Short hair

Does anybody feel that they don't see many women with short hair? Particularly younger women. I can think of 2 females out of many who've got a pixie cut, but the vast majority of women I know have at least a long bob.
I currently have a short bob, but I just find it bland, flat and uninspiring.
I'm thinking of going for a pixie cut, I know it's just hair and will grow back. Men often seem to prefer longer hair, not all but generally, I guess it's associated with being 'feminine'.

My 16 year old DD has short hair, but she has an alternative look anyway. I know several girls of similar age with short hair, but all alternative types, the majority have generic long straight hair.

I have a bob, but thats because I have fine fair hair that doesn't really grow past my shoulders without serious breakage (except when pregnant, i had amazing hair then!). It looks much healthier shorter. I don't think it makes me look older, I look old because I am! Wearing my hair down my back isn't going to magically make me look 10 years younger!

One thing I have noticed about many of women my age with long hair is they wear it tied up in a messy bun all the time, so may as well be short anyway.

I have had short hair for 25 years, the thought of spending hours drying, straightening and styling long hair horrifies me. I wash mine, towel dry it, comb it through and stick on some gel .... done

I've always found short hair far more work than long hair. My hair is currently long and my daily routine is to brush it. Then either leave it down or tie it up. I wash it every 7-10 days, mostly just towel dry it and cut it myself 2-3 times a year. When I've had short hair it more often than not stands up in the wrong places in the morning and needs to be washed and/or styled every day. You have to use gel. Long hair can just be tied up if it won't sit right. I'll never cut my hair too short to tie up again.

It’s not shit. In the 80s there were many hair trends - Diana cuts, wedge cuts, big hair, bubble perms, bobs straight or curly, but the long hair trend has been in for about 20 years now and it’s getting boring.

Yeah and we all looked a right fucking state! Just because lots of girls have long hair it doesn't make them clones, it's just what's in fashion right now.

I think women with short hair look like young boys

I definitely looked like a man when I had a pixie cut. Everyone was encouraging me to get a pixie cut because I have high cheek bones and apparently that's all you need to carry it off. Nope 🙄.

Weirdly though I really suit my long hair in an up do, maybe because it's not so harsh? Who knows.

Actually I still have lots of photos, we didn’t look a state, I love looking back at how confident we all were to have our own styles.

Ha, I'm happy to leave my bubble perm in the past where it belongs!

One of my best friends has a short pixie style hair - she always had shorter style and is definitely rocking the grey style now. A mum at school has a fantastic short style it really suits her, she is stunning and not short of admirers. Though looks like a lot of effort to do all the styling.

i once had it cut short I looked like a boy (and when I look back at pictures I hate it) I then had a short bob dyed bright red waiting for it to regrow it!

Some people it really suits …me not being one of them.

I agree as a short haired women.

I don’t actually give a shit if men like it or not, my husband does like it though.

I have noticed (here and elsewhere online) that many women like to say men don’t like it. I even read somewhere that Damian Albarn must be gay because he dated Justine Frischmann who had short hair and was somewhat androgynous. I mean WTAF.

People really struggle don't they?

I pity the people so constrained by the desire to please men they can't think creatively about their hair.

mathanxiety · 11/07/2023 20:20

not Really it’s £22 a hair cut every 3 months

It costs far more than that where I live unless I go to some cheap chain where everybody who goes there gets basically the same cut.

And even if it were only £22, that's £88 I could spend on something else.

Lykkeli · 11/07/2023 20:29

People are determined to make out that short hair requires a ridiculous amount of money and time 😂 it does for some, not for others. Just like long hair does, that's about it really. Not everyone with long hair has it cut once every 3 years and just runs a comb through it and washes it once a week.

My hair is much more manageable long, I just find it easier to deal with as I can wash it, stick product in it and leave it. If it's short, I need to blowdry it, style it, fix it during the day. Shorter hair is much harder work!

