So glad I didn’t watch it. People saying marshmellow make me murderous.

I like Alison, but not her myriad language errors. And all the ‘was you’…🤨

Talking of language errors, Gregg and John have me shouting at the telly over their use of pronouns and “choritso” for chorizo. All I want is a cooking competition with decent grammar and pronunciation.

Marshmellow is a singer isn't he? And also a Fortnite skin

Ponoka7 · 03/10/2023 23:14

I say Marshmellow but say Squishmallow, never thought about it before.

Lightbulbspark · 03/10/2023 23:14

It's pronounced marshmellow isn't it? Written as mallow; not that I've ever looked too hard while ripping open the packet.

Isittimeformynapyet · 03/10/2023 23:17

I was having this debate with someone yesterday. They agreed that it's spelled mallow but just shrugged and said "yeah, but it's mellow".

Same person says poker dot, despite it clearly being "polka".

Make it make sense 🤯!!!

No, you're pronouncing it wrong 🙈

We are encouraging you to think about it now @Ponoka7.

Come join us on the path of everything that is good and right.

Please note the lack of a light-hearted disclaimer by the way. This is important.

@greenhydrangea which dictionaries? (Not trying to catch you out, am interested)

Floatlikeafeather2 · 03/10/2023 23:26

greenhydrangea · 03/10/2023 23:12

It is spelt "marshmallow" but pronounced "marshmellow" (according to several UK dictionaries) when speaking about the sweet, which is not made from the marshamallow plant anyway.

I don't know where you've got your information from but it is definitely not pronounced "mellow" and I can't find anywhere on line that says it is. The audio pronunciation guides are also very clear on this. Marshmallows were originally flavoured with marshmallow root which was thought to have medicinal properties.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 03/10/2023 23:28

This just reminded me of

It's Wingardium LeviOHsa not LevioSAAA Grin

SlippySarah · 03/10/2023 23:29

Weird incorrect pronunciations are definitely a pet hate of mine and people saying marshmellow is up there. I didn't watch bake off this eve but to be fair to AH is it her accent, rather than ignorance?

Isittimeformynapyet · 03/10/2023 23:29

Just checked Howjsay.com

Of course it's Mallow.

My DS mispronounces it. I have failed at parenting.

Not yet you haven't. Only after correcting him 20,000 times consistently and he still does it can you put on your dunce mum cap.
Keep trying.

If you live in the West Midlands you'll hear this frequently (wince). Alison Hammond's mum didn't try hard enoughGrin

Florence4170 · 03/10/2023 23:31

See, I’m hearing mallow. I’d already been there 😀. Having said that, it’s not terribly well enunciated.

Mamai90 · 03/10/2023 23:31

My mum is from the North of England she pronounces it marshmellow, therefore, so did my sister and I as children but I corrected myself as I realised in Ireland everyone else pronounced it how it was spelt.

Incidently my sisters kids now say 'marshmellow' too😆

He’s a final year uni student. I’m a complete failure.

Ah well that does put a different light on it, OP. Yes you have failed...but it probably won't come up in his viva so that nailed on First should be safeWink

Oh you're not talking about Mac'nCheese are you? That definitely is an abomination too far.

Gowlett · 03/10/2023 23:43

I think both mallow / mellow are okay, once you don’t spell it wrong!
