Dave Cameron is back in the cabinet…. desperate throw of the dice or inspired move to limit the inevitable defeat?

What a complete, total and utter shitshow. I don't recognize this country anymore.

MrsHarrisAParis · 13/11/2023 12:34

If you were going to bring back a name from the past (currently unelected since it doesn't seem to matter) which Tory would you make Foreign Sec?
It seems like an esoteric Buzzfeed quiz.
Personally I'd have brought back Rory Stewart. He, at least, has years of experience in the Middle East.

Good god. I didn’t even realise he was still an MP. Desperate times for Sunak.

He isn't! That's another ridiculous part of it. He's being given a lifelong peerage in order to take up the role as he's not even an elected MP.

I know you don't vote for a PM in theory but in practice you do. You can scoff as much as you like but Corbyn was a disaster for the Labour party. Starmer has done a good job in rebuilding the party but there are extremists bubbling under the surface. The Tory extremists are clearly on show.

Let’s be honest here, Corbyn was a gift for the Tories - but he was not bad for Labour. Because the Labour Party has been dead since 1997. Tony Blair led a very successful (domestically at least) centrist or at best centre-left party. While Corbyn was trying to get Labour elected as a Labour Party - and failed.

If you want to know what kind of Party Starmer will lead to power next year, just look at how he’s being received by the right wing establishment newspapers, media etc. They’re treating him with kids gloves. Why? Because they know he’s not going to be presiding over a left wing Labour government. And they know that in 5 years time they can start promoting the Tories again as the Same as Starmer but Better.

So Starmer’s Labour? They don’t care. They like him. Hell some of them may well even get behind him over the Tories this time next year. Because he will enact a bit of left wing feel goodery here and there but he will fundamentally change NOTHING about the way this country runs. And in 5 years time the mess will all be the fault of The Left, despite Starmer being a centrist and not changing the fabric of the economy or sociiety one bit.

Presumably it is an indication that there isn't currently anyone in the Tory party in the Commons or the Lords who is capable or willing to do the job.

Rats, sinking ship...

That's a good point. I think RS could be very good. Maybe he doesn't want the job though?

TBH I'd rather get paid for having a chat with Alistair Campbell once a week than joining the current govt.

Bunnycat101 · 13/11/2023 10:20

I don’t get what’s in it for him though? He seemed to have a nice life with his shepherds hut. Why come back for a year unless he thinks he can win the next election. I bet Sam Cam is furious.

Guaranteed income and prowess for life as an unelected Lord. That's what is in it for him.

I probably would have left Cleverly at Foreign Sec and appointed Theresa May as Home Sec.

It's like taking of your underwear, turning it inside out and putting it back on again.

I'm not British, nor live in the UK so from outside, it looks equally perplexing as it is for all of you.

I really dislike Alistair Campbell but For Sec in the current climate and with no accountability to the Commons feels like such a poisoned chalice, it would be a difficult decision to call.

Flyhigher · 13/11/2023 12:45

He's disgusting and took us into Brexit. And he's not even elected. This govt is a disgrace. Imagine if Labour tried this on.

This country is a tin pot shambles. How can anyone vote Tory. How can anyone think this is ok. .

newnamethanks · 13/11/2023 12:47

At least its knocked Cruella's press coverage down. She must be very disappointed. That's good.

Wheresthebeach · 13/11/2023 12:51

I guess Rory Stuart wouldn't touch this lot with a barge pole.

Astonishing. Desperate.

PeaceBreaksOut · 13/11/2023 12:58

Rory Stewart's reasonably keen on Rishi as a person I think. They're in very different places on some policy areas though.

Hippobot · 13/11/2023 12:59

Stroopwaffels · 13/11/2023 10:46

I think it's an inspired move by Rishi. What with Ukraine and the Middle East, he needed someone with experience and who is a known face to international leaders. Think what you like of his politics, but he has that credibility on an international stage.

đŸ˜‚the man has zero credibility on an international stage. A cursory glance at some international newspapers during his premiership would tell you that. He turned the UK into a laughing stock in the eyes of the world. Look at the instability he caused in Europe with Brexit and the damage he caused in Libya. His track record is appalling, from the bedroom tax to tax evasion. Perhaps he'll encourage Rishi to revive The Big Society đŸ™„-- was such a suscceful slogan last time whilst the gulf between rich and poor grew astronomically.

MrsHarrisAParis · 13/11/2023 13:01

I don't like that he's unelected and I don't like the lack of accountability but I have a sneaking admiration for the tacit admission that the current shower of Tories are so bloody awful that they have to go back to the vaults to find someone.
Although I am concerned and slightly uneasy about what it means is going to happen next from an UK/Middle East diplomacy pov.

SerendipityJane · 13/11/2023 13:02

Therese Coffey gone ?

So this is the dream team that Rish! is setting up as the Tories election machine. Res ipsa loquitur as Boris might say.

SerendipityJane · 13/11/2023 13:10

Israeli ambassador has just X'd (formerly twitter) pointing out the 1962 and 1994 pork laws

I kind of wonder whether May would've accepted. She seems to be quite enjoying herself on the backbenches.

Well David Cameron wasn't an MP, he was at least a Tory Party Member.

Rory Stewart is no longer a member of the Tory Party so I think bringing him back might have been a step too far.

I think the next couple of episodes of The Rest Is Politics will be very interesting! Rory's most recent book was politely scathing about Call Me Dave...

So the architect of the shit show of austerity and Brexit is back, we truly are in a banana republic now

Look, look look at this shiny new appointment!!!!

Don't look over there at that nasty former cabinet Minister...

lovescats3 · 13/11/2023 13:16
