Enjoyed watching the documentary, he was different than I expected him to be, not sure how really, but I have more respect for Victoria now as I think their lives have been about what he wanted/needed mainly
There are rumours of lots of affairs, is this true though as I find that hard to believe, he seemed so obsessed with her

He strikes me as an obsessive, hard working perfectionist who’s emotionally as thick as a brick and as deep as a puddle.

One listen to his Desert Island Discs episode tells me that.

Victoria is clearly Standing By Her Man, god knows why. She could do better, in my opinion. But it seems to work for them.

@Pumpkinoutfitsgalore I've just always found Victoria snobby, she gives me pompous vibes. People know her because of her husband, it wasn't for him she wouldn't have handbag lines for thousands of pounds.

Ponoka7 · 06/10/2023 11:06

Did he mention that very often he's the only celebrity to claim back expenses when doing charity work? Or why once he got his OBE his charity work trailed off and the first time he was turned down for a knighthood he called the select committee unappreciative cunts, because being a footballer should be enough. Then there's his nice little pay packet from Qatar, after selling himself at one point as a gay icon. There reality show in the US failed, so we have this fairytale.

HobbiddoH · 06/10/2023 11:08

Also Google what was found in his hacked emails in response to not being given a knighthood. In fact, don’t, I’ll just post it below

If you live in Nottingham you’d see them pretty regularly because there’s a well known undertaker chain who have a fleet of them.

dianamoonyan · 06/10/2023 11:10

Yikes what is the point of a clean house or millions in the bank if your DH is hoachin?

Uggtrending · 06/10/2023 11:12

@stealthninjamum perhaps your definition of WC differs to mine. Can you image the cost alone to maintain a Rolls Royce? Like I said.... you don't really see those type of cars around often. VB father was an electronics engineer and opened a business from that which did pretty well.

AhNowTed · 06/10/2023 11:14

stealthninjamum · 06/10/2023 10:56

i have only seen one clip and I wonder if it’s reflective of his attitude towards her. She’s describing how they came from a working class background. He’s in another room but keeps putting his head through the door saying ‘tell them what car your dad drove’. He kept interrupting until she admitted her dad had a rolls Royce. maybe it’s not reflective of the whole show but it felt like he was trying to demean her. If he wanted to sit down and take part in the interview then he should’ve done it. Apart from anything I dont think it’s fair to say people who are working class don’t have rolls Royces but he kind of stopped her making her point.

To me he seemed like a bit of a twat but I’m prepared to admit it’s their sense of humour as I haven’t seen the programme.

You do realise that the camera angle is all set up in advance to capture his peeping round the door moment?

She was a spice girl and was a HUGE star, arguably more than DB at the time. They have built the Beckham brand together.

littleripper · 06/10/2023 11:19

It's a social media post, not a documentary. The old "he is so sweet and she is SOOOOOOO funny" bullshit. They are both ruthlessly ambitious money obsessed narcs. He has had endless affairs, it is a business relationship. That is not a documentary.

stealthninjamum · 06/10/2023 11:19

ahnowted it wasn’t something I had thought about. Thanks.

So it was maybe partly scripted / expected? I think if dp or exh were talking crap I wouldn’t be publicly contradicting them which is why I felt uncomfortable with this. I guess she’s happy then.

QueenoftheNimbleFlyingCat · 06/10/2023 11:20

I really enjoyed the programme. I'm sure he's cheated on her a lot and there did seem an undercurrent of disdain for her now but they both came across really well.

People know her because of her husband?? How demeaning can you get?? She was part of the biggest pop group of the 90s, who have left a marked cultural significance on pop culture across the world. He spent the latter part of the 90s being viewed in scorned due to his behaviour in the 98’ World Cup. She made their ‘brand’, and she may have well had a fashion career in spite of him. Plenty of people have moved from their mainstream media endeavours into other professions. The Olsen twins instantly spring to mind.

I don’t care about the documentary though. It will very much be a very doctored narrative, possibly to gain favour when some inevitable bad behaviour will come out in future. Nothing covers a few affairs and forgotten kids with a fluff piece about how ‘lovely and normal’ the A Listers who long lost touch with their grassroots are.

I know this too because I watched that Flashy Funerals documentary they were in

....Also misses point of thread.....

Someone my dad knows has met David and Victoria, this was years ago though when they were living in that Beckingham palace

GasPanic · 06/10/2023 11:41

I think they are both interesting people. Both are pretty much self made. Victoria has lots of experience in the pop/entertainment industry and fashion, David with sports. They have been subject to high amounts of media interest/pressure yet have remained together and raised a family even though they have had their issues. I'm sure their biography will be presented the way they want it to be - that is their privilege.

Their story is a lot more interesting to me than Harry and Megan.

This.

The real David Beckham is entirely transparent through his odious emails about wanting a knighthood and trying to fleece charities for his expenses.

Not some pre-planned puff piece.

He just doesn’t appear the type to cheat, he did seem very in love with her

That's his media personality. You have no idea what he's like once the camera is switched off

Mirabai · 06/10/2023 11:51

There are loads of women who stay with cheating husbands. I suspect it’s a combination of loving him, liking the status as a power couple, and the fact they’ve still got a school-age kid.

MustbeFeverTree · 06/10/2023 11:55

AhNowTed · 06/10/2023 10:04

It's highly contrived and curated.

It's certainly not a "documentary".

Part of Team Beckham's relentless campaign to get David a knighthood.

Read the foul mouthed rant he had a few years back when he was passed over by the honours committee.

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 06/10/2023 10:45

I have only seen the first episode and I think it comes across like Victoria was always wanting to be in the forefront of his mind. Like why tell him she was pregnant a day before the biggest match of his career? That's just ridiculous. Allowing him to drive hours for a few minutes. The whole thing is like an abuse of his love for her.

She told him she was pregnant with his much wanted baby, not that she was breaking up with him, or had slept with his best friend! I don't much like the woman, but come on, it's hardly unreasonable to want to share news that you're pregnant with the most significant person in your life!

that's such a lazy attack, ever heard of the Spice Girls at all?

They might have made the most of each other's strength and fame, but it doesn't diminish her achievements. Even Kate Middleton wears her brand, Victoria has done very well.

Wanttobefree2 · 06/10/2023 13:27

I enjoyed the documentary but I did think he would be really annoying to live with, with his obsessive tidying and cleaning for hours on end.
