To not put the toaster in the cupboard?!

Obviously not a serious topic but…

I keep my toaster on the side in the kitchen. I regularly visit my brother and sister in law and they keep theirs in a low cupboard. I find this insane. Like me they use it daily (if not multiple times a day) and they’re forever getting it out and putting it back. Their kitchen is not tiny or anything, it’s probably larger than mine.
I just want to know… is this normal and am I a weirdo for having my toaster out all the time?!

YABU - I keep my toaster in a cupboard
YANBU - what is this lunacy, my toaster is out on the side!

I keep our toaster out, on the worktop. I once knew someone who not only put it in the cupboard, but in the box it came in, as well. 😂

I'm from NI and in a group of friends where I'm the only Protestant in a large group of Catholics. So often referred to as the token Prod. It's an NI thing that isn't going away time soon.

When that's derry girls episode came out I was totally ripped apart on WhatsApp with jokes as mine was the only one in a cupboard.....but that's because it's 18 years old and I've dropped it quite a few times (surprisingly when it lived on the worktop) and it had to be retired to the cupboard as it looks like something from the junk yard.

I keep planning to buy a posh one but now I've acquired so many new kitchen gadgets, airfryer, coffee machine, blender etc that we do use everyday that I think the new one will still have to live the cupboard through lack of worktop space.

Och @70sDuvet it's ok, you don't need to fight your inner prod, embrace that toaster cupboard.

TastelessMiserySand · 24/11/2023 17:22

I only voted YABU because I have to keep my toaster in a cupboard, because twice now my insane cat has surreptitiously jumped up on the worktop and pissed in the toaster!! I don't know why, or even how! Her aim must be amazing! However there's only so many times you can be surprised by the smell of burning cat piss (nothing on earth comes close to that hideousness!) before you give up and keep the (new) toaster in a cupboard! 🤣

Wolvesart · 24/11/2023 17:26

It’s something I wouldn’t put in the cupboard. Same with the kettle. If the toaster went away in a cupboard every day then I’d have to pull out the crumb tray thing every day not every other day. In our cottage the kitchen is fitted ingeniously making maximum use of a decent sized but doors heavy space. The toaster and kettle sit on a narrow worktop in an alcove. Below is a cupboard, there’s space for a small bookshelf (it’s a book slope) where a few of my cookbooks live.

I don't do insta so I'm spared Grin

I really like PK but I will miss trying to spot the ad break that Tubridy chose to indulge in something a little stronger.

Oh yeah 😆🍻I'm such a fair weather friend when it comes to RTÉ & literally only watch it for The Toy Show but yeah it should be interesting to see how PK gets on, I like him too

Me too, couldn't tell you the last time I watched. Actually, I probably could, this time last year most likely!

I'm not sure I'd class making toast as cooking.

But yeah, you're right.

I'm not saying that toast is haute cuisine😆, I just mean if you've ever tried to whip up a meal in a non-cook's kitchen, you often find yourself opening drawers and cabinets trying to find the basic tools most cooks have at the ready, like cutting boards, paring knives, sauce pans, spatulas.....

I had a friend that had a fabulous, well-equipped kitchen that she never used except to transfer takeout onto a plate to microwave, and when I offered to fix her an omelette, I found the task to be more complicated than I'd anticipated because the necessary tools: whisk, bowl, skillet, cheese grater, or spatula - were scattered in odd, hard-to-reach places where one wouldn't think to look for them.

GasDrivenNun · 24/11/2023 17:43

My parents always kept t(eir toaster in a cupboard. Never got why they did. Got a cupboard with lots of toast crumbs.

It's an old joke Scorchio - are you a Catholic Muslim or a Protestant Muslim. The joke is very much on NI's obsession with the old divide, not on you. Ochon didn't mean any offence.

Yes, apologies @Scorchio84 . It is a joke about a jew or a Muslim immigrant in NI saying they are Jewish/Muslim when asked what religion they are. They are then asked are they a Catholic jew/Muslim or a protestant jaw/Muslim.

The traditional question to determine what religion you are is what school did you go to but that's no good for an immigrant.

No offence meant.

Abhannmor · 24/11/2023 16:40

Closet Protestant? If she was a good Catholic it would be a 'press' surely. Protestant also make better cakes and tarts by repute. We'd need to test them.

Yeah, I'm finding it really hard to type cupboard. My fingers want to write press.

I'm willing to judge a Catholic vs protestant bake off.

Michellebops · 24/11/2023 17:09

What an absolutely ridiculous statement to make.

Ffs 🤦🏼‍♀️

It was a joke based on an episode of Derry Girls...

The Catholics haven't a hope.

SquashPenguin · 24/11/2023 18:02

We keep our toaster and kettle in the cupboard, but they only get used once a week if that. The dog goes straight in for the crumbs when I do take it out though 😆

LindorDoubleChoc · 24/11/2023 18:05

Yanbu. I couldn't be doing with it. Our toaster gets used several times a day.

And pp who only uses the kettle once a week - Confused? How does that work?

Oh go no apologies necessary! I'm aware of the jokes so honestly no offence taken... Irish/Anglo/German Athiest here so no skin in the game so to speak but it's still funny & it's still a thing said in jest here in the Republic

70sDuvet · 24/11/2023 18:26

@ColleenDonaghy
Ahhh but it's OK I have this microwave😉😂

And you never say press in the North...unless your in Donegal

To not put the toaster in the cupboard?!

Lol.

We say press! I'm from the South but DH is a nordy. Of the toaster on the counter variety though.

TheKnittedCharacter · 24/11/2023 18:30

I can’t bear anything out on the work surfaces so the toaster goes back into a cupboard after use.

Fizbosshoes · 24/11/2023 18:30

Ours lives in a cupboard, (it is used most days) but I don't think you're being unreasonable for having it on the work surface.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 24/11/2023 18:31

Love that episode of Derry Girls.

We laughed when we went to the Netherlands a couple of years ago, and found toasters to be kept in cupboards there too!

herbyham · 24/11/2023 18:33

I do keep mine in a low cupboard, but that's only because it's one thing I can easily put away amongst a sea of other clutter 😅😂

BlueThursday · 24/11/2023 18:34

Im clearly some secret Protestant as I put mine away and I also say “aich”

my granny would be throwing the holy water over me for this behaviour

Me too - but rarely use it.
