Collective Punishment - No water, no food, no medicines

1000 replies

Lieblingsessen · 09/10/2023 19:19

I do not condone whatsoever what the Hamas attacks on civilians in Israel or their ideology

But surely, Israel laying siege to Gaza, preventing innocent civilians from accessing water, food, medicines, electricity for hospital equipment, is not justifiable. To collectively punish civilians who have no control over what Hamas or their government does. This is medieval.

Where is the outcry on the mainstream media about this? Surely it is not being anti-semitic to call out Israel, that retaliation is not unexpected, but collective punishment is horrendous.

Gaza does have the capability to desalinate enough water for it's population if the infrastructure survives the Israeli forces.

Gaza also does share a border with Egypt, and so isn't under siege in the traditional sense. Israel is basically saying they will offer no assistance, which despite relations, (prior to this weekend), they do quite a bit of.

This is exactly what Iran wants and the people of Gaza and Israel are just cannon fodder. There is obviously a greater agenda as even the most uninformed person can see killing even a few thousand Israelis is not the main goal.

It seems the plan is to antagonise Israel into a reaction that Iran or other Arab countries then respond to creating complete chaos. Unlikely to see much from other Arab countries as most do no support Iran in their ideology - but hands could be forced in response to Israeli retaliation.

Such a sad situation with no real resolution.

cakeorwine · 09/10/2023 20:40

I thought the Rafah crossing between Gaza and Egypt can only be used for people, not goods. So how are the people in Gaza supposed to get any supplies in?

Hamas need to be wiped from the face of the earth. They are animals, but they will hopefully be exterminated once and for all now. This is just the beginning of Israel's fight back.

With 300,000 reservists already preparing for action to add to the already massive permanent Israeli defence forces, along with many thousands of former Israeli soldiers from around the world now making their way back on special flights laid on to get them there asap, it is going to be decisive.

LaurieFairyCake · 09/10/2023 20:46

Israel is wrong for doing this

I am not anti semitic

Gazans can and frequently do get visas to leave through the Egyptian border. 450,000 visas issued in just 3 months this year. So hardly a seige. And if the Egyptians aren't prepared to just open the border fully and let all the Gazans out, you might want to take that up with the Egyptians, not the Israelis?

You can hardly blame the Israelis for saying enough is enough and refusing to let Palestinians into Israel after the massacres of the last weekend.

As for the refusing to supply Gaza with food, water, etc, why the hell should Israelis do any such thing? They are at war with Gaza. Since when are countries required to supply their enemies with basic necessities of life?? We didn't feed the Nazis in WWII either.

It's not as though Hamas had any difficulties smuggling in thousands of rockets, guns etc, so clearly the borders are pretty porous.

If Hamas chose to spend their billons on aid money stocking up on eg weapons to massacre Jewish teens enjoying music festivals rather than essentials to feed and provide for their own population, that's rather on them, isn't it?? Maybe they made bad choices??

Israel themselves have said this is a complete siege.

Pleidiolwyfimgwlad73 · 09/10/2023 20:52

Collective punishment is a war crime under international law. It’s fucking grim.

Sippingmytea · 09/10/2023 20:53

It’s absolutely horrific and is a war crime. It’s awful to see how many people are actively cheering for genocide. They’re already bombing hospitals and refugee camps.

Blueblell · 09/10/2023 20:55

There will be no winners here. Hamas knows that the Israeli have control of all their utilities and I am sure they will have expected this response.

Sippingmytea · 09/10/2023 20:57

The language being used (including here) is absolutely vile. Posters saying that human beings should be exterminated, wiped off the face of the earth, animals ….

Mumsnet needs to stop this sort of language. This is awful.

Ah. Is it all a Big Jewish Conspiracy then??

How predictable to see the antisemitic tropes pop up.

Not surprising, but predictable. They always do.

Would it be something to do with all the arms they buy from them ?

. . . . plus the diamonds, nuclear reactors and pharmaceuticals the west get from Israel?

Agree and pretty sure it's a troll post. Done to get a reaction. Agree it should be deleted.

It seems you and a few others are going off track. My question was, surely collective punishment cannot ever be justified. As others have said, it is a war crime.

To deprive civilians (most of whom are children) of water, food and medicines based on the sins of their government (who last had elections 17 years ago) is medieval treatment.

Those who say they can get those supplies from Egypt instead, so in the middle of a massive bombardment, some civil engineers should just be able to create many new supply routes, just like that? Nevermind that in the meantime, thousands upon thousands of people are going to have lingering deaths dying of thirst and hunger and lack of of medicines. Really?

Are you having a laugh?

Israel towed the line? If they'd towed the line this wouldn't be happening.

ketchup07070 · 09/10/2023 21:04

I wonder if humanitarian organisations are still in Gaza. Maybe they can somehow negotiate some essential supplies?

Hamas are terrorists. Of course they need to be destroyed!

What needs to stop is the posting of conspiracy theories stating the Israeli powers allowed the murders, rapes and kidnappings of their own citizens.

I am honestly not surprised at the antisemitism on MN, though, we have seen it all before many times.

PictureFrameWindow · 09/10/2023 21:06

Almost 1 million children live in Gaza, nearly half the population.

The Hamas attacks on Israel were horrifying, inexcusable, totally unjustifiable.

But starving kids, is that really the answer here?

What the heck does that mean? Utterly vile comment betrays a nasty mind set. Pray, tell. What exactly do you think the parents in law were doing in Gaza where their family live?

User135644 · 09/10/2023 21:09

What were Hamas thinking? Beyond the horror and psychopathy of it, Israel are armed to the teeth and they've got the west and the western media behind them. they're going to retaliate like fuck and the west will have their backs. They'd have known that before going in.

Pleidiolwyfimgwlad73 · 09/10/2023 21:09

“Hamas are terrorists. Of course they need to be destroyed”

But the 2 million people crammed in to Gaza, one million of whom are kids AREN’T terrorists.

Not sure why it’s so hard for people to understand that. The people of Ireland l werent all the IRA either.

Antisemitic Trope Bingo - they're all doing it for the money from the rich Jews!

As it's not as though normal people could possibly oppose terrorists who rape and massacre hundreds of teens at a music festival, go door to door murdering whole families (including a grandmother in her 80s, videoing her murder and posting it to her Facebook page so her granddaughter could find it), set fire to houses with families still in them, take babies, children and the elderly as hostages, behead prisoners of war, threaten to murder the hostages one by one on live video and audio feeds if they don't get their way, and spit on the mutilated, raped corpse of a tourist. Unless they were paid to do so!!

Incredible.

Ruby - you may find it hard to believe, but there are still civilised people left who can see no difference between Hamas and ISIS in terms of behaviour.

And who will make decisions based on that. Because they still have a moral conscience. Unlike some on this thread.

Purplebunnie · 09/10/2023 21:11

Blackbyrd · 09/10/2023 20:04

No point starting this thread OP when you just want to shout into an echo chamber. As PP have clarified, there is more than one border. The UK has rightly or wrongly attempted many times to influence Middle Eastern politics, and achieved little except criticism. Direct your concerns towards the true instigators of this attack, Iran

I strongly suspect that Putin has enabled this attack through Iran

ChesterDrawz · 09/10/2023 21:11

@Pleidiolwyfimgwlad73

Of course the poor children and civilians should not be harmed.

My posts both clearly stated "Hamas" not "Palestinians".
