Dave Cameron is back in the cabinet…. desperate throw of the dice or inspired move to limit the inevitable defeat?

Gordon Brown was keen on getting a way for the Commons to summon a Lord who held government office so they could be answerable. IIRC, it was because it would make it easier to appoint from a wider (and quite probably more experienced) group.

I'm guessing nowt has come of this

You can’t enjoy facism if you start letting the throngs think they have any input in governing.

MaggieFS · 13/11/2023 10:24

What a fucking mess. It looks dire or desperate for Sunak. Cameron is unanswerable to the commons. He's the twat that caved to the Tory right and gave us Brexit.

FFS.

piscofrisco · 13/11/2023 10:27

I'm confused as I didn't think he was an MP anymore and on top of that I didn't think you could be in cabinet if you weren't an MP? Obvs Im wrong on at least one of those counts!

DaisyDaisyDaisyDaisyDaisyDaisy · 13/11/2023 10:27

The man who gave us Brexit. I absolutely despise him for that and I always will.

He's being made a life peer so will sit in the House of Lords.

It is allowed, I think thatcher did it as well with someone in her cabinet. But in my (inexpert) opinion, it should be allowed. He won't be answerable in the House of Commons

Fucked a pig’s head and responsible for Brexit. Sheer desperation from Rishi.

Well. Yes. Both are true. I can never forgive him for walking away after Brexit when he promised he wouldn’t. He should have stayed and helped us manage the mess he’d put us in. But…

At least he has some empathy for his fellow human beings. With all his faults, and I’d never choose him or vote Tory, when I look back, if we have to have a Tory government (and don’t get me started on the masses of turkeys in this country that vote for Christmas) then I’d rather him than some of the other heartless, cold blooded psychopaths.

But agreed that this is likely a ploy to try and claw back some more centrist right wing voters.

piscofrisco · 13/11/2023 10:29

Oh I've just read the full thread. He isn't an MP bit he is a Lord. Presumably given a lordship after casually allowing the process that ended in Brexit and us all being fucked. Excellent. Just the democratic system we can be proud of.

IDoNotMoisturise · 13/11/2023 10:29

He is Foreign Sec

fiftiesmum · 13/11/2023 10:30

Meanwhile Suellen gets a huge payoff all her sins forgotten and forgiven
Cameron smooches in having started it off by letting us all be lied to by BJ about Brexit.
Cleverly isn't.
Can I be defence secretary - I know nothing about organising war and the armed forces or perhaps arts and culture.

It's even worse than that - he's not currently a Lord so his peerage will be rushed through in order for him to take the job. It's unbelievable. And optics wise looks so shit for Sunak that not one MP in his entire party is up to the job so he's having to use a hugely rare loophole to get someone else in. God this party is a joke,

Lords can be appointed, and it happens from time to time.

Gordon Brown was quite keen on it - he tried to find a way for the Commons to be able to call a peer who held government office so s/he could be answerable. The idea was that it would widen the range (and improve level of experience) of the candidate pool, which he thought was a very good thing.

Doesn't seem to have come to anything, so it's back to the old idiosyncratic rules and someone will have to answer for the SoS in the Commons, and I guess that'll have to be the PM.

Would this move have been needed at all if there were experienced and capable MPs available to choose from?

MrsMariaReynolds · 13/11/2023 10:33

You couldn't make this up. đŸ˜‚ This only goes to show how hopeless and desperate the Tories are.

HRTQueen · 13/11/2023 10:34

This is about Tory in party wars

Its preferable than playing to the right and populist side of the party

WandaWonder · 13/11/2023 10:34

Lord Cameron

Findapath · 13/11/2023 10:36

Desperate but not the worst move if RS is trying to appeal to the more moderate tories. Might help with that but I hope it doesn’t. Shows the paucity of talent amongst current MPs.

Sirzy · 13/11/2023 10:37

It shouldn’t be allowed irrespective of who he is as he isn’t a sitting MP. It just makes more of a farce of the whole system

JL690 · 13/11/2023 10:40

Desperation. Bringing back damaged goods and giving them a premium rating đŸ˜©I didn't trust him as PM, nothing has changed my opinion of him.

Lwrenagain · 13/11/2023 10:40

I'm politically homeless these days as everything just manages to disgust me, but bringing back the man who allegedly sexually assaulted the head of a slaughtered animal being almost a welcome highlight for the country just shows we really need things to improve slightly. Just a smidge at least.
What do posters say here, "raise the bar?"

I have a story about some politicians, take with an absolute pinch of salt because I can't verify it and I'm a stranger on the internet, I could say any old shite, but anyway, this happened to an old pal of mine.
Many moons ago my friends gastro pub was massively destroyed to the damage of 4k (this was over 20 years ago also by!) by some very well known politicians and a young girl (16) who worked there after school was groped. Next day a cheque was delivered my an older man with enough cash to refurbish the pub and handsomely compensate the staff (not enough to compensate sexually assaulting a child imo) and keep the pub ticking over during its being closed to to the repairs needing.
I have no reason to doubt my sources so I believe that it happened. As I say though, I couldn't verify it at all and I wouldn't say any names because I don't think that's fair.

ButDaddyILoveHim · 13/11/2023 10:42

Utterly desperate and pathetic move from Sunak. Might as well just be honest and admit that they have absolutely no one of any calibre or gravitas in the current Tory party anymore. The architect of austerity and the Man Who Brought You Brexit, fast-tracked to a peerage to plug the cabinet holes. You couldn't make this shit up.

General election NOW. Get these appalling, careless fuckers out.

andmeandmeandme · 13/11/2023 10:44

I'm on the left and hold Cameron pretty much fully responsible for Brexit, and I can't believe I'm saying this, but I'm actually glad he's back simply because he might bring some moderation.

If this was the Buller on the rampage, yes, that’s absolutely par for the course, or was during my student days.

AntonFeckoff · 13/11/2023 10:44

Oh good. ‘For people who want to get on in life’ Cameron. Hmm

LlynTegid · 13/11/2023 10:46

@andmeandmeandme it is a difference between treading in three dog turds than one or two, though an improvement of sorts.

Stroopwaffels · 13/11/2023 10:46

I think it's an inspired move by Rishi. What with Ukraine and the Middle East, he needed someone with experience and who is a known face to international leaders. Think what you like of his politics, but he has that credibility on an international stage.
