What age did you start getting quite a lot of grey hairs? Mine look very noticeable now at 38

It's almost like I've had a T bar of highlights but they are grey and not blonde. I don't mind it but wonder if I will get fed up of it soon. My natural colour is very dark so it's weird to me to have lighter coloured hairs growing, so it's novel!

What age were you when you had a noticeable amount of grey? Did you embrace it?

If not what are the best ways to colour it to cover it without a whole head dye?

I used to go very blonde in my youth by keeping a full head of highlights but don't have the interest or energy for that anymore.

Can you get dark lowlights painted over they greys, is that a thing?

At 16 years old. By late 30’s grey with root touch up required every 3-4 weeks. Now late 40’s tickling 50 and totally white.
my parents were both very grey by their early 30s so I didn’t stand a chance. It is so expensive!

CirreltheSquirrel · 18/07/2023 20:26

45 and no grey yet. I have pretty dark hair. My OH is 4 years younger than me and much greyer!

alittlequinnie · 18/07/2023 20:30

I'm so jealous of everybody my age with none!

When I was 15 I went through my hair and pulled out all the grey ones - there was quite a handful! I left it alone until I was about 23 and then people would really comment on the amount of grey.

I started dying it about that age - semi permanent - but by 27/28 was dying it with box dye - permanent.

By 34/35 those box dyes wouldn't touch it so started having it professionally done. Had to re-touch roots myself every other Saturday.

Cost a bomb and in Dec 2020 I decided that was it and at 51 let it grow out.

I'm 52 now and it is totally grown out - pretty white really.

I'm still not sure if I like it myself but it's been such a long road - 50% of people tell me it's amazing and the other 50% don't comment so I just assume they don't like it!

My daugher's 35 now and she's got about as many as I had at 15!

PimpMyFridge · 18/07/2023 20:32

My DH 48 is more grey than my dad 76. 🤣

So far I'm taking after my dad which I'm quite happy about as my mum was steel grey by early 40's so I'd be there now, mum is now snow white (though at mid 70's that's hardly surprising), she dyed it for years and it cost her thousands and I don't want that (who does!)

Oblomov23 · 18/07/2023 20:33

None at 50, so far.....

lovemycbf · 18/07/2023 21:47

None yet and nearly 48 (red hair) have been growing out highlights the last 9 months or so but can't see grey hair yet .I'm sure they will arrive though

Siameasy · 18/07/2023 21:49

I’m in my late 40s and stopped dyeing my hair this year. I’ve now noticed a lot of greys at the front. I really like them as they look like highlights! I joined some grey groups on FB.

Life0fBrian · 18/07/2023 21:55

You’re not premature, most women start finding them mid thirties, but we’re conditioned to cover them up. There’s a whole movement called silver sisters which seeks to normalise and accept silvers. I’m the same age as you, and I’ve decided to stop dyeing mine and let it be, after dyeing it for over 20 years and the last 5 specifically to cover up the silvers. I’m over battling them, and I’m embracing them. If you look up the #silversisters on IG you’ll find masses of women embracing it and there are Facebook groups too. Vive La revolution 😉

LobsterCrab · 18/07/2023 21:56

I started dyeing mine at 40.

User68253 · 18/07/2023 21:59

I haven't had any yet at 37, I often wonder if hair colour make any difference? My mum had her first at 19.

Life0fBrian · 18/07/2023 22:01

(I found my first in my 20s, it’s genetic in my case)

dontgobaconmyheart · 18/07/2023 22:01

I'm mid thirties and no meaningful grey yet. I get the odd single white hair that always seems to regrow but nothing else and nothing at the roots. I do think it's just genetics really and it is what it is. When my greys come in I'll see how I feel and make a decision then about whether I'd want to dye my hair (have never dyed it in my life)

Windowcleaning · 18/07/2023 22:02

I'm 53 and have a few. I've got a few friends who grew out their colour during lockdown and have now embraced the grey and silver and look great.

The advice with grey hair is to dye lighter rather than darker, otherwise regrowth is really noticeable. My colleague has mid-brown hair and lots of grey (she's younger than you OP) and has blonde and brown highlights in long hair, which look lovely but quite £££ to maintain.

BatheInTheLight · 18/07/2023 22:06

My wife has a fair amount of grey and she's late 30's. She won't dye it as she hates the skunk strip look when it regrows. Plus chemicals.

To be honest, I don't notice it AT ALL. I'm looking at her face, her eyes, her smile.

We've both lost people we know in their teens and 20's who never had the chance to live long enough to see any grey hairs.

FabFitFifties · 18/07/2023 22:08

Starting to notice more now - 54. I'm very dark so even 1 is obvious.

LadyJ2023 · 18/07/2023 22:15

32 and I'm not 38 loads if I don't dye which I cant often

It's all down to pesky genes, unfortunately.

I was 31 when I noticed my first grey hair. I plucked that sucker out as soon as possible.

I'm 36 now and have a few more scattered around. It's not too noticeable because they're just scattered randomly about but not in like a stripe. Just the odd hair here and there. Probably got about 10ish grey hairs now.

My mam was full grey by the time she was 29. So, I grew up with the assumption that I'd be the same way. So, in that, I'm lucky.

My dad who is nearly 69 has still retained most of his hair colour so maybe I'll be a mix between the two. Who knows?

I really want a Cruella de Vil stripe though.

FelicityFlops · 18/07/2023 22:24

Mine come and go. I had my first white hair at 15. when I was under a lot of stress. I am now nearly 65 and, although I have seen a few white ones, most people would not.

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 18/07/2023 23:11

I turned 40 in October and have really only started to notice I'm getting a few more greys. I've had a few in the lengths of my hair that look like tinsel (!) but I've started getting a few in my parting.

I pull them out Grin

Sarahzb · 18/07/2023 23:23

Predicated on your genes I suspect. I 66 still have quite a lot of blonde Dad lost his about 70 ish. Mum dark hair, went gray early. Some dyes are not nice though. Test your scalp with a little to see if you have reaction.

GettingStuffed · 18/07/2023 23:42

I'm 59 and I'm only just going grey to the point it's noticeable.

dizzydizzydizzy · 19/07/2023 00:00

Mid 50s. I think I've got the very odd grey strand but you have to look hard to find one.

QueenMegan · 19/07/2023 00:05

50s and only a few at my temples. My mum never went grey.
I think I'll go pink or purple

TiredMum30 · 19/07/2023 00:07

I'm 39 and have quite a lot, I've been pulling them out for a few years, my hair is a dark so I feel that they're very noticeable 🙈

Gooseysgirl · 19/07/2023 00:13

I'm 47 and have just a handful of white hairs that are not visible. My brother went grey in his early 30s, sister gradually going grey since late 30s, mother went grey at 18, father had a full head of dark hair until he became ill in his 50s. I definitely got the non-greying gene from my dad's side of the family!!
