To not put the toaster in the cupboard?!

Obviously not a serious topic but…

I keep my toaster on the side in the kitchen. I regularly visit my brother and sister in law and they keep theirs in a low cupboard. I find this insane. Like me they use it daily (if not multiple times a day) and they’re forever getting it out and putting it back. Their kitchen is not tiny or anything, it’s probably larger than mine.
I just want to know… is this normal and am I a weirdo for having my toaster out all the time?!

YABU - I keep my toaster in a cupboard
YANBU - what is this lunacy, my toaster is out on the side!

Yes me too. I'm Catholic but my toaster stays on the worktop, so I've probably lapsed.😁

No, the Catholic position is out. It’s only Protestants who have closeted toasters.

kneehightoacat · 24/11/2023 21:01

My
Cupboards are bursting and full to brim

Lucky them!

Derb · 24/11/2023 21:04

In our new kitchen I got outlets in large pantry type cupboards and I keep mine in there but can be used with the door open and is plugged in so not a faff

CatOnTheCludgy · 24/11/2023 21:20

Ah but is it a Protestant toaster or a Catholic toaster?
That'll be it

CatOnTheCludgy · 24/11/2023 21:25

Maybe it's because Norn Irish bread is soo tasty, that there's literally NO POINT putting it away in the cupboard, sure you'll only need it in a wee minute hey.

Mind you, Catholic people do eat bread hmmmm
It's a tricky one

Nightmanagerfan · 24/11/2023 21:27

OMG I now understand why my Northern Irish Protestant mother keeps the toaster in a drawer!!

echt · 24/11/2023 21:29

Ex-Catholic here and the toaster is on the countertop, but then as a Dualit it is a lovely piece of design. While I would never comment on someone's kitchen preferences, I find the empty surface idea weird; I like a kitchen to look like one.

Our bread is different. Because of transubstantiation. Or something.

Ah yes that'll be it right enough.
We have a mixed marriage microwave, it's kept in the utility room, a bit like no man's land really

TheKnittedCharacter · 24/11/2023 21:44

My kitchen is unmistakably a kitchen, it just doesn’t have clutter. The only things allowed out are based on aesthetics.😂 So the swanky Sage coffee machine is permitted and the KitchenAid has a shelf under the island. But nothing else apart from maybe flowers, a candle, and a bowl full of lemons and limes that get replaced like fresh flowers.

Apart from that, everything else is hidden. Am I a ponce? Yes. But kitchens with stuff all over the place make me twitch. Plus it must be a right old faff to clean the worktops.

WandaWonder · 24/11/2023 21:44

Our toaster will never be in a cupboard but I don't see why someone having one in cupboard if it works for them is a problem?

It does not make me want to put it in a cupboard because if I did it would make it harder for it to talk to the kettle when no one else is around

SkaneTos · 24/11/2023 21:46

I put my toaster in the cupboard (well, not the cupboard, I put in a sort of big, deep kitchen drawer).
I only use the toaster about twice a month (I'm not British), so there is no need for it to be up on the kitchen counter.
When I use it, it is up on the counter. I always let it cool off for an hour or so, before I put it back in the drawer.

Interesting discussion!

microwave In a cupboard?! How?! Those things are heavy!!

My toaster is out on the side, moving it around would make lots of crumbs!

My microwave however is also in a cupboard! There is a plug socket in the cupboard especially for it so I don’t get it out I use it in situe. I have very limited counter space.

Emma2803 · 24/11/2023 22:13

I'm from Tyrone and we had a "big, long press" in our kitchen growing up 🤣 - in case you are wondering it was indeed big and actually tall but long sounded better.

hellomi · 24/11/2023 22:14

I'd love to keep mine in the cupboard, but there's no space. We don't even use it all that often really!

Emma2803 · 24/11/2023 22:15

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 24/11/2023 18:31

Love that episode of Derry Girls.

We laughed when we went to the Netherlands a couple of years ago, and found toasters to be kept in cupboards there too!

That'll be the William of Orange influence 😉🤣

Snort.

maisiemoolou · 24/11/2023 22:40

Mine is on the worktop, only cause it cost me a small fortune and matches the kettle. I like my worktops clear....the Ninja is living on borrowed time!

OchonAgusOchonOh · 24/11/2023 19:24

It's a protestant thing, not a Catholic thing. Catholic toasters are on the worktop.

😂

sleepyscientist · 24/11/2023 18:44

When we had an open plan house it lived in a pantry cupboard to keep the space clutter free. Our current house has a separate kitchen so it's on the bench for now but when the kitchen is done we will include a pantry cupboard

I'd LOVE a pantry! I kind of have space so maybe I'll see if it can be repurposed? The luxury & notions 🤔😄

Madlymumming · 25/11/2023 00:17

But you only have to look at a toaster for it to scatter crumbs! Moving it to a cupboard constantly is going to create a very large crumb situation.

Neverendingstory2 · 25/11/2023 01:08

I have never put mine away, we use it too often to pull it out and plug in every time.

Georgeandzippyzoo · 25/11/2023 01:21

In the words of a PP, mine is out and proud (non Catholic to boot!)

OutOfSyncWithReality · 25/11/2023 01:48

I'd never heard of this before but it's got me thinking. I don't use my toaster more than probably once a week and I do have a tiny kitchen. I use my air fryer more often and that lives in a cupboard. But for the first time I've adulted and got a matching kettle and toaster and don't really want to hide it away - but I could really use the extra space!
