To not put the toaster in the cupboard?!

Obviously not a serious topic but…

I keep my toaster on the side in the kitchen. I regularly visit my brother and sister in law and they keep theirs in a low cupboard. I find this insane. Like me they use it daily (if not multiple times a day) and they’re forever getting it out and putting it back. Their kitchen is not tiny or anything, it’s probably larger than mine.
I just want to know… is this normal and am I a weirdo for having my toaster out all the time?!

YABU - I keep my toaster in a cupboard
YANBU - what is this lunacy, my toaster is out on the side!

YANBU. I find that people who don't cook much, tend to put their kitchen tools and appliances in weird, impractical places.

Catza · 24/11/2023 15:28

Life is too short. My grandmother unplugs washing machine after each use. Drives me crazy as well.

Teatrayderby · 24/11/2023 15:29

When I planned my kitchen 'appliance garages' were all the rage. I assumed I'd spend my life trying to clean crumbs out of the corners so didn't opt for one.

CeruleanSal · 24/11/2023 15:29

oh they’ll have a rude awakening when they have kids 😂
Maybe that’s the difference. I have two, they don’t have any as yet.

I'm not sure I'd class making toast as cooking.

But yeah, you're right.

And a special cupboard for the children.

@OchonAgusOchonOh

Apparently if you put layers of tissue paper between each child, and pop a lavender bag in the cupboard with them, it stops them getting eaten by moths while they're in storage.

What is an appliance garage? I'm visualising a garage converted to a utility room but probably wrong.

The only people I know who do this are from Traveller families.

Scampuss · 24/11/2023 15:31

I have 2 toasters (one is for GF) and they are both on the worktop (at different ends).

There are times I would be quite happy for them to be eaten by moths.

My DM has a utility room (which I’d fire bomb and burn down if ever I have to deal with this house) off the kitchen with a larder/pantry there, which has an old (it was her DM’s and is a retro looking one) toaster there as well as a new toaster in the modern new kitchen which is next to it. Both her and stepdad love toast so toasters are used a lot.

They had mice in the utility room and one time a mouse (I think when I stayed there!) was running along the counter next to the toaster (it has a tray for collecting crumbs). Now DM says that toaster is stored in a cupboard there so the mice can’t get to the crumbs in the tray. But her new toaster in the new kitchen is out on a surface.

Mice have gone by the way. Think traps got them all.

cfmtb · 24/11/2023 15:32

I genuinely have never even thought of putting it in a cupboard because it gets used every day. I wish though, I would love clear sides. We have toaster, air fryer, mini George Foreman my DH uses to toast his lunchtime wraps every day and our bread maker out - drives me up the wall but we use them all so frequently!
(I could probably put the bread maker away as it's only twice a week but it's really bloody heavy).
No kettle though as we have a boiling water tap. Maybe I need all coordinating things to make it prettier 😍

Probably makes sense if you're living in a caravan.

Sunshineandflipflops · 24/11/2023 15:33

Mine is out and used multiple times a day buy my dp's sister puts hers away too. They are loaded and it's a top of the range one too...mine is a Breville so it should be the other way round if anything 😂

It's just a cupboard to keep all the things you've bought because you thought they were useful but many of which never get used. Air fryer, bread maker, stand mixer, slow cooker, spiraliser, that sort of thing.

If you get really fancy, you can fit them with roll up doors so you can set them up with and electricity supply and the items on shelves ready to be used and then roll down the doors when you don't want your kitchen to look like a branch of Currys.

NotLactoseFree · 24/11/2023 15:34

I definitely leave it out. Like the kettle. Or the air fryer.

We have a waffle maker. We make waffles at least 4 times a week. I would LOVE to leave the waffle maker out but it takes up so much space I can't. Every single time I am putting it away I curse under my breath. When I go to my sister's house and see her lovely little entire kitchen section with waffle maker, toaster and panini toaster etc, I am insanely jealous.

TravellingT · 24/11/2023 15:34

Ours lives in a cupboard, I don't like having 'stuff' on the worktops other than kettle, coffee machine etc. Microwave is in a hidden cupboard, as is bread bin etc. We had a breakfast pantry built which is basically an appliance garage.

My DM doesn’t do that but refuses to run the washing machine, tumble dryer and dishwasher on over night or when she’s out.

This is despite having a trip switch in the house which works to stop fires… overloading electricity.

She tries to tell me not to leave mine on overnight etc and I just don’t tell her now if I do!

Making toast isn’t cooking

Olika · 24/11/2023 15:36

I would love to keep our toaster on the countertop but we have hardly no space in the small kitchen so we had to start storing it in the cupboard and take out when we use it. It doesn't really matter as we don't use it every day but id we used it every day then definitely I would find permanent slot for it.

DownNative · 24/11/2023 15:36

OchonAgusOchonOh · 24/11/2023 15:16

Protestants put the toaster in a cupboard, catholics keep it on the countertop.

Are you a Catholic and sil a protestant who is imposing her protestant traditions on your dB?

Catholic here - our toaster lives in a low cupboard until we need to use it! Prefer it out of the way and kitchen looking tidier. 🤷‍♂️

Didn't have a toaster growing up, I don't think. Well remember using the grill to toast, especially with loads of cheese on top! slobbers

Lyricallie · 24/11/2023 15:36

Mine is in the cupboard but only because we don’t use it and I started using my air fryer to toast my bagels. My issue is lack of sockets more than anything!

I am a catholic Glaswegian so have heard of the Protestants putting it in the cupboard thing as my posh (read English) grandparents used to to put it in the cupboard.

Christmasisonitsway · 24/11/2023 15:37

Away, only thing out is the kettle.

Oh yes, granny wouldn't leave it unattended either. I think she is more worried about water damage to neighbours than fire. Not sure why she thinks she needs to unplug it though. She doesn't unplug microwave or TV

Very interested in this Protestant-catholic Irish angle to the debate!

Don't be. It's a load of shit. I live in NI, from a protestant family and have never known any relative to put a toaster in the cupboard ffs. Or catholic for that matter.
