To be confused about my partner's nationality

ForestryForever · 11/09/2023 22:04

Good evening,
My partner's parents were both born in Wales. They both lived and grew up in Wales. As adults they both left Wales and lived in England, where they remained.
Whilst married and living in England, they had a baby - my partner. My partner was born, raised in and grew up in England, and still lives in England.
What nationality is my partner?

My parents did exactly the same. My sister and I were born in England but consider ourselves 100%Welsh

English with Welsh heritage

This is your answer.

Xiaoxiong · 11/09/2023 22:12

Many people in the UK will have multiple identities because the UK is a union of nations. He doesn't need to be either English or Welsh - he can be both and whether he personally feels more English or more Welsh will be unique to him and his family and his upbringing.

His nationality for his passport will be the UK, regardless of whether he is English, Welsh, both or neither.

ginandtonicwithlimes · 11/09/2023 22:12

English as born in England but with Welsh heritage.

Mumofteenandtween · 11/09/2023 22:12

He is British. He is eligible to represent both England and Wales at sport.

Irridescantshimmmer · 11/09/2023 22:09

Welsh, he is first generation Welsh was born in Wales and of Welsh parents.

The Welsh would be not one bit happy if anyone accused a Welsh person of being English.

Partner wasn't born in Wales!

British. England and Wales are the same country, legally speaking.

Dotcheck · 11/09/2023 22:13

Welsh.

He is born in England so has an English accent maybe with a bit of Welsh mixed in. He is English and Welsh. Not sure why anyone would be offended about being called English in that scenario?

steff13 · 11/09/2023 22:14

This is what google says:

Because they can identify with either Welsh or British, there is no one answer to this question. Nationality is not only based on where you were born, but also on your family's history.

He can be whichever he wants. Why question him?

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 11/09/2023 22:15

Welsh for sports

British for passports

ginandtonicwithlimes · 11/09/2023 22:15

Dotcheck · 11/09/2023 22:13

richteaftw · 11/09/2023 22:15

Why are you trying to figure it out?

Hont1986 · 11/09/2023 22:16

We had this with a boy at our school in south England. His dad was Scottish and he was convinced that this made him Scottish too. He was born and raised in England, had an English accent, don't think he even travelled to Scotland much. He wasn't Scottish, however much he might have wanted to be.

nationallampoons · 11/09/2023 22:17

Welsh, the English are their own ethnic group as are the Welsh

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 11/09/2023 22:17

I was born in England and have an EU Passport.

It's possible to be more than one thing

Comtesse · 11/09/2023 22:18

YakChewCrumbs · 11/09/2023 22:06

English but I think he could play for Wales!

Exactly - could play for either England or Wales!

Hont1986 · 11/09/2023 22:18

English or Welsh is not an ethnicity, anyone can be English or Welsh regardless of their race.

justasoul · 11/09/2023 22:18

DD was born in England to a Welsh and a South American parent and considers herself all three, English-Welsh-Latin American.

Loadedbydeath · 11/09/2023 22:18

ForestryForever · 11/09/2023 22:08

Partner doesn't identify with being British.
Identifies with a country, not a landmass.
I need to know if you think the answer is English or Welsh.

You don't 'need' to know any such thing, because it's irrelevant. He can think of himself how he likes.

elliejjtiny · 11/09/2023 22:19

My dad was born in Wales to English parents and then moved back to England as a toddler. He always used to say he was Welsh if he was watching the rugby and English if he was watching the football!

ginandtonicwithlimes · 11/09/2023 22:19

nationallampoons · 11/09/2023 22:17

Yet born and raised in England with an English accent?

Boomboom22 · 11/09/2023 22:20

Nationality English as is anyone born here I think? Unless that's just USA? Heritage Welsh. Ethnicity British, presumably white British possible some celtic.
