To think Sindy was better than Barbie

The Barbie film has brought back memories of my Sindy doll and accessories i had in the early 80s. I loved this Sindy evening dress and i wanted it in a full size version. https://www.pinterest.co.uk/pin/678214025122537700/

I love pink but there was/is so much of it with Barbie whereas Sindy accessories were all different colours and quite tasteful. I had the four poster bed and the writing bureau. And the gig and horse.

I loved my Sindy ! She had the house with the lift going up the outside and the magic cooker that made the cooking noises ! Oh and the shower. She regularly went camping weekends with the Sindy caravan and buggy ! Did have disco Barbie as well who had short hair and a cool yellow satin jumpsuit 💛

JayAlfredPrufrock · 24/07/2023 18:53

Sindy girl here. And Patch her younger sister. My friend had Tressy whose hair grew. I had the Sindy horse and motorbike but made all her furniture out of shoe boxes.

I remember the magic cooker. Didn't it have a rotisserie at the top and the pans made cooking noises.

Yip the pans made bubbling noises and frying !!

Another Sindy rather then Barbie girl here.. no accessories, but i did dye her hair Black with boot polish (she stank for evermore)

I had a talking Barbie. She had a pink flower attached to a string at the back of her neck and when you pulled it she said things like “I have a date tonight” and “How shallI wear my hair?”

PurpleParrotfish · 24/07/2023 22:15

I had two Sindy dolls, an Amanda Jane and some Flower Fairies. I found Barbie’s proportions creepy - the length of the legs and the tiny feet, she looked a inhuman.

KimberleyClark · 24/07/2023 22:59

Just remembered I had a Mary QuantDaisydoll too, anyon3 else have one of those?

Clarabe1 · 25/07/2023 22:30

Sindy was most definitely English, she had a classy candelabra and a horse. Barbie was an American slut. Absolutely no contest in my mind.

Hocuspocus99 · 25/07/2023 22:45

@MandyMotherOfBrian . I had the Pippa brunette doll , she was called Marie also had Daisy she had lovely curly blonde hair and Sindy the Ballerina , but no Barbie strangely enough . Loved the Pippa dolls and Sindy.

HRTQueen · 25/07/2023 23:07

Sindy is far classier than her trashy distant cousin

Sindy certainly wouldn’t be making a reality film about her life she is sophisticated and has an air of mystery about her

Though at times it’s nice to watch trashy films <can’t wait to see Barbie>

Alltheusernamesiwantedhavegone · 25/07/2023 23:07

Yes, I had Cindy. I had brunette Cindy ( I was/am blonde). Loved her. Over 3 consecutive christmases in the late 70's, I also got Cindy air hostess vanity case, Cindy horse, Cindy nail varnish and lipstick set. Cindy is the best!

Alltheusernamesiwantedhavegone · 25/07/2023 23:09

Sindy not Cindy. My bad!

Splat92 · 25/07/2023 23:13

My mum didn't like Barbie because of her unrealistic proportions so she bought me Sindy. I desperately wanted Barbie though.

HRTQueen · 25/07/2023 23:15

I had a brunette Sindy too

she didn’t have the four story house with the lift on the side. She has a four room bungalow that she has to jump over the partitions to get the the next room, or step outside

Oi OP, you stole my idea for a thread! YANBU obviously. I was a Sindy obsessive and Barbie seemed trashy and naff by comparison, though I succumbed to the American allure of Barbie and the Rockers. (I blame the hot Latino with the Elvis quiff, Rock Star Derek. At the time Sindy and Paul were on a break and a boyfriend was needed. Ken was OK but a bit camp and middle aged in his 80s incarnation).

Anyone else obsessed with the auburn haired Sindys? I think they were discontinued before I got into dolls (1984ish) but I found some in jumble sales.

Tressy. A key in her back to wind her hair in through a hole in her head for short styles; press a button on her tummy and pull the hair to unwind it for long hair! She was ace!!!!

I opened the thread to comment what about Tressy!

Never had one - my Mum bought me a Sheena doll - larger that a Barbie/Tressie/Sindy doll, I think about 18 inches high.
Sparkly mauve trouser suit, very 1970

sheena also had hair that grew if you wound a button on her back

Gadooza · 25/07/2023 23:19

I always preferred Cindy

RustyBear · 25/07/2023 23:20

My mum dressed Sindy & Barbie dolls in 19th century costumes - the Sindys (Sindies?) looked much more authentic.

I did not have Sindy house as my parents could not afford lit. My Sindy lived in the tree house.

If anyone has a Gayle, the black Sindy doll, look after it, they are selling for £1k+ on Ebay, Space Fantasy Sindy with pink hair is selling for £500+. Even the clothes are selling for silly prices, especially the 1960's ones.

I remember when Space Fantasy Sindy was being sold off cheaply in.Woolworths! Luckily I had birthday money.

Black Sindy sounds brilliant. Part of Barbie's appeal was the black friends, who seemed unbelievably cool when even brunette white dolls were exotic. I got a Dee Dee second hand although I didn't get a Steven until my DD1 was collecting.

Now this was my favourite toy EVER. I am 50 and if I could get my hands one I could quite happily spend an afternoon playing with it now. Legend of a toy

Smidge001 · 25/07/2023 23:33

@JenniferBooth I had 2 Sindys and agree with you, they were way better than Barbie. I found my brunette Sindy recently and couldn't believe how cool the stuff was. Look at this fab outfit I had in green! Nothing pink in sight. I had a horse too, with blue jodhpurs and a brown riding helmet. And a great-aunt of min knitted some absolutely beautiful outfits for me in beautiful colours, I don't know what to do with them! They're too beautiful to throw away (in the loft so I can't show photos) and I can't bear to give them away unless I know the recipient will treasure them Blush
