What age did you start getting quite a lot of grey hairs? Mine look very noticeable now at 38

It's almost like I've had a T bar of highlights but they are grey and not blonde. I don't mind it but wonder if I will get fed up of it soon. My natural colour is very dark so it's weird to me to have lighter coloured hairs growing, so it's novel!

What age were you when you had a noticeable amount of grey? Did you embrace it?

If not what are the best ways to colour it to cover it without a whole head dye?

I used to go very blonde in my youth by keeping a full head of highlights but don't have the interest or energy for that anymore.

Can you get dark lowlights painted over they greys, is that a thing?

One of my Aunts started going grey in her late teens. Both sides of the family have gone grey early.

FuppingEll · 18/07/2023 19:12

I'm 37 and just this afternoon looked in the mirror and went shit that's a lot of grey. I've had some grey since I was around 30 I think? My sister is the same so I am presuming it is just genes.

BitterAndOnlySlightlyTwisted · 18/07/2023 19:13

I’m a blonde and started noticing I was greying at the temples about a decade ago. I’m 68 now and haven’t bothered with colouring, I’m just going with the flow. It might be a completely different story if I was dark-haired

headcheffer · 18/07/2023 19:14

I'm 36 and I've two grey hairs. They're noticeably thicker and more wavy so I'm hoping I'll have thick wavy hair when it's all grey - currently it's thin and straight!

Fairislefandango · 18/07/2023 19:14

I'm 51 and still only have relatively few grey hairs. I have a few highlights, but they are to give a bit of a lift to my mousy, fine, poker-straight hair rather than to cover greys!

Delatron · 18/07/2023 19:16

It’s genetic but can skip generations- my grandma went grey around 40 but my Mum has no grey at 72. I don’t have any yet at 47.

bonfirebash · 18/07/2023 19:16

None yet (39 and red hair)

evtheria · 18/07/2023 19:16

I'm 35 and have white ones, not grey, scattered all throughout my hair but especially around the temples. You wouldn't notice unless you were stood within 1m of me. They started randomly appearing about 3-5 years ago 😩 and my hairs naturally black/dark brown!

CandyLeBonBon · 18/07/2023 19:18

I'm a redhead and have a few stray ones at the front which apparently only I can see and look blond-ish anyway. My ginger has faded a little bit but still pretty red and no signs of grey anywhere else. I'm 54 on Sunday.

Toddlerteaplease · 18/07/2023 19:18

41 and not a single grey!

DramaAlpaca · 18/07/2023 19:24

None yet. I'm 59. My DM only has a handful and she's 87. Her mother didn't go grey either. All of us are/were dark blonde.

FedUpWithEverything123 · 18/07/2023 19:40
  1. Runs in my family. Highly annoying
Tarantella6 · 18/07/2023 19:47

I'm 38. I've had half a head of highlights for 10 years and I wasn't grey at all when I started but now I am pretty sure I am noticeably grey underneath it all. No-one seems to notice my roots yet though!

HernamewasMary · 18/07/2023 19:52

My hairdresser says that young people are paying big money to achieve white hair. Think on.

Anonymousbosch39 · 18/07/2023 19:58

My first grey hairs came through when I was about 20, I remember because a colleague at the time noticed them at work and pulled them out at work! Now 40 and they are coming thick and fast. I dye my hair every 5 weeks but the greys regrow quicker than I can redye them.
Feel like shaving it all off and letting it grow through naturally.

SummerWillow · 18/07/2023 19:59

Redhead: 56 and no greys or whites yet!

I found my first at 17 and have the t bar now at 37 I hate it! So expensive to constantly dye!

BearsBeatsBattlestarGalactica · 18/07/2023 20:08

I’ve had greys ever since I can remember as a little girl but that’s because I have vitiligo and those hair follicles don’t produce any pigment but now (27) I have a lot more greys which I’m sure is just due to ageing

Flymetothetoon · 18/07/2023 20:11

It's down to genetics- I first noticed greys on my honeymoon at 26 , my DD had noticeable greys at 20 . I now have a glorious silver mane and love it 😊

MsSquiz · 18/07/2023 20:12

I'd been dyeing my hair a red/brown for years in my 20s and once I went longer than usual and spotted some rogue greys. I told my DM and she said she had also gone grey in her mid 20s! She'd never mentioned it and I'd never noticed as she'd also always dyed her hair a red colour.

So, I was in my 20s and I have dark brown hair so they're very noticeable when not dyed. I keep considering just going grey, but I haven't been brave enough yet

goingtohellinahandcart · 18/07/2023 20:17

Started getting the odd grey hair at about 49, now 52 and still only have an odd one here and there, I seem to be taking after my df who at 80 still has darkish grey hair(he had jet black hair)

BettyOBarley · 18/07/2023 20:20

I found my first one the other day at 43.
Can't see any more just yet!

PortLouisLouis · 18/07/2023 20:21

Timely thread for me! I noticed the odd white hair in my early 30s, but between then and now (43) they were so few and far between that I didn’t really think about them. In the last year you could see a streak if I wore my hair up a certain way.

Then, in just the last month the streak has become just about noticeable however I wear my hair and very distinct if I put it up.

My hairbrush always has some white hairs in it too these days.

Mistymist · 18/07/2023 20:22

Between 36 and 40. My mom was half grey in her early 20s.

ALLiDOisWIN · 18/07/2023 20:22

I was 31, had occasional greys here and there before but not much. My child was diagnosed with a serious medical condition. I was so stressed and worried I went grey almost overnight.
