to think female newsreaders and presenters shouldn't wear make up

|I am absolutely sick of seeing men on TV with normal, natural looking faces, and the women sitting next to them with their faces smeared with gunk. Why can't women show normal, natural looking faces on TV too? What a horrendous disgusting message we are passing on to young girls. "You need to waste time and money smearing gunk on your face to be allowed to be seen in public"

Make up tyranny! 😂

tyranny

noun
cruel and oppressive government or rule via the medium of bronzer.

adriftinadenofvipers · 19/07/2023 22:29

@orangeleavesinautumn - "wildly judgemental and ignorant sarky comments about other people's lives" - is that not the premise of your entire goady thread?

adriftinadenofvipers · 19/07/2023 22:33

"make up tyranny" - seriously?

Mightn't it make more sense to direct your irrational ire at, you know, actual tyranny? Are you completely tone deaf?!!

SerafinasGoose · 19/07/2023 22:35

willWillSmithsmith · 19/07/2023 22:22

When I was recovering from my major op I was pressing the morphine button more than I should have and started hallucinating and feeling weird, you’re not doing the same are you OP?

That is not remotely funny or clever.

SoupDragon · 19/07/2023 22:45

orangeleavesinautumn · 19/07/2023 22:18

Oppression on our culture is very real. This make up tyranny is one aspect of it. We need to clean up our own act before criticising anyone else

well, this just proves you're being deliberately ridiculous.

I was very ill (with cancer) and I can’t imagine me spending my precious time raging about bloody make up!

JulieHoney · 19/07/2023 09:07

Do you make it a habit to police women’s appearance?

This. Many women like wearing make up. It is their choice. If you choose not to wear it, that’s up to you, but it doesn’t make you better than people who do! A ‘horrendous, disgusting message’ might be your view (but I’d suggest it’s rather extreme- especially as you are sharing it like this), but it’s not everybody’s. I wear make up but my daughter isn’t interested in it.

RosaGallica · 20/07/2023 06:41

BarbaraofSeville · 19/07/2023 17:54

How many men think they need to put on make up to go shopping, to avoid 'terrifying children' or 'looking tired and pasty?

Almost none. But if course, women who wear makeup are doing it entirely by choice with no outside pressure or socialisation involved.

It just shows the level of thought involved doesn’t it? Women do not terrify children just with bare faces. Men terrify children with violence.

Hesma · 20/07/2023 06:45

I’m guessing women shouldn’t wear heels or bras or shave either in your ideal world? Leave them alone. I never wear make up but it’s their choice

RosaGallica · 20/07/2023 07:09

EmmaPaella · 19/07/2023 13:13

Interesting. Women were more repressed and more judged for their choices 100 years ago so wearing make up must surely overall be a sign of liberation, like wearing trousers was, and like men choosing to wear make-up is.

Anyway I disagree with the OP. I like the natural look but the opinion is a bit Gilead for me. And bad lighting is evil.

“Must”? “Surely”? How? Why? Is that the best you can do, it must be a sign of liberation? When has an emphasis on forcing a particular look ever been a sign of liberation? Are Iran’s morality police a sign of liberation?

As for this is nothing to get worked up about, of course having your life opportunities curtailed and chosen for you on the basis of your not having a dick is something to get worked up about! Women are routinely treated as past their best at very young ages now, while being forced to work for longer. I’ve seen older women in the media saying they would not get work now, they would never have been able to start work, because of the increasing emphasis on women’s looks, the increasing sexism and male chauvinism.

100 years ago was 1923. It was a time of change, with much improvement coming up for women. What improvements do you think are happening now, with the emphasis on appearance and fools internalising the increasing marketing we’re all surrounded by as their ‘choice’?

@toochesterdraws "Women (or anyone else for that matter) should be entirely free to choose whatever appearance of themselves they wish to present to the world."

Yes. Out of interest, do you think they are?

On the whole, yes, but I expect you'll come back and give me millions of examples when this is not the case.

CurlewKate · 20/07/2023 15:06

@toochesterdraws "

I'm just wondering whether you think that a woman could, without comment, appear on TV or in any other high profile role without makeup.

RosaGallica · 20/07/2023 06:41

Humour is an alien concept to some people, isn’t it @RosaGallica? Obviously I don’t literally terrify small children with my face bare but I terrify myself. My identity, after 50+ years of wearing make up is with my face done. Everyone who knows me would worry about my mental health if I suddenly stopped doing something that’s such a fundamental part of who I am.

BunnyBettChetwynd · 20/07/2023 16:48

Why can't women show normal, natural looking faces on TV too?
Why is a normal face better than one enhanced with make up. Poor men that they don't have the opportunity to wear make up with all the confidence and fun it brings. (disclaimer - I don't really feel sorry for men at all. Dear old Paul O'grady had more fun with make up that I ever will).

Is criticising make up just a route through which to criticise women and the things they enjoy? Like devaluing work purely because it's often the domain of women?

No man makes a woman wear make up. Women wear it because they want to for the confidence/fun reason. Millions of women choose not to wear it...it's not compulsory.

Make up is often the creation of women who make incredible careers and vast fortunes from it -
Estee Lauder, Helena Rubenstein, Elizabeth Arden, Charlotte Tilbury, Maria Kilgore, Anita Roddick, Bobbi Brown.

Yeah. Imagine what would happen if a high profile woman appeared anywhere without make up!

BunnyBettChetwynd · 20/07/2023 17:40

Do you think it would harm their career or reputation @CurlewKate ?

exaltedwombat · 20/07/2023 17:56

I'd be happy if women had the confidence not to hide behind makeup ANYWHERE. With exceptions for powdering out the glare of studio lights etc. I've never understood why just about everything else is blamed on patriarchy and the 'male gaze' but makeup is 'woman's choice'.

Hoppysue · 20/07/2023 17:57

How ridiculous…. I wouldn’t be seen by millions with no makeup on!!!!

Hoppysue · 20/07/2023 17:57

How ridiculous…. I wouldn’t be seen by millions with no makeup on!!!!

That's you
Many people, mostly men, would however not be bothered by makeup

Why do you think that is?

Birdcloud · 20/07/2023 18:14

I’m more concerned that , I think without exception, the women all wear high heels and pointy toes. Bunions will result!!

Alinino124 · 20/07/2023 18:31

That’s correct !!!

midgetastic · 20/07/2023 18:31

I thought it was back and spine problems rather than bunions which may be primarily hereditary

Pearls53 · 20/07/2023 18:40

I work in TV & both men & women wear make up .. with men it’s foundation & powder .. guests are also powdered. TV lights are incredibly hot, harsh & unforgiving so if there was no make up you would either look washed out - or very shiny. Many presenters also do long hours on canera so make up has to have staying power

FancifulFeathers · 20/07/2023 18:42

I don’t think the young girls that you’re concerned about will be watching the news tbh.
id be more bothered about programmes such as love island
