Dave Cameron is back in the cabinet…. desperate throw of the dice or inspired move to limit the inevitable defeat?

What’s “identity politics” @BloodyHellKen?

Identity politics is when groups of people having a particular racial, religious, ethnic, social, or cultural identity promote their own specific interests or concerns without regard to the interests or concerns of any larger political group - the left broke itself down into smaller subsets (who often disagreed) rather than all standing together.

IMO this seemed to result in a race to the bottom of who was most oppressed.

I don't know why the left are vulnerable to this phenomenon.

Liamgallaghersparka · 13/11/2023 12:04

Hopeless bunch of twats. It's like watching a barn fire.

WestwardHo1 · 13/11/2023 12:05

He called a referendum on something as important as remaining in the EU, failed to communicate with the enormous numbers of people who didn't understand how much this was part of their lives, arrogantly dismissed their concerns, refused to campaign properly on the issue, instigated "Austerity", completely shafted the Libdems who - like it or not - were needed as a moderating influence in the increasing and catastrophic polarisation of UK politics....I mean what's not to love about "Dave"?

Sunak's pathetic last throw of the dice. There is nothing "inspired" about it.

Well you're in luck in Islington North. The Labour candidate won't be Jeremy Corbyn this time will it? I don't even know if he plans to stand to be honest.

I know you don't vote for a PM in theory but in practice you do. You can scoff as much as you like but Corbyn was a disaster for the Labour party. Starmer has done a good job in rebuilding the party but there are extremists bubbling under the surface. The Tory extremists are clearly on show.

DdraigGoch · 13/11/2023 12:08

Araminta1003 · 13/11/2023 11:23

Next, Starmer will bring Blair back?!

He did appoint Miliband

MereDintofPandiculation · 13/11/2023 12:08

Brexit should never have been put to a referendum. Certainly not without a supermajority to ensure a stable outcome. Yes, this. They said it didn't need a supermajority because it was advisory not binding, then they treated it as binding.

Westfacing · 13/11/2023 12:08

It's Win Win for Cameron.

Swan around the world at our expense, pop up on TV here and there, and then no matter what happens at the GE he'll be sitting comfortably for the rest of his life with a seat in the Lords.

FormerlyPathologicallyHappy · 13/11/2023 12:12

It's no worse than Lord Mandleson and his "minister without portfolio" job with tony blair. He got sacked several times as well.

Their all in the same plague pit, there's no clean hands its politics.

Totally agree

I must say I am delighted that one of the results of taking back control from unelected bureucrats in Brussels is that one of the highest offices of state in the UK is being occupied by someone who isn't elected.

At least the next election General Election will be won by a party who are committed to abolishing HoLs.

Yeah it is, Mandelson never fucked anything up as badly as Cameron did the referendum. This looks much more desperate and the optics are worse for the PM. And I say that as someone who thinks Mandelson was actually a pretty awful individual.

anotherside · 13/11/2023 12:18

When Labour go too far to the left they don’t get elected. When the Tories go too far to the right they still get elected and then spend the next 10-15 years sinking the country.

IslandsInTheSunshine · 13/11/2023 12:21

@BIossomtoes Except he didn't! You can carp on if you like but the fact is it was Blair who did.

I agree the Tories have been hopeless, but I can't understand why anyone believes the other parties would have done any better, especially under Corbyn because in opposition the other parties have been pretty hopeless too.

Brexit was a huge mistake and should never have been put to a vote. Far too complex an economic issue.

The one positive is that Johnson must be absolutely seething.

At least he hasn't been brought back.

Who was a sitting MP wasn't he?

(he was wasn't he? Politics has been such a pantomime for so long, I can't even remember )

They are not looking to abolish it they are looking to reform the House of Lords

they claim they want to abolish it but it’s not really it’s a change

that I am willing to bet on won’t happen

anotherside · 13/11/2023 12:25

Next year the country has a choice to choose between the Tories or a Small c Conservative party, which under Starmer who will enact 80-90% of the same same policies and when he fails to turn it around that will be more proof the Left doesn’t work and so back to another 10+ years of the Real Deal.
Britain has been stitched up good and proper.

MrsHarrisAParis · 13/11/2023 12:25

So is DC falling on his sword to take the blame for the UK's approach to diplomatic relations with Israel and Palestine, etc? Whilst at the same time, allowing Rishi to show that the party needs to shift away from the boorish, corrupt populism of Boris.
(yy Cameron's crew were also corrupt and yy he led to the Brexit shitshow - but all of that seems positively halcyon compared to Boris and Truss) It won't be enough to win the next election for the Tories but it may just reposition them enough to stop them sliding further into the moral abyss and to give them a decade to make themselves viable.

User135644 · 13/11/2023 12:25

Stroopwaffels · 13/11/2023 10:46

I think it's an inspired move by Rishi. What with Ukraine and the Middle East, he needed someone with experience and who is a known face to international leaders. Think what you like of his politics, but he has that credibility on an international stage.

Didn't Obama refer to Dave as a lightweight?

Nobody is saying Blair didn't do it though. They're saying that he did so with the enthusiastic backing of the Tories, much more so than his own party in fact, and that this means they don't benefit from their support of the whole shitshow being discussed. That said, if you want to ensure we're talking about Tory support for the Iraq invasion, that's up to you.

@verdantverdure unlikely, he's currently sitting as an independent, having had the labour whip removed. He's not in the parliamentary labour party.
No idea if he plans to stand as an independent, but labour have said they won't have him as their candidate.

"Didn't Obama refer to Dave as a lightweight?"

What did he actually mean by that? I don't understand why you think its relevant.
