Collective Punishment - No water, no food, no medicines

Lieblingsessen · 09/10/2023 19:19

I do not condone whatsoever what the Hamas attacks on civilians in Israel or their ideology

But surely, Israel laying siege to Gaza, preventing innocent civilians from accessing water, food, medicines, electricity for hospital equipment, is not justifiable. To collectively punish civilians who have no control over what Hamas or their government does. This is medieval.

Where is the outcry on the mainstream media about this? Surely it is not being anti-semitic to call out Israel, that retaliation is not unexpected, but collective punishment is horrendous.

I completely agree. Sadly I think the Gaza Strip and the majority of inhabitants are going to get annihilated in the next few days.

Mumsanetta · 09/10/2023 19:23

I agree, imagine the outcry if the US or UK did this.

User98866 · 09/10/2023 19:24

I agree. Completely horrified by the actions of hamas but I don’t understand why they can’t at least try to evacuate women and children. It’s no use telling people to leave, they are blockaded in! I know it’s war but this isn’t a normal war. There will be such a deep humanitarian crisis, with children suffering more than anyone. I can’t even begin to imagine the horrors.

Sundaefraise · 09/10/2023 19:28

Yes, I think medieval is the word. It makes me very uneasy that the UK might condone this. The scenes coming out of Israel are appalling, but this will lead to an avoidable humanitarian crisis.

LizzieSiddal · 09/10/2023 19:30

Isreal should retaliate and bomb the hell out of Hamas, but to starve the general population is horrific and surely a war crime.

TheCupboardUnderTheStairsAtTheMojoDojoCasaHouse · 09/10/2023 19:33

Honestly everyone is acting appallingly in the conflict, and has been for decades.

Laying seige to Gaza and then bombing them is, however, only going to inspire even more people to fight against the Israelis.

IMustDoMoreExercise · 09/10/2023 19:38

The leader of the SNP has said that his mother is trapped there I think.

That’s the problem. They can’t bomb them because it’s so densely populated and they will use civilians and hostages as human shields. So many innocent lives lost.

Gaza is densely populated and has been blockaded by sea and land for years, relying on humanitarian aid for the most part. To now cut off water, food and medicine supplies, whilst being heavily bombed for the sins of their government. I agree that this will only lead to hopelessness, when a child, parent , relative or other innocent civilian dies and when that happens, will just lead to more and more horrendous acts of violence. Another never ending cycle between Israel and the Palestinians. I despair.

Honestly, you can’t blame Israel for retaliating like this. When you read of the heartbreaking executions Hamas have carried out on Israeli families, they have to protect their people, which calls for harsh measures. There was a lot of sympathy for the Palestinians prior to this, and Israel had to toe the line. But now Hamas have played right into their hands, because the sympathy has now gone on the back of their savagery, and Israel have the green light to do what they have to do.

Truthisbetterthanlies · 09/10/2023 19:50

Gazans can and frequently do get visas to leave through the Egyptian border. 450,000 visas issued in just 3 months this year. So hardly a seige. And if the Egyptians aren't prepared to just open the border fully and let all the Gazans out, you might want to take that up with the Egyptians, not the Israelis?

You can hardly blame the Israelis for saying enough is enough and refusing to let Palestinians into Israel after the massacres of the last weekend.

As for the refusing to supply Gaza with food, water, etc, why the hell should Israelis do any such thing? They are at war with Gaza. Since when are countries required to supply their enemies with basic necessities of life?? We didn't feed the Nazis in WWII either.

It's not as though Hamas had any difficulties smuggling in thousands of rockets, guns etc, so clearly the borders are pretty porous.

If Hamas chose to spend their billons on aid money stocking up on eg weapons to massacre Jewish teens enjoying music festivals rather than essentials to feed and provide for their own population, that's rather on them, isn't it?? Maybe they made bad choices??

sprigatito · 09/10/2023 19:51

Israel finally has the excuse it was waiting for. They are going to wipe the Palestinian people off the face of the earth, and the western media will be cheering them on.

Yes, for the Israeli government tto purposely state to the world that they are cutting off access to water and food to Gaza surely must be a war crime. I also thought collective punishment was as well. So what is the UK and US governments' response? Silence. Why?

Would it be something to do with all the arms they buy from them ?

HermioneWeasley · 09/10/2023 19:58

Palestinians have been cheering on Hamas and handing out sweets to celebrate. Perhaps not all of them, but it’s not Hamas acting against the will of the people.

gaza has a border with Egypt. They can provide humanitarian aid. Except they don’t want to open that border because it’s a fucking nightmare.

as a PP has said, if they can smuggle in weapons, they can get food and medicine in for their people. Except they won’t, because they want to blame the Israelis.

topnoddy · 09/10/2023 20:01

If you say Israel is wrong in doing this are you anti semetic ?

cellarst · 09/10/2023 20:02

Hamas have badly misjudged this invasion. The parading of naked women being spat on is sharpening the mind as to just how dangerous their culture is. There was a lot of support for the Palestinians before this. Isreal is about to be unleashed by the west.

Blackbyrd · 09/10/2023 20:04

No point starting this thread OP when you just want to shout into an echo chamber. As PP have clarified, there is more than one border. The UK has rightly or wrongly attempted many times to influence Middle Eastern politics, and achieved little except criticism. Direct your concerns towards the true instigators of this attack, Iran

Yes, it’s wrong, but not unexpected when many hundreds of innocent civilians have been raped, murdered and kidnapped by the people of Gaza.

We’ve all seen the Gazans dancing in the streets, celebrating the dead children of Israel, so I do understand a temporary blockade while the terrorist attacks are stopped.

Well you can say the same about the Israeli people voting in their extreme right wing government which is stealing Palestinian land every day against international law.

If so, do they deserve to be raped and their babies beheaded because they voted them in?

The initial attack was brutal, as is this response

It’s desperate all round

Are you suggesting that the PIL of Humza Yousaf (he's not just the leader of the SNP, but the First Minister of Scotland; do you just call Sunak the Tory leader?) are affiliated with Hamas and responsible for the attacks?

Agreed. https://www.amnesty.org/en/location/middle-east-and-north-africa/israel-and-occupied-palestinian-territories/report-israel-and-occupied-palestinian-territories/

I was listening to the radio earlier. A pro Palestinian person said 10,000 Palestinians have been killed by Israel since 2000. Idk if this figure is accurate. But I do not understand how we turn a blind eye when it is Israel killing Palestinians but outraged the other way around. Both are equally abhorrent and Israel is the strongest country by far.
