One for the ladies.. my first Hollywood wax was horrendous

I thought my pain threshold was okay. I’ve had microblading, lip fillers, nose piercing.. but I’ve never felt pain like it.

I went for a Hollywood this morning and ended up getting an extended bikini wax because I couldn’t stand the pain any longer! I gave up. It honestly made me nearly cry and she wasn’t even at the worst bit yet. She did mention that because I had shaved last week, it’ll be more sensitive and also because my period was also last week.

It still really really hurts now and it feels burny/really uncomfortable.

The first one is always the most painful - it gets a lot better after that!
You ideally need a couple of weeks growth before a wax at least. Maybe 3 or 4 weeks if you can.
And yes, your cycle will affect your pain threshold unfortunately.

AperolWhore · 19/09/2023 16:49

i feel your pain! I cannot cope with the pain of waxing but yet I’m totally fine with Botox, fillers and vampire facials, they don’t hurt at all but wowzers waxing is next level!

BashfulClam · 19/09/2023 16:52

I managed it and I’m a wuss. Ibuprofen an hour before and it was fine.

Chronicallyknackered · 19/09/2023 17:19

Honestly it gets better. I'm a few years into my waxing journey and I barely flinch now apart from the central strip, can have a normal conversation about dogs and houses etc during the treatment. Would really recommend going to someone who specialises in waxing , using hot wax only. It they try using warm wax and paper strips on you will hurt far more !

bryceQ · 19/09/2023 17:27

Depends on loads of factors.

The skill of the waxer
What type they use (eg hot or strip)
Your hair texture
Length of your hair
Your menstrual cycle

Etc

I find them fine but have been having for 12 years or so.

It could have just been one bad experience?

comedownwithme · 19/09/2023 17:30

There is no amount of money in the world would make me have my pubes waxed out of my body

Realistically that's not true, everything has its price I suppose, but I wouldn't do it for fun Shock

Hankunamatata · 19/09/2023 17:42

I used to have them regularly and if I hit the wrong totm omg it was horrendous. I made sure to check my cycle and not book then. You need to find a good waxer who isn't squeamish about intimate waxing (so many are even though they offer it and their technique is awful). Whenever iv moved iv read loads of reviews. My most recent one looks distinctly unclassy but they are clean inside and know how to intimate wax

BlueBellsArePretty · 19/09/2023 17:48

I used to not mind Hollywood waxing when it was strip wax since waxers have switched over to hot wax I've stopped getting them done as the pain is just not worth it. It's ironic as it everyone seems to 'wax lyrical' about how how good hot wax is.

Redribbontable · 19/09/2023 17:51

I used to shave it all bald and have the occasional wax but then I realised that a lot of men don't seem to care as long as its tidy or actively dislike it so I thought why am I putting myself through this.

It does depend on strips or hot wax are used as to what happens afterwards. I had strips once and within hours I was left with horrible red lumps that took 2 weeks to go.

Uggtrending · 19/09/2023 17:52

This would be me OP. I can't even imagine going for a Hollywood especially when they do the really intimate part. My mum explained it to me but I couldn't!

Maybe try veet? It does work just leave it on for a good 20/25mins

2023dana · 19/09/2023 17:52

Imagine the pain if you’ve had a csection and they wax over the scar 😭 (even at 6 months later)! I get them for going on holiday though and that inner bit really gets me every time, the more you flinch the more chance they have to do it again though 🤦🏼‍♀️ the rest of it is fine if it’s hot wax and not the wax strips though but oh the inner bit is a killer

EmpressaurusOfCats · 19/09/2023 17:55

Don’t put yourself through it again & then you’ll be ok.

BelindaBears · 19/09/2023 17:57

I used to get one with Lycon wax and it was less painful than a leg wax. Can’t be bothered these days but it’s not because of pain.

Katiemag · 19/09/2023 18:04

I agree with everyone who says that it must be hot wax for intimate waxing. I once got butchered with strips and it wasn’t pleasant! I also once made the mistake of going right before my period and it was a LOT more painful. I was basically jumping around the waxing table!

As long as I follow the rules below, I find a Hollywood wax very bearable (less sore than lip filler which makes me tear-up):

  1. Ensure they use hot wax/Lycon - never strip wax
  2. Dont let the hair grow too long between appointments (my first wax post Covid was tough!)
  3. Avoid appointments just before your period (it is more painful)
  4. Take a couple of ibuprofen 30-60 mins before (don’t know if it actually helps or it is just the placebo effect but knowing I’ve done this calms me!)

Or don’t wax if it is not your thing - nothing wrong either way!

therealcookiemonster · 19/09/2023 18:08

it is horrible yes. I reccommend laser instead. those that say it gets better, does it? maybe just we get more used to it. I've always felt it to be barbaric and hence switched to laser

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 19/09/2023 18:09

I agree with BlueBellsArePretty about hot waxing, it's painful and the pick-picking to get a 'lip' on the wax is really irritating too. Paper strips and warm wax are best for me. I have all hair removed every 4-5 weeks.

As I'm menopausal (goodness knows what stage?), I can't gauge beforehand whether it would hurt more or less because I don't know what my cycle would be now? Anyway, Ibuprofen and paracetamol work ok.

Lastchancechica · 19/09/2023 18:12

Why are you doing this to yourself?
Pointless female torture.

dontchaknow · 19/09/2023 18:17

Got sick of all the ingrowing hairs when I waxed, not to mention the bruising and ouch factor. But I like being at least very trimmed down there if not bald. Frequent shaving works for me. But then I'm very fair and not very hairy, so might not work for others.

Fallingthroughclouds · 19/09/2023 18:21

I just can ever imagine lying there with my legs splayed getting wax spread on my vulva, sounds humiliating and extremely painful. Hopefully fashions will change in our life time and french braids, cornrows or even dreadlocks down there will become en vogue.

How is that any of your business?

It would be great to actually have a thread where discussion of waxing and methods doesn't degenerate to why women should have agency to do what they want with their own bodies.

It's not about the perceived rights and wrongs and if you can't leave other women to their choices then respectfully, shove off.

MartyFunkhouser · 19/09/2023 18:28

I’m a hollywooder. As others have said, hot wax only and make sure it’s all really trimmed before you go.

My beautician is so efficient and adroit, I honestly barely flinch. She does it all so expertly, from the positions to get you into, to telling you where to hold etc - she absolutely flies through it and leaves me without a single hair.

I’ve had really crappy beauticians do it over the years and it’s been much less pleasant.

DelurkingLawyer · 19/09/2023 18:36

I’ve been having a hollywood for 20 years. Started off in the bad old days with strip wax. The first one really hurt and was definitely the worst by far, but it has got less and less over the years and they now use hot wax which I find much better. I’ve been waxing for so long there isn’t much hair save for on the undercarriage and I barely notice it with a good waxer.

LookingForPurpose · 19/09/2023 18:39

Can you explain this to me. Intimate bit? Like is that inner flappage and your hairy hoop? Sounds eye watering. Is it worse than leg waxing? When I'm your cycle is the BEST time? I feel so naive 😂🤷🏼‍♀️

NowWhattt · 19/09/2023 18:42

I shave mine as the alternative.
I absolutely don’t want a hairy fanny , even though hair is meant to be there and and hats off to those of you who put yourselves through the agony of having it waxed.
It literally makes me cross my legs at even the thought of it.
