toaster and air fryer!

Shakeylegs · 24/11/2023 19:43

My mum puts hers in the cupboard. It is utterly insane.

She also keeps a dustpan and brush on the lid of the kitchen bin. So every single time anyone wants to put something in the bin they have to remove it, hold it/put it somewhere, put the thing in the bin, then put it back. It is genuinely more upsetting than war.

happyasaseagullstealingchips · 24/11/2023 19:43

Northern Irish prod here, mine is out and proud, I'm Presby maybe it's the COI ones hide theirs away and have notions of themsells 😂.

I can confirm however I make amazing traybakes, Mars bar and apple sandwiches are a picnic staple, especially for some reason if I'm visiting Drains Bay oddly 🤔

lesdeluges · 24/11/2023 19:44

I'm looking at my kitchen from my perch and scratching my head as to where in God's name I would find room for the toaster in a press. Nope I'm not able to sign up for Protestantism yet.

70sDuvet · 24/11/2023 19:46

BTW in reality it's absolutely NOT an any religion thing.

It came from Derry Girls and poking fun at the "divide" in NI and possibly Ireland?

There was always rumours about what the "other side" did that was odd that "your side" absolutely would not never ever do. Which when you meet the other side you find out all the rumours were the same. The brilliance of being educated in a mixed religion school!

The only things that seem to be actually real are that you'll get a feed of drink at 'most' Catholic wakes but the food is rather plain. At a Protestant funeral you'll get only tea (alcohol is from the devil himself) but the food will be abundant and often made of odd combinations like Mars bar and apple sandwiches and yes the trusty Prod especially Presbyterian traybakes.

I want a mix of both when I go! Fifteens and pints galore please

DownNative · 24/11/2023 19:47

Abhannmor · 24/11/2023 16:40

Closet Protestant? If she was a good Catholic it would be a 'press' surely. Protestant also make better cakes and tarts by repute. We'd need to test them.

We simply must know if they're West or East of the Bann! 🙈

For those who don't know, the Bann is Northern Ireland's longest river and a natural dividing line between Northern Ireland's west and east.

West is the Badlands...🙈🤪

It’s a breakfast pantry that solves all problems. Everything hidden when wanted, no need to move

Similar to this picture (not mine, mine is smaller and messier). Make mess. Fling doors closed, kitchen looks clean

My alcove worktop does this in a smaller way with cupboard high above and below but an open worktop that is very shallow and just right for toaster, kettle, book slope.

To not put the toaster in the cupboard?!

My kitchen has a toaster, breadbin, kettle, box for napkins, 2 bowls of fruit, kitchen roll, bowl of onions, microwave, pot of wooden spoons, condiments for cooking, food waste bin and tea and coffee making stuff all on the worktop. It looks clean, tidy and very much lived in. Can't bear the sterile, immaculate look.

your food waste bin is visible? Like just out on the floor? Couldn't live like that!

DownNative · 24/11/2023 19:53

Wolvesart · 24/11/2023 19:06

So where do people keep their bread then? Do we not have bread bins? People must have something on their work tops otherwise it looks a bit wrong surely. Like a bare mantelpiece or empty shelves.

Growing up, my mother had a bread bin on the worktop at the end. Hasn't had one for years now.

I don't have a bread bin either, so bread goes in the fridge. 🤷‍♂️

My worktop has a kettle, retro tea canister, retro coffee cabister and microwave with cables hidden in mini trunking. I will build a hidden lift thingy one day to house the kettle, toaster and microwave. Push of a button and....voila!

Might do one for TV in living room too....🙈🤔

Tighginn · 24/11/2023 19:57

The classic Derry girls episode, friends across the barricade blackboard.

This was the first thing I thought too 🤣🤣🤣

I feel every syllable of this.

And the NI toaster thing was IN Derry Girls but it's not FROM Derry Girls, it's much older than that. Most of the stuff in that scene wasn't made up, they're real stereotypes/jokes. Protestants hating Abba was a new one to me though Grin

CeruleanSal · 24/11/2023 15:23

Very interested in this Protestant-catholic Irish angle to the debate!

Yes me too. I'm Catholic but my toaster stays on the worktop, so I've probably lapsed.😁

AnnaKorine · 24/11/2023 15:40

Life is too short to be putting away the toaster every day. But then I think the same about coats and bags… I’m definitely not a domestic goddess.

Nor me and I don't care 🤷

Ittastesvile · 24/11/2023 20:12

I keep mine out but I'd be happy for it to live in the cupboard, I probably only use it every other day. I do like a clear worktop.

But I don't really have the cupboard space. Breadmaker stays out too which is very bulky, I'd love to hide that! Maybe should try another decluttering purge.

MrsMarzetti · 24/11/2023 20:14

sweetpickle23 · 24/11/2023 15:17

I would think this is a fire hazard! You're not even really meant to position them under cupboards because of the build up of heat. I wouldn't do this!

You don't put it straight back in the cupboard, you eat your toast first then put it away.

daffodilandtulip · 24/11/2023 20:17

I'm team cupboard. I put lots of things away that I only use once a day...

KimberleyClark · 24/11/2023 20:18

We treated ourselves to a Dualit toaster earlier in the year. It’s too bulky to go in a cupboard really and why would you want to hide it?😍

Growlybear83 · 24/11/2023 20:24

Unless you've got a really tiny kitchen, why do people want to keep their worktops clear to the extent that they would keep a toaster in the cupboard? I like to see some of my treasures that I use on the worktops and I think it completely ruins kitchens when they are bare and sterile.

toddlermam · 24/11/2023 20:26

I keep mine in the cupboard but I have a very small kitchen with a huge air fryer that takes up a lot of workspace! So microwave and toaster goes in cupboard (don't use these daily at all tbh) and then air fryer and kettle are kept out

FindingMeno · 24/11/2023 20:28

In the cupboard, for 2 reasons:

  1. I have very little counter space
  1. It stays cleaner.

You may have a point. I’m a (very) lapsed Catholic and my toaster is on the worktop….where toasters are supposed to be. I’ve never heard of anyone IRL hiding their toaster.

i only use the toaster once or twice a week so it wouldn’t cause me that much effort to put it on the cupboard, but why would you?

I agree. A kitchen shouldn’t look like an operating theatre imo.