I have short hair, I wash it, sometimes, not always, put leave-in conditioner on it, and leave it until the next wash - several days later. If it was longer I would have to do much more to it. Not all short hair requires the maintenance you mention - I don't even let the hairdresser blowdry my hair and it certainly doesn't require any styling or fixing during the day. Running my fingers through it now and again is the most it gets!

This is a fascinating thread.

I was on a bus today and there were a lot of women aged 65+ and almost without exception they all had short hair, mostly pixie cuts with a few so-called helmet head cuts.Except for one woman, probably in her 80s with long, wavy, silvery grey hair. I bet she's considered a rebel! So yes, like another op, I do associate pixie cuts with older women, the same as that shampoo-and-set style is associated with women in their 80s.

Mine has just been cut to shoulder length and I try to encourage the natural waves when drying it. No bob. I'd look awful with a pixie but I wouldn't want one!

Lykkeli · 11/07/2023 21:27

I work as a Care Assistant, have worked both in care homes and home care. Tonight I've looked after 2 ladies over 90 who still have very long and thick hair. 2 have pixie cuts, one has a chin length bob.

Sarah Beeny lost her hair due to cancer treatment. Thank heavens she's doing really well and has just auctioned off the wigs she wore to make money for charity. The wigs are all different from very short to very long. She posted up some pictures of herself before treatment with the heading, 'When I took my real hair for granted'.

The best thing about hair is that if we are lucky enough to have any we can do it how we like.

If you’re in the South West, that sounds like my mum 😀

I didn’t feel very feminine when I had my hair cut short. I find long hair has more options and is easy to tie back on busy mornings

BeverlyHa · 11/07/2023 22:01

Short hair was to be fantastic , I had it for ages , from teen to early 30s and then in covid, grew the whole thing down and now just tie it

Rainyday4321 · 11/07/2023 22:03

Have had short hair for about 15 years. Pixie cut style. It’s fab. Am also lucky that it suits me, and I like the fact that it is fairly distinctive.

Day to day it’s really low maintenance and practical and looks stylish and put together. expensive at the hairdressers though- esp now it needs dying too. I go religiously every 6 weeks…. If it’s short it has to be well cut and regularly cut.

HouseofHolbein · 11/07/2023 22:31

I always had short hair when o was younger. Then I developed curls so grew my hair but hated it as it was frizzy and shit and I generally wore it tied back.

Start of first lockdown I got the clippers and gave myself a grade 2 all over. Absolutely love it and have kept it the same ever since.

I love not having to think about my hair ever. Makes my life so much easier. It suits me people can't imagine me with hair now. Husband loves it because it makes me so happy.

Friend of mine with super curly/frizzy hair has just gone for a grade 2 and absolutely loves it. She's positively glowing since she had it done and wishes she'd done it years ago.

SpainToday · 12/07/2023 17:36

I tried so hard to like having short hair, but I feel more ‘me’ and more feminine when it’s a bit longer

ShakeYourFeathers · 12/07/2023 17:53

I know a couple of women with shorter hair including me

I would love to have longer hair but my hair is so fine it looks straggly really quickly and looks much healthier when short

Abracadabra12345 · 15/07/2023 07:47

I watched the Netflix documentary about Wham last night and, having read this thread, what really struck me was how the majority of teenage girls wore their hair short - and yes, some Princess Diana hairstyles there too!

Yes this. I do associate shorter hair with more mature women but it’s not being ageist, it’s simply because far more older women have short hair. Growing up, literally all the older women around me had very, very short hair. It was extremely rare to see an older woman with long hair. I’m not saying they ought to have had long hair as it’s completely up to them but when it’s all you see, you do tend to associate that style with a certain generation. That doesn’t mean younger women can’t or shouldn’t have short hair by any means but it IS a style predominantly preferred by that generation. I don’t quite understand why people are so enraged by that.

Yes, I think George himself had a Princess Diana hairstyle for a while 😂
