A woman is a woman

For those who have been following the Tory conference and general themes of their speeches…

How do you feel about Sunak’s speech?

I know there has been a lot of discussion on here from those who didn’t want to vote for a party that didn’t know the definition of a woman.

Rishi has stated clearly that “a woman is a woman and a man is a man.” While I’d argue that still isn’t a definition, per se, he is appeasing this way of thinking.

So I’m just wondering. Is this enough for you to vote Tory at the next election?

I’ve never voted Tory.
I’m not keen on voting for them now, but I will only vote for a party whose leader knows what a woman is.

Even if that party have cut mental health and domestic abuse services to the bone?

Even if police have been cut by their tens of thousands and it’s not safe for women to walk alone at night?

Even when our daughters are being stabbed on the street?

It matters more to me that our children have a good education system, a functioning healthcare system and are safe on our streets that a politician who doesn’t give a fuck about women saying he knows what one is.

I can’t bear the incredibly transparent diversion techniques in an attempt get votes. We care about women. But not the ones starving. We care about women. But not the ones who can’t afford their rent. We care about women. But not the ones in the refuges we’re closing down. We care about women. But not the ones being raped who have a 1% chance of their rapist being convicted.

I think the question really is about how long the country can survive under Tory rule. I’d you are GC and see the protection of women’s rights as fundamental then voting for any party that endorses the idea that “women” must include some men and knowing that will be entrenched for another term is fairly hard to justify.

It seems fantastical the the idea that “Trans Women are Women” could secure Tory rule and plunge us into a country that is unlikely to have an nhs or care for its more vulnerable elderly, poor, or disabled adequately but I think that is where we’re heading.

I'm glad he said it, but no.

I wonder how long it will take for this thread to be moved like the other one ...

SophiaElise · 06/10/2023 08:01

Nope!

We've had a Tory government for 13 years.

The erosion of women's rights happened under them.

Edited

I agree it happened under them.

But I don't think it happened by them.

Stonewall et al played a very clever game. They set themselves up as EDI experts, infiltrated at the top level of organisations such as the NHS, trained people in 'Stonewall law' rather than actual law, pretended there was no conflict.
Everyone trusted Stonewall because of their history in LGB rights.

By the time people woke up to what was happening too many organisations were captured, and people blindfolded by the 'be kind' mantra. Not helped of course by there being more men (who are less impacted by all this) in positions of influence.

PinkRoses1245 · 06/10/2023 08:08

God no, there’s nothing that would make me vote for them. I don’t even pay attention to what rubbish they spout

Caughtinlove · 06/10/2023 08:09

Am GC. Still could never bring myself to vote Tory. They really have wrought havoc on this country for the last 13 years. People like Suella Braverman are genuinely scary. Also did you see Penny Mordaunt 's speech at conference? Stand up and fight? Utterly barking.

The other one had a poll at majority yanbu probably why it got moved.

Never. The way they've hijacked a really emotive issue for political gain makes me feel sick. The trans rights issue is being used as an easy target to appeal to bigots, along with immigration. And I say that as a woman who does have concerns regarding women's safe spaces, sport etc. It's such a hard topic that needs careful listening on both sides and this is a gross political vote grab

Bigots?

CountryStore · 06/10/2023 08:12

I have never voted tory and would never vote tory. I can't believe we've got to a point where woman and man even need to be defined.
There's no one who I speak to irl who thinks people can really change sex. No one.

TeenDivided · 06/10/2023 08:12

All of this debate would be neutralised instantly if Labour and Lib Dems and Greens would just stand up and say 'We have listened to women, we support single sex exemptions in excluding transwomen and male non binaries'

TeenDivided · 06/10/2023 08:12

How do you feel about voting for an MP that can't define women?

SallyWD · 06/10/2023 08:13

No certainly not. Believe it or not, there are other issues out there which I feel very strongly about (climate change, NHS, poverty). I'm desperate to get the Tories out.

DisquietintheRanks · 06/10/2023 08:13

No it's not enough to make me vote tory.

But unless Labour/Greens etc can say likewise I'll not be voting for them either.

vibecheck · 06/10/2023 08:13

I’ve only ever voted Tory but this conference full of racist, bigoted dog-whistles has confirmed they won’t have my vote at the next election. Even if they get rid of inheritance tax (one of my personal big concerns) it’s not enough to win me back over this time. The party is desperate, hence using these ridiculous culture war issues to appeal to people. Praising GB News, an organisation that lacks any journalistic skill or integrity, was the last straw for me. They are no longer a serious party.

Ponderingtosk · 06/10/2023 08:14

I always vote. Must admit I’m thinking of tactically voting in the future and if I felt non were good enough I would spoil my ballot paper.

its about time women’s rights are protected but I do wonder if it’s a vote puller.

I keep wondering if anyone will create a new party, we got the Green Party, might we get a version for women’s rights. (Would seriously love to be humorous enough to think of some catchy name but I’m not 😂).

MangoAF · 06/10/2023 08:15

I probably will. I did last time, we are in a fairly safe Lib Dem seat and I had a lovely reply back from the conservative candidate about women’s sex based rights.
I might vote Labour this time, I do think we need a change and they won’t get in here anyway so more of a protest vote, or perhaps Conservative. I can’t vote for the LDs, this issue is too important for me. It’s existential.
I am hoping it gets settled soon, legislatively speaking, and I can move on mentally and politically.

Its5656 · 06/10/2023 08:17

No

faffadoodledo · 06/10/2023 08:18

I wish it was enough, but it isn't. Labour need to sort themselves out on the issue, and the Lib Dems even more so. But the Tories are a mess, and a nasty one at that - in no fit state to govern

Startingagainandagain · 06/10/2023 08:19

No. I will never vote Tories.

Also they have in power for 13 years...this sudden interest in gender issues is simply a desperate attempt to get a few more votes.

They don't care about anything but making themselves and their mates richer.

The Tory party as far as I am concerned is now a far right monstrosity that have destroyed the country.

Spendonsend · 06/10/2023 08:19

Not really. The tory party is less into group think than labour and unless rishi got a landslide victory i think they would shuffle him from pm within a short timeframe.

I honestly think ruined public services, is worse for women anyway.

CharlotteRumpling · 06/10/2023 08:20

Never.

IsItThough · 06/10/2023 08:25

Astonished that anyone would consider their over a group of power-seekers tactical stances on defining a woman, or not.

Yet more astonished that anyone claiming to be a supporter of women's rights would consider voting Tory given that impact of all of their economic policies on women and girls.

If you choose to base your vote on that, you are not a feminist.

SeptemberSuns · 06/10/2023 08:26

Oh yeah, he's a transphobic wanker, that will make me change my mind and vote for all of his elitist privileged policies!

LizzieSiddal · 06/10/2023 08:27

EmotionSickness · 06/10/2023 07:36

I wonder if the tories have any plans to actually protect women (and not just the definition of one).

They’ve been in power for 13 years and let this shit show develop! They have the ability to say a lot without actually doing a single thing.
