Collective Punishment - No water, no food, no medicines

1000 replies

Lieblingsessen · 09/10/2023 19:19

I do not condone whatsoever what the Hamas attacks on civilians in Israel or their ideology

But surely, Israel laying siege to Gaza, preventing innocent civilians from accessing water, food, medicines, electricity for hospital equipment, is not justifiable. To collectively punish civilians who have no control over what Hamas or their government does. This is medieval.

Where is the outcry on the mainstream media about this? Surely it is not being anti-semitic to call out Israel, that retaliation is not unexpected, but collective punishment is horrendous.

@Dymaxion i guess we’ll find out what Egypt want to do. It’s been problematic in the past. But there has to be a humanitarian corridor.

Could you explain more about the Egyptians reluctance to open the border? I do know a bit about the current situation in Lebanon - I have friends there- and I know the issue of Palestinian refugees is ... contentious.

Haffiana · 09/10/2023 21:50

It says a bomb hit the gate. It literally says in that article that it will be open again and operating as normal by tomorrow.

GuinnessBird · 09/10/2023 21:50

The ground forces are moving in, I expect Gaza is going to get razed.

I feel desperately sorry for the children but I'm not sure what Hamas expected.

ketchup07070 · 09/10/2023 21:50

@GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing Israel won't allow it and have bombed the border crossing. Thanks to @BBno4 for giving that info. I was asking myself the same question.

No. Read the actual article.

EsmaCannonball · 09/10/2023 21:51

As Hamas was the aggressor in this instance, it is within their power to prevent a siege. They could return all the hostages and surrender themselves to protect the civilian population. But that's not their endgame. Civilians dying is part of their plan.

Almahart · 09/10/2023 21:51

The attacks by Hamas are absolutely indefensible.

At the same time, the Palestinian population of Gaza is not actually Hamas. They are two separate things. Hamas is not universally supported, for example they have completely wrecked what was left of the education system there. I cannot imagine how terrifying it must be an ordinary person living in Gaza at the moment.

A complete blockade of Gaza is a war crime. It's absolutely horrendous.

Haffiana · 09/10/2023 21:51

I have seen horrible videos of children that have been set on fire by Israelis, babies shot point blank in the head. What kind of evil is this? And why isn't it being reported on the news.

because it didn’t happen

and Jews didn’t just ‘die in the ghettos’ during the war, they were murdered. Systematically and purposefully annihilated.

ketchup07070 · 09/10/2023 21:44

I'm not sure if Egypt may open a humanitarian corridor. I don't think Israel will allow them to, because it will spoil the effect of their siege. Maybe Egypt will take a chance and do it, but probably have the US breathing down their neck as well if they do. Then, if Gazans leave they will probably never be allowed back if Israel goes in and takes over completely. That seems like what they might want to do.

I don't think Egypt will, for the reasons you state: pressure from Israel and the US. But also, I think Egypt is worried about Hamas militants and also having to deal with a massive refugee crisis.

Currently Israel is bombing Rafah. https://www.pbs.org/newshour/world/israeli-defense-minister-orders-complete-siege-on-gaza-after-hamas-surprise-attack

There is ZERO anti semitism on this thread. Quite the opposite in face. Stop trying to shut down conversation with that strawman argument.

It is very similar to what the trans activists do when people are trying to discuss the facts around sex and gender.

On here the Palestians have been called animals and they have been blamed for their own suffering and punishment, call that out!

Where have the Palestinians been called animals? I've read the entire thread and don't see that. Have you read it all?

And yes, there are many examples of antisemitism. Do you perhaps not understand what antisemitism is?

hamas are terrorists not freedom fighters. They want this to happen.

Innocent people shouldn't be seen as collateral damaged, and they shouldn't be seen as expected to die. There's an attitude on here of oh well, what do you expect.

I expect better how can they say they are different to Hamas when they are committing the same and even worse acts.

If they are going in on foot and openly killing women and children then would you say they are any different?

RubyGemStone · 09/10/2023 21:54

The crossing at Rafah was reopened already today, it wasn't the target and is currently back in use. This has been widely reported this evening.

