Enjoyed watching the documentary, he was different than I expected him to be, not sure how really, but I have more respect for Victoria now as I think their lives have been about what he wanted/needed mainly
There are rumours of lots of affairs, is this true though as I find that hard to believe, he seemed so obsessed with her

It’s fine, but it’s a hagiography.

I like Beckham as a sportsman. He was never the most naturally talented footballer, but made up for any deficiencies by pure hard work and making the most of everything he had.

EmmaPaella · 06/10/2023 18:49

Two teachers at my school were “definitely” having an affair - until it turned out one of them was gay. How does anyone, even a parent at the same school, actually know this stuff for sure. I really can’t imagine that teacher came out and confiding in the kids’ parents about it.

“He was never the most naturally talented footballer”

He was one of them though, wasn’t he - to be captain of the England squad…

People knew at the school. It was not speculation. There were certain repercussions - it was dealt with - and people warned not to go to the press.

TinaTeaspoons · 06/10/2023 19:02

Finding the netflix documentary really interesting. Victoria in particular is a lot more likeable than I previously would have thought.

It's highly contrived and curated.

It's certainly not a "documentary".

This

Brand Beckham thrives on having viewers/followed be in awe of these odiously wealthy people who seem to be glossing over the Rebecca Loos thing because it doesn’t uphold Brand Beckham values

What Victoria Beckham did for the spice girls was set up fair contracts and made sure they secured and were paid their fair share for endorsements and sponsorships. She was also the one who came up with the personas which was incredibly good branding.

Sporty, Posh, Baby, Ginger and Scary. This then applied much more easily to products. Extremely smart. Then, while they didn’t have an official contract with their original management team, with her fathers help, she figured out how to create a bidding war and the group signed with Virgin. Victoria Beckham was instrumental in this key stage. Without her the spice girls would never have been as successful as they were.

Victoria Beckham didn’t make up the names. A magazine did

Of course, particularly in deadball situations. However, he’s not one of the true elite, by which I’d class Messi, Ronaldo, Pele, Maradona, Zidane, etc. That said, very few are in that elite group and he squeezed every bit of potential he had, played for some of the biggest clubs in the world, and his work ethic was truly something else.

Folks, to film the "documentary" takes:

A camera team of 2
A sound technician
A lighting technician
A Netflix producer
The Beckham PR machine
Hair and makeup

This is about as "documentary" as the Kardashian's

OhYetAnotherBrickInTheWall · 06/10/2023 19:37

It’s a brilliantly produced series. Brilliant. I really like them (as I’m supposed to post viewing!)

Beautifully shot, great other contributors (who are pretty honest even if they are co-execs), warm, funny, natural. The shots of other players watching televised play are amazing. Those shots are <chefs kiss>

They are VERY good at what they do and who they listen do. That is a massive skill and I admire them for it.

I’ve always have admired their gumption, think she weathered the infidelity years that are pretty much a given with a man who’s been told he’s a God from the age of 12, and - what the fuck do I know - but it seems they’ve reached a point where they want to grow old together.

Victoria wearing flat Brogues will have been discussed for weeks.

Pumpkinoutfitsgalore · 06/10/2023 19:55

I’m still shocked he supposedly had all these affairs-I mean, with a teacher at school?! And she stayed with him..disappointing, I see him completely differently now and their *Love story..what a shame 😕

I didn’t realise he left her to have Cruz on her own. What a pig.

1month · 06/10/2023 20:10

I loved the show and I think it was nice to see more of their personalities, as they’re very private people.

I do like David but I didn’t expect to come away from it liking Victoria more and having a new respect for her.

I always thought she was the decision maker and he followed her around like a puppy.

But actually he was quite selfish and I think the show showed him in quite a bad light.

If anyone has watched at home with the fury’s, there were a lot of similarities between David and Tyson I thought.

I know Tyson has ADHD and bi-polar so it’s more extreme but they both choose to do something and do it and don’t think about their wives and kids.
Perhaps that’s what makes them so successful.

I did not realise how much hate he got from the World Cup though, that was awful!!

His dad sounds bordering on abusive though and not very nice to David, his siblings or his wife.

Clemally · 06/10/2023 20:12

Literally the only anecdote I’ve heard about VB is that her dad took her to school in a Rolls Royce, glad they incorporated that into the documentary, all the fresh material 🙄

@Pumpkinoutfitsgalore I've just always found Victoria snobby, she gives me pompous vibes. People know her because of her husband, it wasn't for him she wouldn't have handbag lines for thousands of pounds.

Well that’s simply not true is it… when they first got together she was one fifth of the biggest pop group on the planet, he was just an up-and-comer at Man Utd…

I don’t know what he’s like in real life, but I’ve met her several times through a volunteering gig I used to have. She/they do a lot for charity, without any fanfare, and I always found her very warm and genuine. Not at all like she’s portrayed in the media.

And to be honest, as disproportionate and graceless as David’s behaviour was, I can understand his frustration at being passed up for a knighthood. He’s been a great ambassador for English football overseas, has done a lot for charity, was a big part of the 2012 Olympic campaign… they’ve given knighthoods to other sportspeople for less.

It’s just a shame they appear to be raising children to be useless, vacuous, famous-for-being-famous types.

No celeb is going to intentionally make themselves look really bad.

Any documentary of a celeb that they have a hand in is going to be filmed in a way that they like.

The kardashians are filmed everyday for most of the day, the cameras follow them around almost everywhere.

Then they decide what is actually shown and then what to say in the interviews to shine them in a better light.

They’re quite honest about being reluctant to put things in like physical fights etc which could show them in a bad light and so there’s bound to be lots that they don’t put in.

Of course this documentary left out a lot of bad stuff or even boring stuff but I think it was put together really well and I think they were a lot more honest about things than they needed to be.
It definitely wasn’t all positive, even though the show is about putting David in a positive light.

I definitely have less respect for David and more respect for Victoria and I think David’s dad is a nasty piece of work.
And so I think it was good that they were so truthful.

God love you and your innocence!

(I am *one)

AhNowTed · 06/10/2023 20:41

@1month

I agree, no celeb will willingly put themselves in a bad light.

Which means this show is a PR piece, and by no means a "documentary".

Beckham even chose the director, for "his" so-called documentary.

Come on, are folks really this naive.

“I got a call from Leo DiCaprio’s office,” recalls Stevens, who directed the DiCaprio-produced 2016 climate change film “The Flood.” “Leo and David were hanging out, and David [had] been looking for a director of his documentary — and Leo suggested me.”

Oh is this about the tantrum about not being knighted?

I totally reckon the Queen had the measure of David Beckham 😂😂

Uggtrending · 06/10/2023 20:52

@AngeloMysterioso erm Spice girls were fantastic but wasn't VB the one to decline the reunion? I didn't think she kept in touch with the other spice girls really. VB has the most money though the other spice girls aren't in Victoria's league finically that isn't down to spice girls though. Now you come on!

CakeInAJar · 06/10/2023 20:52

People know her because of her husband

Shes part of the world’s most famous girl band.

What a bizarre thing to say

pilates · 06/10/2023 20:57

How disappointing if he is a serial cheat 😞 Why are they doing the documentary now? They have always seemed quite private people.

Uggtrending · 06/10/2023 20:59

@CakeInAJar be delusional if you want to. We are all aware that VB can't sing hence her sole career. VB is no Emma Burton...
