What age did you start getting quite a lot of grey hairs? Mine look very noticeable now at 38

It's almost like I've had a T bar of highlights but they are grey and not blonde. I don't mind it but wonder if I will get fed up of it soon. My natural colour is very dark so it's weird to me to have lighter coloured hairs growing, so it's novel!

What age were you when you had a noticeable amount of grey? Did you embrace it?

If not what are the best ways to colour it to cover it without a whole head dye?

I used to go very blonde in my youth by keeping a full head of highlights but don't have the interest or energy for that anymore.

Can you get dark lowlights painted over they greys, is that a thing?

I was 19! Genetic. My mum was the same.

ReleasetheCrackHen · 18/07/2023 18:05

I’m late. The saying is 50% of your hair will be grey by age 50.
Im past that and have maybe 10 grey hairs total? Rest is dark.
People assume I dye my hair, but I don’t.

My mum went grey in her 20s. My Nan never went grey (passed away at age 82) she had dementia and her carer confirmed she hadn’t been dying her hair even though I sort of assumed she did.

pastatriangles · 18/07/2023 18:06

30

dressedforcomfort · 18/07/2023 18:07

49, just starting to notice a few coming in around my ears. Not widespread yet. My Dad was totally grey at 45 and my Mum barely had a grey hair at 70. My guess is I'll fall somewhere in the middle.

afaloren · 18/07/2023 18:14

42 and I have maybe three grey hairs. I’ve got my nan’s auburn hair (everyone else in the family is blonde) and she only ever had a few greys.

usernother · 18/07/2023 18:19

In my 20's. My children are the same. I had blonde highlights for years then a full head colour until I grew it out in my late 50's. Now my hair is white.

soupmaker · 18/07/2023 18:21

In my early 30s. It was just a sprinkling. Then I had children. Went from dark hair to grey hair in short order! I love my grey hair. I'm now completely silver.

katherinexix · 18/07/2023 18:28

I have quite a lot of grey hair in my roots (I dye my hair black) and I'm 28.
My brother went completely grey at about 20.
It's definitely genetic, I have several family members who went grey young

mondaytosunday · 18/07/2023 18:28
  1. At 21 hairdresser said she never seen so much grey in one so young. Thanks Dad. And thank you L'Oréal.
dingotoo · 18/07/2023 18:29

I had a couple at 16.

YukoandHiro · 18/07/2023 18:29

Mine started in earnest about 36. I'm now 41 and dying doesn't cut it anymore. The re growth stripe is too noticeable and ageing. I'm moving to highlights and seeing how that goes....

CMOTDibbler · 18/07/2023 18:32

I was 19 when I first had a grey, 28 when I needed to use permanent dye to cover the grey rather than semi, and 38 when I gave up dying as I had so much grey. I'm 50 and silver/white

Nottodaty · 18/07/2023 18:35

I was about the same age when they arrived and noticeable. I’m now 45 and I have lots! Though I do dye my hair regularly as I don’t rock the grey look! At some point I guess I will need to start going blonder (I was blonde through my 20s) but it’s the maintenance of it why I stopped originally.

My friend was pretty much grey mid 30’s and she is now 47 and very very grey! She has now short hair with blonde highlights, which is strange as I’ve always known her with dark long brown hair!

waitingondr · 18/07/2023 18:37

First grey hairs appeared when I was 13! I started using semi-perms as an older teenager, moved to permanent dye soon after and stopped when i was 44 during lockdown. It's 80 % white and looks silver. Lots of friends have said they'd let theirs go if it looked like mine, but I love the different greys out there - especially the big steaks. I do miss my shiny dark hair too though, but it didn't go with my skin tone now and it was high maintenance.

LakieLady · 18/07/2023 18:42

A schoolfriend spotted a grey hair on my head when I was 16 (during a lesson, and we both got bollocked because we were whispering about it!).

It first became really noticeable around my mid-late twenties. In my early 30s, I had highlights to disguise the grey and at around 50, I had it coloured all over, and still do.

I'm 67 now, and it's still not completely grey. At the back, it's more "salt and pepper". I'm gutted really, I thought I was going to be like my DF, who had a wonderful head of snow-white hair at 50. It looked stunning, and sparkled in the sun.

If my hair was like my dear old pa's, I'd leave it uncoloured.

PipinwasAuntieMabelsdog · 18/07/2023 18:42

I think there is something in the link with stress. When I did my A levels 5 appeared, then fell out and reappeared during my finals, then my PhD stole my youth! Grin I had really dark hair so it was very noticeable. My sister has the same colouring and is 4 y older than me and has none. She absolutely does not dye her hair cow Grin

SquashPenguin · 18/07/2023 18:49

I had a lot of grey by 19. Never bothered me, I’ve always dyed my hair.

Around 36 started noticing the odd one. 38 now and luckily still only the odd grey, yet get told I look late teens/early twenties still which is going to look really odd if I continue to get more greys but still look like a kid facially.

Simonjt · 18/07/2023 18:52

I started going grey in my mid twenties, I’m not mid thirties and I would say I’m around 1/3 grey, luckily my grey hairs so far have the same texture as my black hairs. Poundland Tan France really.

TheChosenTwo · 18/07/2023 18:56

I’m 38 too, I get 3 grey hairs in one area which I just pull out 😂
I dye my hair but not because of grey, just because the colour is more interesting than my natural brown.
My dd has a weird recurring grey hair from being a toddler, just the one - she’s 19 now and it still exists, one lonely grey straggler!

Dalekjastninerels · 18/07/2023 18:58

24 ; am 52 now and it's at the front only (think Cruella) I get my colours done at hairdressers and use a root spray in between.

CRbear · 18/07/2023 18:58

33 here and I have decided to stop dying and it’s extremely noticeable! First greys around 23.

ArcticBells · 18/07/2023 19:01
  1. Highlights until age 34 then all over tint. Still tinting at 61. Will go white when I retire.
ManchesterLu · 18/07/2023 19:07

Our family have rubbish genes for grey hair. My brother was completely grey at 14. I got my first grey at 18 and now at 32 it's noticeable and I am dyeing it (I'm blonde, so I got away with quite a lot at first).
