to think female newsreaders and presenters shouldn't wear make up

|I am absolutely sick of seeing men on TV with normal, natural looking faces, and the women sitting next to them with their faces smeared with gunk. Why can't women show normal, natural looking faces on TV too? What a horrendous disgusting message we are passing on to young girls. "You need to waste time and money smearing gunk on your face to be allowed to be seen in public"

I don't give a jog about other peoples opinions on make up I wear it for ME, not for my dh and certainly not some random in the street.

CurlewKate · 20/07/2023 18:52

@BunnyBettChetwynd "Do you think it would harm their career or reputation"

I absolutely do. Or at least, lay them open to awful, sexist abuse. Look what happened to Mary Beard, for example.

CMZ2018 · 20/07/2023 18:54

Mind your own fucking business. When you read the news feel free not to wear it

CurlewKate · 20/07/2023 18:54

"I work in TV & both men & women wear make up .. with men it’s foundation & powder .." Yes. With men it's intended to make them look like themselves off the screen. Women-to make them look like an idealised image of themselves. Very, very different.

Matchinglipsandfingertips · 20/07/2023 18:55

What people should be angry about is that most female beauty company founders sell out to Private Equity which is almost 100% male. I work in the industry and I am sick and tired of building up these wonderful female owned indie brands for the boys to move in. The girlie's can stay in marketing and HR and the 'boys' take over. The industry was founded by woman after the first world war and the invention of movies. The first American female milanaire was a cosmetic company founder (and black!).
Dorothy Gray trained Elizabeth Arden, Helena Rubinstein was a chemist. Jo Malone a fragrance genius. I recently worked with the biggest bullying wanker of my career. He thought a cosmetic company would be a weeze. He had no experience, no style and no real qualifications (but he lied and sweet talked the owner into a huge job). The best thing we can do is support other women. Ask questions about the products, the DEI of the company and spend wisely. You might just like lip balm or the full Joan Collins. Your choice, your money.

the men are wearing makeup, it's pretty common knowledge everyone on TV is wearing makeup.

lots of men wear make up day to day.

anyone can wear whatever they want and lots of people, male and female, like makeup.

Applied well makeup can look beautiful and give the wearer confidence and comfort. Calling it 'gunk' just makes you look ignorant.

Well, er, this isn't at all true, is it? Men aren't discriminated against for not wearing make up in the way women are, for a start. Women aren't discriminated against for wearing it, as men are, either. It's very much a gender stereotyping issue and it sends out appalling messages to children if the women they see on television have faces very obviously made up and men don't.

Would a woman not wearing it be allowed to read the news? Highly unlikely, I think.

Indigotree · 20/07/2023 19:02

I agree with you, OP. It's appalling and disturbing.

Kentucky83 · 20/07/2023 19:05

I wear make-up about twice a year and I think YABVU. I DO think they should have a choice in what they wear but that's about it.

T1Dmama · 20/07/2023 19:09

I don’t wear makeup but I think it would be disgusting to stop presenters wearing makeup if they want to.

Notshaggedbutannoyed · 20/07/2023 19:09

Oh give over. Get a hobby and find something better to do with your time and your life.

Completelydonechick · 20/07/2023 19:10

that definitely sounds like a you problem!

Annemaria · 20/07/2023 19:14

To badger1970
why do you feel the need to insert “Christ” in your post? I find this offensive.

mummy21blueeyed · 20/07/2023 19:18

Are you okay? Like what’s it got to do with you. I feel better with make up on I look better but I too can go weeks without it. It’s not your decision and I really don’t care about what news presenters wear I also wouldn’t encourage my young child to watch the news to be impressionable anyway. They can go outside and see a girl with a face full If they want. People are so weird. Worry ahour your own face and skin.

Harls1969 · 20/07/2023 19:21

Well I wear makeup because I want to, for me, because I like it. I also colour my hair bright, very unnatural colours, wear lairy clothes and have an awful lot of tattoos. I was also, until last year, a teacher. All those young impressionable girls I've corrupted...🙄

Really?

This makes you fed up?

CurlewKate · 20/07/2023 15:06

@toochesterdraws "
On the whole, yes, but I expect you'll come back and give me millions of examples when this is not the case."

I'm just wondering whether you think that a woman could, without comment, appear on TV or in any other high profile role without makeup.

Yes. People really don't care all that much. And if anyone does comment - well it says more about them, doesn't it?

I very rarely wear make-up (mostly due to it setting off my hay fever, but I don't much like the sensation of it on my face either) and I have been known to attend fairly high-profile events with no make-up on. There's no reason why other people couldn't do the same.

Blossomtoes · 20/07/2023 19:33

No reason at all but most women don’t want to. I can’t believe that over 100 years of feminism has resulted in other women judging and trying to police other women’s choices. Such internalised misogyny is just awful.

IpsyUpsyDaisyDoos · 20/07/2023 19:38

orangeleavesinautumn · 19/07/2023 09:12

I don't wear make up. Hate it on myself.

Not one of the women in this article looks "smeared in gunk". They look like normal women wearing some make up.

YukoandHiro · 20/07/2023 19:39

Make presenters definitely wear make up, it's just "natural"

Normal human skin under a camera actually looks like a ghost

bossyrossy · 20/07/2023 19:40

We don’t live in Afghanistan or Iran, we can wear what we like.

Iamintheatticandproud · 20/07/2023 19:40

BunnyBettChetwynd · 19/07/2023 09:26

In all the history of the world women have been told what to do and forbidden from having choices.

It's a wonderful world where women have the freedom to choose. I a woman can choose to go make up free or to enhance what nature gave her then women are winning and so I say I don't care if the newsreader has a flower pot on her head - I'm just happy we live in a society that has women news readers making their own choices.

This, yes! Well said!

Angrywife · 20/07/2023 19:42

I detest full make up looks and today's trend of contouring etc, but I've honestly never considered anyone on TV to be wearing too much (apart from the characters in shows with intentionally bad make-up obviously).

Angrywife · 20/07/2023 19:44

orangeleavesinautumn · 19/07/2023 09:16

so are you not wondering why other people are not angry about the imposition put on women to cover up their natural faces by with ugly, time consuming, expensive and environmentally damaging crap before being allowed to be seen by the public?

It must be exhausting being so angry and judgemental. You do seem very critical of a lot of things
