To be confused about my partner's nationality

1000 replies

ForestryForever · 11/09/2023 22:04

Good evening,
My partner's parents were both born in Wales. They both lived and grew up in Wales. As adults they both left Wales and lived in England, where they remained.
Whilst married and living in England, they had a baby - my partner. My partner was born, raised in and grew up in England, and still lives in England.
What nationality is my partner?

English, if he grew up here. But also Welsh.

VesperLind · 11/09/2023 22:05

He’s British.

UnctuousUnicorns · 11/09/2023 22:05

British.

Dartmoorcheffy · 11/09/2023 22:05

English with Welsh heritage

TregunaMekoides · 11/09/2023 22:05

British

YakChewCrumbs · 11/09/2023 22:06

English but I think he could play for Wales!

BaronessBomburst · 11/09/2023 22:06

British Grin
He's English, with Welsh heritage.

TheMountainsCall · 11/09/2023 22:06

He's whichever he identifies with most.

Comedycook · 11/09/2023 22:07

What passport does he hold? That's your answer

Alstroemeria123 · 11/09/2023 22:07

He would be a British national

XenoBitch · 11/09/2023 22:07

My grandad was from an English family, but born and raised in Wales. Had the accent and was a Welsh speaker. What is he? And then what I am?
It is confusing.
I have an ex who happened to be born in the US... had a US passport but British parents. What is he?
Arg!

steff13 · 11/09/2023 22:08

What does he think it is? I'd go with that.

Yarnysaurus · 11/09/2023 22:08

His legal nationality is British.

But he can call himself Welsh if he wants to.

Iwasafool · 11/09/2023 22:08

Welsh or English, either or both really but legally British I would assume.

ForestryForever · 11/09/2023 22:08

Partner doesn't identify with being British.
Identifies with a country, not a landmass.
I need to know if you think the answer is English or Welsh.

Surely it's whatever he considers himself to be? My mother was born in England to an Irish mother and English father. They moved to Ireland before she was three. She considers herself Irish.

Hont1986 · 11/09/2023 22:08

He's English but I expect he calls himself Welsh.

Bruisername · 11/09/2023 22:09

British and then he gets to decide what he is

i know kids whose parents are the same nationality but not British - in all cases their kids who have lived here all their lives see themselves as both. Not sure what they will decide as adults

Irridescantshimmmer · 11/09/2023 22:09

Welsh, he is first generation Welsh was born in Wales and of Welsh parents.

The Welsh would be not one bit happy if anyone accused a Welsh person of being English.

HairyKitty · 11/09/2023 22:09

He can only be English if Welsh and English are the same thing, otherwise he’s British (Welsh).
If my children are born in Egypt it will never make them Egyptian (in the sense of having Egyptian descent).

MaybeanothertimeNotReally · 11/09/2023 22:10

British with Welsh heritage.
I am British with heritage from abroad.

Stroopwaffels · 11/09/2023 22:10

British.

MadeForThis · 11/09/2023 22:10

If he wants to be Welsh then he is Welsh.
If he wants to be English then he is English.

Either is correct.

It's up to him to decide.

Sushione · 11/09/2023 22:10

He has dual nationality. He could play for 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 or 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 ⚽️ (other sports probably exist)

I need to know if you think the answer is English or Welsh.

You need to ask him. What would he tell you? There's your answer.

Identity is more complex than where you grew up or were born.
