Short hair

Does anybody feel that they don't see many women with short hair? Particularly younger women. I can think of 2 females out of many who've got a pixie cut, but the vast majority of women I know have at least a long bob.
I currently have a short bob, but I just find it bland, flat and uninspiring.
I'm thinking of going for a pixie cut, I know it's just hair and will grow back. Men often seem to prefer longer hair, not all but generally, I guess it's associated with being 'feminine'.

I am a 35 year old woman and I recently cut my hair off and donated it to a wig maker. It was waist lenght, now it is very very short. Cutting it off was something I had planned to do for a long time, so it felt great! But also very odd, to have short hair, after having long hair for 15 years.
I like my new hair style, and I think short hair on women looks great! But I can understand that not everyone wants to have short hair. I also know quite a few men with long hair.

Definitely getting vile from some posts.

Can you use the quote button so we can see which ones?

You need to know what works for your own hair. I've thin scraggy hair and it grows really quickly but looks a million times healthier and thicker when it's well above my shoulders. Also a style that suited you in your twenties may not work as well in your forties so it's important to experiment with your hair every now and then

Have had short hair for 30 years. Love it. Can wash it twice a day. Feel dirty with long hair. It’s nasty.

It might look nasty on you but there are plenty of others out there with fantastic long hair.

catscatscurrantscurrants · 09/07/2023 22:36

I'd like to have long hair, but mine is very fine and limp and looks terrible any longer than jaw length. A pixie cut makes the most of the hair that I do have, and I'm pretty philosophical about it. Any man that thinks it makes me look less feminine can get stuffed!

My mum has always said that women over 40 should have short hair - every couple of years she would remind me of this 'rule' now she says it via my daughter!
Needless to say I have long hair!
At my school I can count in one hand the number of girls with short hair.

Yes, that was my mum.
It must have rubbed off on me because I've had short hair since I was 25.
I grew it briefly when I was 60 but ended up just tying it up all the time anyway. Then I had chemo for breast cancer and lost it. When it grew back in a short crop I remembered why I loved it short.

malarkeyisntmeasurable · 09/07/2023 23:19

I've had short, bleached hair since I was 15 (now early 30s) - it's always the first thing people compliment me on!

Anonymouseposter · 09/07/2023 23:27

Short hair is only flattering on people with elfin features, good cheekbones and a well shaped head. A lot of people need more softness.

DiscoDragon · 09/07/2023 23:36

My 11yr old has had her hair cut quite short and she absolutely loves it. She always hated having to brush her hair, it's pretty thick and curly and prone to tangles and just difficult to manage. It looks really nice on her.

I also have thick curly hair but really short styles don't suit me at all, I end up looking like a mushroom! I have mine in a bob just below chin length. I'd love to let it grow really long but once it starts getting past the shoulders it gets too much to look after and I get fed up with it.

Dontcallmescarface · 09/07/2023 23:55

I had long, thick, curly hair right up until I was 15, when I got the scissors and cut it all off. 40 years on and I've never let it get so much as shoulder length since. I hated my long hair with a passion.

I don't think that's necessarily true. By rights Kate Moss should suit a crop but when she tried it it didn't quite work.

My head looks like a potato. I need my long hair.

It costs a small fortune to keep short hair short. Long hair otoh you can often trim yourself. Or get your mother to do it using the kitchen shears Grin

Does it? I've not found that, just have a dry cut every 2-3 months.

KPops22 · 10/07/2023 00:57

In Scotland short hair is seen as an "auld wife's" haircut.

Mojoj · 10/07/2023 00:57

You need to have the right bone structure for short hair. It doesn't suit everyone.

10HailMarys · 10/07/2023 01:03

I’ve had short hair for years. I feel more feminine with short hair than I do with long hair because my face shape and features are more on the gamine side and that just gets lost when my hair’s long. I don’t give a single fuck what anyone thinks about it.

It’s interesting. There’s definitely a ‘it’s less feminine, men don’t like it. It makes you look older and older is bad’ vibe.

Considering also we’re in the gender defined era of boys like blue, cars and engineering and women like pink, makeup and dolls, it’s unsurprising but as always, disappointing.

MouseSculptureMadeOfOldHairbrushFluff · 10/07/2023 01:09

Helen Mirren recently had extensions put in and I think it really aged her compared to her signature shorter hair.

HonoriaLucastaDelagardie · 10/07/2023 01:30

longer hair just drags my face down.

That's what I find. And when it's longer, washing it takes longer, because of the need to make sure it's thoroughly rinsed.

Styling doesn't take any time, either a comb through or a few minutes with the hair dryer if I'm going out immediately.

Definitely an ageist vibe on this thread - 'short hair is for old people' - but then ageism is the norm on MN, isn't it?

Tyrionapproach · 10/07/2023 01:35

Depends on where you are in the country, I reckon, though pretty much every 20 to 40 ish woman I've encountered in the north west in the last year has poker straight hair down to the middle of their back. Once you're over 45 in the northwest you're apparently only allowed a regulation chin length bob, preferably dead straight, very very occasionally wavy, and dyed blonde. Go for a day out at any National Trust location or any city centre round here and you'd see exactly what I mean.

Avondale89 · 10/07/2023 01:48

The ageism and internalised misogyny in this thread is really quite something. I assume the people who think women with short hair look like boys also think that men with long hair look like girls? Do you also believe that women should only wear pink and men blue?

Yes, and age apparently = bad. For women anyway.

When my hair is long I don't do anything with it - just a quick wash and condition every few days. I can twist it up into a bun after washing and take it down later and it'll be lovely and wavy.

I recently had a shorter cut (not as short as yours by the sound of it) and had to get a round brush to style it whilst blow drying, and spray on stuff to stop the blow drying damage/fluffiness... Leaving it to dry naturally and/or sleeping on it resulted in odd bits of hair sticking out or curling oddly. So high maintenance, I'm glad it's starting to grow out!

I found the same. I had a pixie cut once - it needed constant care to keep it looking decent plus it cost me a fortune in cuts.

My current longer hair can be clipped up if it’s not behaving and only needs trimming every 3 months or so. Much less time and money.

Newnamehiwhodis · 10/07/2023 02:06

I hate my long hair - I feel so dragged down by it- and I don’t know why I’m so afraid to have it cut.
I the maintenance it would require is just not something I want to commit to. Not sure.

but who gives a shit what men do or do not find attractive? I don’t. I’m sick of attracting the horrid creatures.
