A woman is a woman

For those who have been following the Tory conference and general themes of their speeches…

How do you feel about Sunak’s speech?

I know there has been a lot of discussion on here from those who didn’t want to vote for a party that didn’t know the definition of a woman.

Rishi has stated clearly that “a woman is a woman and a man is a man.” While I’d argue that still isn’t a definition, per se, he is appeasing this way of thinking.

So I’m just wondering. Is this enough for you to vote Tory at the next election?

I sure I would also agree with rishi sunk that the sky is blue.

Him stating facts, would never make me vote Tory.

Mercurial123 · 06/10/2023 07:39

It's a cheap way to get votes. They are useless and can't be trusted. Yet people will vote for them on this issue.

However it is certainly wonderous that the other parties seem unable to even pretend that they care about women's rights to safety, privacy and dignity.

How can we be expected to vote for other parties when they are so happy to throw the rights of women under a bus? Left to them we would have no rights to single sex rape groups, NHS wards, prisons, sports, toilets, etc.

TheaBrandt · 06/10/2023 07:45

It’s very difficult for me as here is a straight Tory libdem neck and neck seat. Always voted libdem but they are so insane on this I don’t know what to do.

Theunamedcat · 06/10/2023 07:49

Probably not but I'm torn this is one of many important issues for me

Theeyeballsinthesky · 06/10/2023 07:49

I’m hugely GC but I’d rather cut my arm off than vote Tory. However can’t vote labour, libdem or Green either as they all pretevd men can be women

so like many women on MN I’m politically homeless

CorylusAgain · 06/10/2023 07:49

No.
Despite every attempt by TRAs to gaslight the rest of the population into believing a gender critical belief is a right wing alignment, that is just not the case. All my gc feminist friends are (or were) lifelong Labour voters. Most, like me now feel politically homeless.

EmotionSickness · 06/10/2023 07:53

For those who are politically homeless (which I completely understand and sympathise with), are you potentially thinking of not voting and just dealing with whatever the rest of the population choose, but with the knowledge you had no part in it?

Or perhaps hold your nose and vote for the “least worst” option?

I feel politically homeless too, although for different reasons. I was previously a staunch Labour voter but just not sure what they stand for at the moment - hoping come election time they’d make it more obvious.

My worry is that voting for parties other than Tory or Labour just splits the vote and doesn’t really help 🤷🏼‍♀️

Never. The way they've hijacked a really emotive issue for political gain makes me feel sick. The trans rights issue is being used as an easy target to appeal to bigots, along with immigration. And I say that as a woman who does have concerns regarding women's safe spaces, sport etc. It's such a hard topic that needs careful listening on both sides and this is a gross political vote grab

Yes yes this ^^^

MidnightOnceMore · 06/10/2023 07:55

The speech was a remarkable low point in this Tory government's deliberate destruction of the country.

Sunak is about to shaft the entire north of England - and therefore the whole country, because we all need economic growth - for short term political reasons and he threw in that line about women because it is an easy way to get a big round of applause. He didn't actually have any meaningful policies that would benefit women.

The important thing about that speech was it was so devoid of any announcement of value. Nothing on cost of living, nothing on the NHS, no investment in education (the A levels thing is just air), nothing on environment, nothing of substance on crime...

Sunak is going to rip up HS2 and is pretending he will build other schemes - but these are just empty words. He's going to sell off the HS2 land so NO future goverment can ever build an upgrade on that land - that is such a short term act of vandalism and shows his contempt for the entire north.

Sunak = short term decisions for a shitter future.

Theeyeballsinthesky · 06/10/2023 07:57

I’m currently in a hitherto safe Tory seat but it could fall to Labour this time. I’m waiting to see what the Labour candidate who is likely to be a woman says about it before I decide @EmotionSickness

ChaToilLeam · 06/10/2023 07:57

I still would not vote for them. Knowing the difference between a man and a woman is basic stuff, it is like saying the sky is blue.

The problem is that there is no sane, effective opposition. Right now there is no party I would give my vote to, it would come down to the individual candidates.

Starmer could come out now and say the same and perhaps retain a little credibility, but of course half the Labour Party would go nuts.

NotTerfNorCis · 06/10/2023 07:58

I think genderism is slowly fading away anyway. It's a fad for the kids and it'll become untrendy. Genderism isn't just about tolerance for trans people, it's an irrational belief system which tranforms 'gender' into personality.

PencilsInSpace · 06/10/2023 07:59

No. I remain politically homeless. I will probably spoil my vote again unless there's a decent independent candidate. It will make fuck all difference because I live in a very safe Labour seat.

AgnesX · 06/10/2023 07:59

That bunch of lying Ratbags. Not a cat in hell's chance.

I do realise they're all much of a muchness. Depressingly.

longwayoff · 06/10/2023 07:59

As if. I'd be more reassured if he knew what the duties of a PM are, thus developing policies that ensure the population has adequate access to housing and enough food to eat. Not interested in any statement he cares to make about genitalia.

SophiaElise · 06/10/2023 08:01

Nope!

We've had a Tory government for 13 years.

The erosion of women's rights happened under them.

VimtoVimto · 06/10/2023 08:03

No, because they are taking a nuanced issue and turning it into a sound bite to appeal to a certain group of people. It reminds me of the headlines like not being able to sing Christmas carols or not include the word Easter on chocolate eggs.

perichickenwings · 06/10/2023 07:54

It isn't that hard a topic really when you unpick it.

Trans people have all the basic rights everyone else has. e.g Employment, housing, justice etc.
The right they don't/shouldn't have is to insert themselves into opposite sex spaces.
If they want third spaces hen these would be broadly accepted by pretty much everyone, but that doesn't validate them as 'actually being the opposite sex' so they don't want third spaces.
They also shouldn't have the right to demand that everyone else mangles the English language for them, nor to demand that no one disagrees with them.

If it is a political vote grab you have to wonder why. And the reason is that the other parties have shown no willingness to stand up for women.

So we are in a Handmaids tale situation. If the other parties have better other policies, is that worth giving up the hard won rights of women for? People will fairly disagree on the balance. Short term gain but give up legally knowing what a woman is and the protection that brings to single sex services, or short term loss but hold the line on women's basic fundamental rights.

Glasssand · 06/10/2023 08:03

Where were the policies to help women? There's no way of earth I would ever vote tory and I can't stand Sunak.

Museya15 · 06/10/2023 08:04

I will vote tory, best out of a bad bunch and happy Labour never get in.

SunnieShine · 06/10/2023 08:05

Yes.

Not a chance I'd vote for Conservative. It's certainly wondrous that people ignore the devastation they've caused will be swayed by this.

Why is it bigoted to say humans can't change sex? It isnt a prejudiced belief, it's fact.

Passepartoute · 06/10/2023 08:06

No. Their record on women's issues is dreadful.
