What age did you start getting quite a lot of grey hairs? Mine look very noticeable now at 38

It's almost like I've had a T bar of highlights but they are grey and not blonde. I don't mind it but wonder if I will get fed up of it soon. My natural colour is very dark so it's weird to me to have lighter coloured hairs growing, so it's novel!

What age were you when you had a noticeable amount of grey? Did you embrace it?

If not what are the best ways to colour it to cover it without a whole head dye?

I used to go very blonde in my youth by keeping a full head of highlights but don't have the interest or energy for that anymore.

Can you get dark lowlights painted over they greys, is that a thing?

I'm 59 and I have 2 (unless there are some round the back that I can't see). My mum doesn't look noticeably grey in the photos from her 80th birthday but there were plenty close up.

However I am going bald. I'd prefer to just go grey.

OrangeVelour · 18/07/2023 17:38

In my mid 20's. I'm completely grey now, but I love it. I'm 53 and stopped dying it about three years ago.

Mumoftwoinprimary · 18/07/2023 17:39

I have fair hair so no visible grey yet. According to my mum (who is also fair), one day I will go to bed with no grey and wake up the next morning with grey hair as the predominant colour. Currently 43 so hopefully have a few years yet!

MavisMcMinty · 18/07/2023 17:40

I was about 40 when I noticed the first few greys at my temples, and thought “oh here we go”, having already decided I was far too lazy to go down the hair-dyeing route - all that maintenance and expense. But now, 20 years later, I still have very few grey hairs, people assume I must dye it, although if I was going to dye it I’d dye it a better colour than dark brown.

thanksamillion · 18/07/2023 17:41

First noticed some in early twenties. Now 45 and grew out the colour over the last two years. My hair was naturally very dark (almost black) and I was having to cover the roots every couple of weeks. I like the colour now but people find it very hard to place your age because it's still relatively unusual to have grey hair in your forties.

I’ve found blondes tend to slowly imperceptibly fade to grey, it seems much less obvious than on brunettes or redheads.

Thislife1 · 18/07/2023 17:41

I have a few white hairs around my hairline at 43. I got my first one a couple of years ago - I blame lockdown!

WonkyBricks · 18/07/2023 17:42

I'm mid 30s and I'm starting to notice more and more grey hairs, although I started getting the odd few in my late twenties. I reckon another year and I'll need to dye it. Until now I've just used a seni permanent box dye as and when I could be bothered. My mum went grey in her forties so looks like I'll be the same!

honeyfox · 18/07/2023 17:42

Probably started to have to get my roots done about 37-38, I'm 45 now and would be fluorescent white if I didn't do them.

Two of my aunts have the same kind of hair and only stopped dyeing it in the last few years (in their late 70/early 80s). It looks gorgeous on them!

Gpnever · 18/07/2023 17:43

Loads since 30 ☹️☹️

Icanttellyouanything · 18/07/2023 17:43

Hardly any and I'm 60. Started getting a few around my temples 2-3 years ago. People assume it's dyed. I've had questions about where I go and what colour I use. Mum is nearly 80, dyed blonde but if she leaves it too long the roots are still quite dark.

DappledThings · 18/07/2023 17:44

Started about 25. Now 44 and probably about a third grey. Never dyed it, can't be arsed. I think it looks fine.

FrivolousTreeDuck · 18/07/2023 17:45

I was about 10 years younger than you when my greys started flourishing. I'd had the odd one since I was about 20.

I've always dyed them as mine are very uneven, in patches rather than the overall 'salt and pepper' look which has a nicer and tidier appearance.

DinnaeFashYersel · 18/07/2023 17:45

49 and just starting to notice a few greys

SnacksToTheMax · 18/07/2023 17:47

21… I’m fully silver grey now at 42, and have been since at least 35 (when I stopped dying it).

FinallyLeavingDenver · 18/07/2023 17:49

Noticeable from late 30s but my hair is very dark so it shows more. My friend is a hairdresser so she sorts it.

My partner is blonde, you have to look closely for his grey hairs but they’ve been there since about late 30s too.

Spanielsarepainless · 18/07/2023 17:50

I had a few in my temples from 14. Now 60 and I look blonde!

madeinmanc · 18/07/2023 17:52

Early 40s during first lockdown, I'm sure the pandemic had an effect 😒I mean it would have happened anyway but I'm sure it was speeded up.

BlairWaldorfOG · 18/07/2023 17:52

18 😭😂

ReignOfError · 18/07/2023 17:54

63, and I was fully grey by 64. I was very pale blonde and now am a surprisingly nice silver - surprising because I thought I’d end up with salt and pepper splotches.

My closest friend was totally grey in her mid-twenties, and has never seen her natural colour since. She was shocked to discover, during lockdown and in her mid-50s, that she now has white hair.

Moonlightdust · 18/07/2023 17:54

I noticed the odd one in my 20s 😬 Now approaching 40 and have white/grey hairs mostly around my hairline. I always say it’s the stress of kids and a husband.

Backstreets · 18/07/2023 17:55

Nothing yet at 40. A friend and a relative both went full on grey in their twenties. Genes hey.

I’ll probably dye when they start coming in :/

WeightoftheWorld · 18/07/2023 17:55

About 27 ish, sadly. I'm touching 30 and I have grey highlights.

h3ll0o · 18/07/2023 18:00

38 here too. I’ve had one hairdresser advise individual highlights on the grey hairs as they won’t be as noticeable when they start to grow out. Another explained she could put a gloss over my hair.

aintnothinbutagstring · 18/07/2023 18:01

I'm same age and have a fair amount but my natural colour is light ash brown so it's not hugely noticeable - the grey that's coming in is white/golden. I've been growing out my natural colour for 10months - used to get highlights but it was terrible for my hair (probably not helped in that I love my hairdryer!)