NotTerfNorCis · 09/10/2023 21:42

you think it is responsible for feeding and medicating the entire population of a place it is at war with

The Gaza Strip is a giant prison camp guarded by Israel. From Wikipedia: 'Gaza has been under a full Israeli-led land, sea and air blockade. This prevents people and goods from freely entering or leaving the territory, leading to the territory being often called an "open-air prison".' https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gaza_Strip

I sponsor a child in the Gaza Strip with Action Aid. This is Action Aid's page: https://www.actionaid.org.uk/about-us/where-we-work/occupied-palestinian-territory

Since 2007, Gaza has been living under a blockade, meaning people and goods are prevented from freely entering and leaving Gaza by land, sea, or air. This severely limits basic necessities like food, medicine, and building materials from getting into Gaza.

The blockade makes life near impossible for the 1.8 million people who live there – 1.2 million of whom are refugees. Most people have little or no access to essential resources such as electricity, water, and sewage removal.

Half the population of Gaza is children. Many have experienced conflict for a large part of their life and are battling with severe trauma and emotional distress. And their education has been affected too: over 250 schools were damaged or destroyed in 2014 alone.

The blockade, repeated conflict, and increasing poverty has had a devastating impact on Gaza’s economy. Three out of seven people are unemployed, giving Gaza the highest unemployment rate in the world.

This is the society that Israel is now going to cut off entirely from the outside world. Netanyahu says: 'We will exact a price that will be remembered by them and Israel’s other enemies for decades to come.'

On Monday Israel declared a "complete siege" on the territory - saying electricity, food, fuel and water would be cut off.
According to residents, aid has not reached the enclave since Saturday.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-67051292

So tell me how the Palestinians could manage to smuggle in thousands of rockets, but they can't manage any medicine or food?

Why not?

And why can't they spend their billions in aid on desalination technology so they have enough water? (which is the kind of thing it's intended for, not for buying guns and rockets?) Why on earth are still relying on Israel for water nearly 20 years after Israel left Gaza?

Stop infantilising the Palestinians, stop demonising the Jews.

bellac11 · 09/10/2023 21:54

Hamas is not the Palestinian people

But the Palestinian people are under seige and occupied and have been for decades.

So in any unstable and vulnerable state, the fuel for terrorism is created.

Its horrific on both sides.

Its almost impossible to discuss without being labelled anti semitic though. If the Israeli government was any other they would be condemned for their treatment over the years of the Palestinians but instead they are supported.

My understanding is that the average Israeli does not condone the treatment of their Palestinian neighbours

Boundoverbyacat · 09/10/2023 21:55

oh I missed this! I didn’t see the Israelis parading young girls that had been raped to death, bleeding from their vaginas whilst draped across the soldiers in the backs of trucks

Gaza has a border with Egypt. You should be asking why they are not choosing to let refugees into Egypt. Or food and medicine across to Gaza

Antisemitic Trope Bingo - they're all doing it for the money from the rich Jews!

As it's not as though normal people could possibly oppose terrorists who rape and massacre hundreds of teens at a music festival, go door to door murdering whole families (including a grandmother in her 80s, videoing her murder and posting it to her Facebook page so her granddaughter could find it), set fire to houses with families still in them, take babies, children and the elderly as hostages, behead prisoners of war, threaten to murder the hostages one by one on live video and audio feeds if they don't get their way, and spit on the mutilated, raped corpse of a tourist. Unless they were paid to do so!!

Incredible.

Ruby - you may find it hard to believe, but there are still civilised people left who can see no difference between Hamas and ISIS in terms of behaviour.

And who will make decisions based on that. Because they still have a moral conscience. Unlike some on this thread.

You are completely wrong about why I said that.

Someone asked why the west stay silent. Everyone knows the world's allies are based on trade above anything else.
Perhaps google Israel's biggest exports. Or any country for that matter. You'll find that everyone allies with whoever they have the biggest trade deals with. It's not rocket science. The world turns with money and resources. Nothing else.

Myomment was absolutely nothing to do with religion.
It is sick to call people antisemetic. It's people like you who drive conflict.

TheHouseonHauntedHill · 09/10/2023 21:55

I agree.

Hammas oppress Palestinians, there is no way to win and women are already completely oppressed inside Palestine.

Women and children will just suffer even more.
It makes me sick but I'm sick of of cultures where women have zilch rights anyway.

Wonder why anti-Israel lies were posted on this thread claiming the crossing was permanently shut?

Strange how many antisemites afoot on this thread.
