I’m looking at you Alison Hammond. FFS.

It seems to take slightly more effort and muscles for me to say mallow rather than mellow.

AmIAutumnalNow · 03/10/2023 23:44

Why would anyone pronounce it Mellow?

What about mallow cones. How do these odd people pronounce them?

Cheesenpickleontoast · 03/10/2023 23:45

What's a mallow cone?

XenoBitch · 03/10/2023 23:46

Could this be an accent thing?

2024815pm · 03/10/2023 23:46

Its Marshmellow if you're wearing a bucket head. Otherwise it's=s marshmallow, fact 👍

Tempone · 03/10/2023 23:47

People have different accents. I don't really understand why that would bother anyone.

ErrolTheDragon · 03/10/2023 23:47

Florence4170 · 03/10/2023 23:31

See, I’m hearing mallow. I’d already been there 😀. Having said that, it’s not terribly well enunciated.

Yes, that link audio sounds like 'mallow' and in the sound-by-sound pronunciation below gives the a in mallow to be as in hat.

VioletMountainHare · 03/10/2023 23:49

Yellowcakestand · 03/10/2023 23:14

Marshmellow is a singer isn't he? And also a Fortnite skin

For the past 3 years my classes of 10 year olds have spelled it marshmellow because they see these spellings so often 🙄

Florence4170 · 03/10/2023 23:50

It’s nothing to do with accents.

FrangipaniBlue · 03/10/2023 23:51

The fact people are trying to argue that it's spelt mallow but said mellow is giving me the rage Angry

AmIAutumnalNow · 03/10/2023 23:57

Cheesenpickleontoast · 03/10/2023 23:45

What's a mallow cone?

It's like an ice cream cone but filled with marshmallow

BodegaSushi · 04/10/2023 00:00

I just assumed the spelling being different from the pronunciation was similar to scallops being pronounce scollops.

Anyway I say marshmellow 😂

MardyBra · 03/10/2023 23:14

Talking of language errors, Gregg and John have me shouting at the telly over their use of pronouns and “choritso” for chorizo. All I want is a cooking competition with decent grammar and pronunciation.

Choritso makes me shout at the tv too!

BodegaSushi · 04/10/2023 00:02

See so: clerk pronounced as clark Grin

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 04/10/2023 00:12

greenhydrangea · 03/10/2023 23:29

That's 'a', not 'e'.

If you cant hear the difference, read the phonetic breakdown below the video.

UK ma:ʃmæl.əʊ/ marshmallow

  • /m/ as in moon
  • /ɑː/ as in father
  • /ʃ/ as in she
  • /m/ as in moon
  • /æ/ as in hat
  • /l/ as in look
  • /əʊ/ as in nose

æ/ as in hat

My worst one is when people say "MacDonald's" instead of "McDonalds".

Instant rage!!

Know the difference between Mac and Mc.

Well, does saying Marshmellow or Marshmallow matter?

Do many posts on Mumsnet matter?

It's all subjunctive.....

I just think that if you are getting instant rage due to what could be regional accents and their variations... you might need to get a grip.

Oh Lordy, it wasn't meant that seriously!!

🙄🙄🙄

Do you have trouble understanding little OTT turn of phrases? Sense of humour failure? Or what?

Go to bed, you're obviously tired.

Ohthatsabitshit · 04/10/2023 00:24

Nobody needs to get the rage. I am in charge of pronunciation, so you can just ask me.

It’s MALLOW so don’t be ridiculous with your mellow nonsense.

Yes, I do have trouble with understanding some turn of phrases. I can't help that. Sorry.

Agree. People may speak differently to you and that's okay.

I’ve never heard any one call it marshmellow! How odd.

Same! 😂I’m Scottish but have lived in England for over a decade - London and the north west. I’m so confused
