to think female newsreaders and presenters shouldn't wear make up

|I am absolutely sick of seeing men on TV with normal, natural looking faces, and the women sitting next to them with their faces smeared with gunk. Why can't women show normal, natural looking faces on TV too? What a horrendous disgusting message we are passing on to young girls. "You need to waste time and money smearing gunk on your face to be allowed to be seen in public"

because I am a teacher, and see the devastating impact this has on young girls.

Society and the media are constantly hammering the message home.

You are ugly, you are not fit to be seen in public, spend your money and time covering your face in muck so we don't have to look at your natural features. And do this every time you are out in public. Or you won't get a career or a partner.

Bloody hell. I hope you never taught my kids.

Men on TV & in magazines wear makeup too 😝

MagicFarawayTea · 20/07/2023 19:52

Their face their choice, surely? A lot of people wear makeup to feel a bit more confident. Unless they look like Coco the clown I don’t think it matters.

Bloody hell, who pissed in your cornflakes?
It’s not disgusting for a woman OR a man to wear make-up if it helps make them feel nice about themselves. Make-up to some people is like a pamper day to others. It just feels nice!! Same as clothes, jewellery, tattoos, hair style and colour.
Make-up also helps prevent shine from the studio lights and as most have pointed out, men are wearing a full face too.

@BunnyBettChetwynd "Do you think it would harm their career or reputation"

I absolutely do. Or at least, lay them open to awful, sexist abuse. Look what happened to Mary Beard, for example.

Going make up free definitely didn't harm the career of Orla Guerin or Kate Adie. Nobody is going to be caring if the women's football team don't wear make up.

Critics will slate anything they can and would soon get bored and move onto something else. Most people in the public eye are criticised for something or other and in fact the OP's original comment was criticism about appearance -too much, not too little make up in this case.

DungballInADress · 20/07/2023 20:28

I work in a male dominated industry. My company is 86% male.

I wear a full face of make up every day to work. Not because I think I'm ugly without it, not because I have to in order to get by in such an environment, but because its my game face, my war paint. A layer of protection in an incredibly tough environment between the rest of the world and my softer side. There are women in the business who come in looking like they are ready to go out clubbing, there are women who come in in jeans and work boots and a just about clean tshirt.

The problem is not newsreaders caking their face in make up and making young girls feel ugly. The problem is Kardashians and Love Island and trash reality television telling girls that they have to have make up and injectables, big boobs and bum, a tiny waist and be famous in order to be attractive to men and that being attractive to men is their sole purpose in life. Teenage girls see more of this than they do newsreaders.

SylvieB74 · 20/07/2023 20:28

Women are ‘allowed’ to do whatever they like with their own faces, who do you actually think you are?

Grrrrdarling · 20/07/2023 20:34

orangeleavesinautumn · 19/07/2023 09:16

so are you not wondering why other people are not angry about the imposition put on women to cover up their natural faces by with ugly, time consuming, expensive and environmentally damaging crap before being allowed to be seen by the public?

I am a woman, I rarely wear makeup & I hAve NEVER felt forced to wear makeup by anything I read in a magazine, newspaper, watched on TV or within a workplace!
I was raised in a household where natural was the norm.
How children are brought up initially forms their impressions of what is normal & what isn’t.
People need to raise their children to appreciate beauty in whatever form it comes in. Clearly that didn’t happen in your house & I find that very sad.

Yes girl ❤
I hate trashy TV. Next we will see if most of them is on TV show about the repercussions of cosmetic pre edited when they are old & everything has gone south 😬

Cosmetic procedures not pre-editing 🤣
Although being able to really see yourself before you have a cosmetic procedure, ‘pre-edited’, would be good for many!!!!

Kgiggl3s · 20/07/2023 20:41

Please don't not hide behind 'I'm a teacher'. I too am a teacher and children should be taught to not judge others or question others appearances. You sound like a terrible influence on young girls experimenting with make up etc referring to it as 'that gunk'. While i may understand what point you are trying to make, you go about it with a very offensive and judgemental atittude. Not what a good teacher is about I'm afraid OP - so again please do not hide this behind 'I'm a teacher'... this is YOU and YOUR opinion and has nothing to do with your job.

