A woman is a woman

For those who have been following the Tory conference and general themes of their speeches…

How do you feel about Sunak’s speech?

I know there has been a lot of discussion on here from those who didn’t want to vote for a party that didn’t know the definition of a woman.

Rishi has stated clearly that “a woman is a woman and a man is a man.” While I’d argue that still isn’t a definition, per se, he is appeasing this way of thinking.

So I’m just wondering. Is this enough for you to vote Tory at the next election?

No

RaeHitsEbSire · 06/10/2023 07:31

No

LovelyMMOG · 06/10/2023 07:31

Heavens, no. Labour have tied themselves in a knot over trans rights but they’re still by far the better option.

Dustpantsandbush · 06/10/2023 07:31

No.

Spanne · 06/10/2023 07:31

Nope.

TeenDivided · 06/10/2023 07:32

I don't think my Tory MP is in line with this common sense statement.

I have no idea who to vote for. I'm hoping one of the other parties returns to sensible thinking on this issue before the election.

WandaWonder · 06/10/2023 07:32

Well knock me down with a feather, wow great news, who'd have thought

ViolettaVonVargon · 06/10/2023 07:33

No one ever admits to voting Tory on mumsnet, it’s just a klaxon to get abuse. Obviously lots do though otherwise they wouldn’t have spent the last 13 years in power

ZebraD · 06/10/2023 07:34

I am sick and tired of hearing women being watered down to non existence - chest feeding etc!
however, why on earth would rishi saying that make anyone consider for even a second voting for the lying cheating theiving arseholes?! They are a disgrace and anyone voting for them should be ashamed…in my opinion.

hannahwaddinghamsbiceps · 06/10/2023 07:35

I've never voted Tory in my life. I work for the NHS.
However understanding what a woman is seems to be beyond the parties I would normally vote for.
How can the rights of a group be protected if the group being protected can't be defined correctly?
I am politically homeless.

EmotionSickness · 06/10/2023 07:36

I wonder if the tories have any plans to actually protect women (and not just the definition of one).

Iwantitidontwantit · 06/10/2023 07:36

Never. The way they've hijacked a really emotive issue for political gain makes me feel sick. The trans rights issue is being used as an easy target to appeal to bigots, along with immigration. And I say that as a woman who does have concerns regarding women's safe spaces, sport etc. It's such a hard topic that needs careful listening on both sides and this is a gross political vote grab

ahtred · 06/10/2023 07:36

No, as much as the trans issue infuriates and worries me, it's not the key issue I will be voting over, allowing the Tories back in over what is actually quite small issue (especially now I feel common sense might actually prevail) would be giving the issue more gravitas than it deserves. I won't let my vote be swayed to this horrific government because of this intensely irritating situation.

Immoralplant · 06/10/2023 07:37

I’ve never voted Tory.
I’m not keen on voting for them now, but I will only vote for a party whose leader knows what a woman is.

OurfriendsintheNE · 06/10/2023 07:37

Not a chance

True

AWellReadWoman · 06/10/2023 07:38

This is an issue that I feel incredibly strongly about but this announcement still won't entice me to vote conservative.

Mercurial123 · 06/10/2023 07:39

It's a cheap way to get votes. They are useless and can't be trusted. Yet people will vote for them on this issue.

LunaNorth · 06/10/2023 07:39

God no.
I can’t vote for any of them.

Xiaoxiong · 06/10/2023 07:39

I'd like to know what his definition of a woman is, given that he's in the same party as Penny Mordaunt and Crispin Blunt.

No point saying "a woman is a woman" if a woman is "anyone who says they are a woman".

hannahwaddinghamsbiceps · 06/10/2023 07:41

Trans rights are the same as everyone else's. The right to privacy and dignity should be the same for everyone.
I hate that anyone who points out that anyone's WANTS are less
important than another person's NEEDS and RIGHTS is automatically labelled a bigot. Particularly when we are talking about biological facts.

Nicole1111 · 06/10/2023 07:41

I can’t bear the incredibly transparent diversion techniques in an attempt get votes. We care about women. But not the ones starving. We care about women. But not the ones who can’t afford their rent. We care about women. But not the ones in the refuges we’re closing down. We care about women. But not the ones being raped who have a 1% chance of their rapist being convicted.

Hufflepods · 06/10/2023 07:42

It’s a whole lot of soundbite pandering to the fanatics who think this shit is more important than nhs waiting lists, crumbling schools, access to childcare…

Sarah2891 · 06/10/2023 07:42

Nothing could make me vote Tory. Absolute scumbags.

Watchitsunshine · 06/10/2023 07:43

Yes. I will.
