Short hair

Does anybody feel that they don't see many women with short hair? Particularly younger women. I can think of 2 females out of many who've got a pixie cut, but the vast majority of women I know have at least a long bob.
I currently have a short bob, but I just find it bland, flat and uninspiring.
I'm thinking of going for a pixie cut, I know it's just hair and will grow back. Men often seem to prefer longer hair, not all but generally, I guess it's associated with being 'feminine'.

I would never choose to have short hair. If god forbid something happened, I’d get a wig. If it’s not passed my shoulders, it’s too short. I’m late 20s

I have had short hair for 25 years, the thought of spending hours drying, straightening and styling long hair horrifies me. I wash mine, towel dry it, comb it through and stick on some gel .... done

Literally why I’ve always had long hair. Always thought short hair needed the drying, straightening and styling. Mine looks fine air dried and if it doesn’t it’s a 2 second twist up with a hair band.

swayingpalmtree · 09/07/2023 21:53

I think it’s very normal generationally for certain hairstyles to be popular.

I love my long hair and my nana always used to say to me, “why do girls your age always look the same?” I said to her, “same reason the women of your generation all have short, permed hair!” She had nothing to say to that because short wavy/permed hair was in fashion in the 40s/50s and most major starlets had that look. It’s just that long hair is currently in fashion now.

My daughter (16) has very short hair, but is definitely in the minority for her age group. So much so that she grew it out again for yr11 because everyone kept asking if she was trans!

She's comfortably back with a short style now that school is done and she's off to college. She's decided that college will be a more mature environment. Really hope she's right bit judging by some of the comments on here she'll be disappointed.

To be honest, it's quite depressing to see all these identikit teen girls. I'm not saying the 90s were incredible from a hair fashion point of view, but looking at my yr11 group photo vs my daughter's and there's a lot more variety in how the girls styled their hair and the different lengths everyone had.

I’m not sure college will be much different in that people might still think that, though they might not outright ask because they’ve matured a bit.

However I do think it’s a valid question because typically (today) shorter hairstyles are worn by those who don’t want to be seen as feminine.

I'm in Cornwall and there's plenty of young women with short hair

I'm noticing more brunettes too! I wonder if brown hair is back on trend or people cannot afford highlights anymore.

merryhouse · 09/07/2023 21:59

When I finally got round to having a pixie cut (age 44 - ten years ago now)

Every single woman I spoke to, without exception, said "I love your hair!"

Almost every single man, with one exception, said " - oh... do you like it?"

I realised why it's considered a lesbian cut!

(The honourable exception was my husband, who said "wow, that'll take some getting used to" - and three days later came out with "actually I really like your hair like that" Grin )

I've found it's really easy to deal with. I just pull it into place while it's wet and let it airdry. Days I don't wash it I give it a quick comb. When it gets so long I'm having to put it in a bobble for karate I go back to the hairdresser and try to remember what they said they did last time. Something about choppy layers, was it?

Still happy with the cut.

Not sure how you're reading 'vile' but obviously some people dislike it and others don't 🤷‍♂️

mondaytosunday · 09/07/2023 22:00

I always had short hair growing up. When I was about 13-14 short feathered layered hair was in. Went to my daughter's (18) Speech Day last week and every single girl, from Y7 to Upper Sixth, every one, had long hair, ranging from just below shoulders to waist length.

BalloonSlayer · 09/07/2023 22:01

In Victorian times the convention always was: long loose hair for the unmarried woman, as soon as she was married (or eligible for marriage according to Gone with the Wind), her hair was "put up."

In Dombey and Son by Charles Dickens, the second Mrs Dombey, is portrayed as a "wayward character" (ie being a normal woman!) by being constantly symbolised by her long uncontrolled hair.

By the 1940s/1950s (perhaps earlier?), practicality seemed to kick in and married women seemed to change to having their hair cut off as TBH hair constantly tied back might as well be short.

