Yes, that link audio sounds like 'mallow' and in the sound-by-sound pronunciation below gives the a in mallow to be as in hat.

For the past 3 years my classes of 10 year olds have spelled it marshmellow because they see these spellings so often 🙄

I just assumed the spelling being different from the pronunciation was similar to scallops being pronounce scollops.