You need help. It’s none of your business what other women choose to put on their faces. Weirdo.

SusieWicks · 20/07/2023 20:58

I agree with you. I think varied opinion about this is likely and it’s not black and white. Some women feel empowered by makeup others don’t. Personally I don’t. It was a liberating day when I gave the stuff up and stopped the daily routine of it. I also think that girls should see a varied example not a makeup-normative role model. So I think it would be good to have say 5 out of 10 newsreaders etc not wearing the makeup.

I think it’s important to be kind and respectful while discussing this. While I agree with you it’s important to feedback that I think the word ‘gunk’ might be offensive to women who have invested a lot of time and money into this form of expression.

thanks for posting btw! ☺️

Poppingmad123 · 20/07/2023 21:00

I quite like how lovely the female presenters look. They look well groomed and I’ve never thought they’ve over done it. At least not on tv. In person, the makeup might look very heavy. What I can’t stand is when anyones face, male or female, look very fake with injected lips and tight plastic faces! Bright white fake teeth etc. That to me looks so unnatural. A full face of makeup with wrinkles, droopy eyelids, laughter lines etc is all fine and realistic. Nothing wrong with making the best of what you have.

I work in tv. Not all of the women have garrish coloursb of make up on when presenting.
Some have very neutral tones, just like the men.

However, in TV, a woman without obvious make up (even if its just mascara) looks seriously ill!

Also, they wear make up even when not presenting.

Im pretty sure someone with your views about make up would not be presenting things on TV.

Wheretostartstitching · 20/07/2023 21:14

I am yet to meet a teenage girl who puts make up because they want to look like a news reader.

It’s incredibly sexist to say ‘A woman should do X because she owes it to all women to this’

It’s just another way to bully women into complying with your view of things. Not progressive at all.

Where I work is a male dominated industry, but I work for a fairly progressive employer and more than average are female. If I think about the females in the office they all do what they feel comfortable doing. Some wear non, some wear a bit, some go full out. Whilst I appreciate there’s an issue with women feeling like they must wear make up, the solution isn’t to degrade women who do wear it.

I think things have come a long way in the 25 years I have been working.

Lolly474747 · 20/07/2023 21:27

I doubt it has much impact, most young girls are more influenced but social media and reality stars than presenters.
plus if they did it would just be seen as tv job equals glamour rather than anything more.
It does concern me however the impact social media - influencers, reality tv stars have, but that's more about behaviour and real role models than wearing make up.

I used to wear a lot of make up when I was young as I got older I started to wear less it's natural

CatsForeverAndEver · 20/07/2023 21:28

@orangeleavesinautumn if you think this about makeup what do you think about women's clothes? After all they're linked to the same oppression you speak of.

I do hope you're never on a jury, with a female victim that indulges in the frivolity of makeup. Equally I hope you're not unkind to the students you speak of based upon their choices. It's not as black and white as you think, I work with victims of Sexual Assault and many who were abused young go on to wear makeup as a means to look older, move on from the victim they were and less of a target. Judgement from women like you can be so dangerous.

Blossomtoes · 20/07/2023 22:03

Going make up free definitely didn't harm the career of Orla Guerin or Kate Adie.

Except Kate Adie consistently wears make up - apart from when she was in a war zone.

Gingernan · 20/07/2023 22:18

I think mainly they look nice, I expect many of them enjoy being make up free when not working. I wear little make up, I think less is more attractive as you get older, moisturiser lipstick and perfume and I'm ready to go. No one sees me though , unlike the news ladies.

BagEndWoodlouse · 20/07/2023 22:19

Exactly - could not agree more!

BagEndWoodlouse · 20/07/2023 22:21

…with the comment about why women are being paid less than their male counterparts to read the news being of more concern!🙇🏼‍♀️