1960s fashion introduced the Mary Quant bob, then came the long-haired hippy look in the 1970s which then got driven out by Punk. (I remember we all called my sister a punk in 1979 because she had her hair cut an inch shorter than she had previously and bought a pair of straight-legged jeans and a cap-sleeved t-shirt. Anarchy in the Uk!!! Grin ) New romantics introduced a whole lot of new interesting hair styles for women.

Diana Spencer in 1981 had short hair (as did most of us at that time) and carried that fashion with her till 1997. She did try growing her hair from time to time but it never suited her like short hair did.

I remember my mum having a real go at another of my sisters, saying she was "too old for long hair." At 25. She still has long hair at 64 and looks great!

Not all women suit long straight hair, I wish women could try a variety of styles like we did in the 80s.

Definitely not from me. I absolutely love short hair and think it looks wonderful on other people - I just don't have the right sort of face for it. I can't think of anything more liberating and feminine than a pixie cut.

I don’t think anyone is saying it’s vile, just that they personally wouldn’t like it.

KimberleyClark · 09/07/2023 22:03

I have mine in a Bob that just touches the junction of my neck and shoulders. It’s really thick - menopause does not seem to have affected it. Wash, blow dry and straighten once a week, between washes it just needs a comb and occasional straightening. Get it cut and coloured every six weeks.

I think longhair needs to be in tip top condition or it can look a bit meh.

Lykkeli · 09/07/2023 22:04

Definitely getting vile from some posts.

Crimeismymiddlename · 09/07/2023 22:04

They all have long hair. I change my hair all the time but it suits me much better short. In the 90’s you could have short or long, and no one cared.
I do feel a bit sorry for the young women who would look so much better with it all chopped off into a bob but, unlike the nineties and naughties that had loads of cute fashionable short styles at the moment the only trendy short hair is the very hard to master wavy chin length cut and that’s it. Maybe it just doesn’t appeal.

Eh? No one said it’s “vile”. Just that it can make people look older which is true, because more older people tend to have short hair so you naturally associate it more with that age group.

Someone on this thread also said long hair is “nasty”, doesnt offend me in the slightest because I don’t agree so who cares? 🤷🏻‍♀️

MotherofGorgons · 09/07/2023 22:05

I love short hair. Always trying to persuade DD to cut her hair into a wavy bob- she has v delicate features-but apparently only trans and lesbian women have short hair these days! Mad.

BunnyBettChetwynd · 09/07/2023 22:07

I wish women could try a variety of styles like we did in the 80s.

I had a big bubble perm in the 80s. Now that's a style I wish I hadn't tried.

It costs a small fortune to keep short hair short. Long hair otoh you can often trim yourself. Or get your mother to do it using the kitchen shears Grin

Yes good point

oblada · 09/07/2023 22:08

It is definitely very noticeable in England.
But look towards European/Mediterranean countries and the trends are different. All the women in my family have short hair. My oldest also has short hair but my second daughter has mainly opted to keep her hair long.
I think it is down to culture and peer pressure.

swayingpalmtree · 09/07/2023 22:09

I don’t remember the 80s as being particularly varied- literally every girl I knew had a perm and it was the go to style in most films/tv

emmylousings · 09/07/2023 22:10

I've had mine long and short over the years. Agree that longer hair is less hassle and easier to style, as you just tie it back / up. Needs washing less often. Fewer trips to hairdresser, so lots to like...

Dinosauratemydaffodils · 09/07/2023 22:13

I have waist length curls atm. I would prefer short hair but all previous attempts have ended badly because of how curly it is. Currently I can let it air dry and go for the whole Pre-Raphaelite vibe, short I had to straighten it daily or get it cut very short very regularly.

realityhack · 09/07/2023 22:18

I don’t know why everyone keeps saying short hair is easier and low maintenance, it’s absolutely not!

When I had short hair, I was in the hairdressers every 6 weeks having it cut, I had to style it every day otherwise bits would stick up at angles from when I was sleeping etc.

I have longer hair now and it’s so much easier, I just wash it and leave it to dry naturally. Don’t have to keep going to the hairdressers either!
