Short hair

Does anybody feel that they don't see many women with short hair? Particularly younger women. I can think of 2 females out of many who've got a pixie cut, but the vast majority of women I know have at least a long bob.
I currently have a short bob, but I just find it bland, flat and uninspiring.
I'm thinking of going for a pixie cut, I know it's just hair and will grow back. Men often seem to prefer longer hair, not all but generally, I guess it's associated with being 'feminine'.

Lots of women my age (mid-40s) are starting to cut their hair short. The short bobs often look great. The pixie, cut in at the ears style has aged everyone of them by at least 10 years. It’s just not flattering on most people in my opinion.

You’re right- short hair is rarer in the younger generation.

My hair is bra strap length and I find it easier longer as you can just put it up in a pony or a bun type thing whereas if it was short I’d have to style it every day. I’m also tall with a roundish face so short hairstyles look bloody awful on me. I think pixies really suit those with delicate, elfin features and I just can’t pull it off which is why I’ve never gone that short.

If you have a nice shaped head go for it

I totally agree with this. Pixies certainly don’t suit everyone and it has aged the people I know who have had one in their 40s/50s. I think it’s because it’s quite a “severe” look, so you need good features to soften it.

Yes, within, because hair often thins and goes dry and brittle during the menopause short hair is the easiest option. My DH hates short hair on women, so do most men I know. I keep mine shoulder length but it's not thick and shiny like it was 10 years ago pre menopause!

Mumtothreegirlies · 09/07/2023 21:21

each to their own but I personally don’t think short hair looks good on women. It can be aging and look quite masculine.
having said that some women look strikingly beautiful with a shaved head.

Jeansmuddy · 09/07/2023 21:22

I remember seeing a lot more short haired women when I was a child in the 90s compared to now. Thinking of the other mum's I see at the school gates, none have short hair though a few of the grans do.

I think short hair is quite ageing on many women who are 30+. Not that that's a negative thing as such, just most people won't want that.

I tried short hair in my late teens and found it a lot of work. I think it depends on your hair type which is easier.

ImthatBoleyngirl · 09/07/2023 21:22

I think in order to pull off short hair you have to have the right shape face and be attractive - don't shoot me 🙈 Most women look better with longer hair imo

I have had short hair for 25 years, the thought of spending hours drying, straightening and styling long hair horrifies me. I wash mine, towel dry it, comb it through and stick on some gel .... done

Interestingly this is one of the reasons I wouldn't have short hair. I brush mine before I get in the shower, wash it, shove it in a towel while I get dressed and then ignore it entirely.

I figure if I had short or fairly short hair I'd have to style it and also get it cut regularly - with long hair I just beg a friend to take a pair of scissors to the bottom 2x a year.

Have had short hair for 30 years. Love it. Can wash it twice a day. Feel dirty with long hair. It’s nasty.

I have a pixie cut and feel this way too. Also when I had long hair it only looked nice if I spent a lot of time on it because my hair is dry and fine without any natural wave. With my pixie cut it takes no time at all to dry and style.

I've had tons of compliments since I cut my hair but honestly even if it didn't look that great I'd still keep.it short now for the convenience and the feeling. But that may be partly due to my life stage - I'm 50 now and don't care much whether I look pretty or not anymore.

Paperbagsaremine · 09/07/2023 21:27

Haircuts seem out of fashion with younger women, aside from the blue haired plaid shirt kids.

Presumably at some point the fashion will swing back, though we may never see frosted perms again... or will we?!

Archymum · 09/07/2023 21:28

I have a pixie (and I'm curly). Have been wearing a pixie for pulling up on 10 years. (I'm young). It is the #1 thing I get compliments on about my physical appearance. Long hair always swamped me and I felt like you couldn't even see my features. I hid behind my hair. I think you have to carry a pretty high degree of self confidence to go short, but equally, that confidence is palpable from the outside too, and it all feeds into itself. If you have good bone structure, especially high cheek bones and a good jaw line, there is nothing more flattering to a female face than a well-cut pixie.

But if you have nasty hair, I doubt the length is going to make much difference?

StoneofDestiny · 09/07/2023 21:33

Had a pixie cut more years than I can remember - so easy to look after but does require more regular cutting than longer hair to keep the style. So much cooler in summer!
Grew out during Covid as I couldn't get to the hairdresser - so have now tried a bob.
I keep feeling I've too much hair and fed up shoving it off my face in the slightest breeze or just a hot day!
Yes - very few young girls have short hair - but so many look the same!

NeelyOHara1 · 09/07/2023 21:34

I have such a generic middle bob, I keep looking on YouTube for cool short haircuts but can't seem to go for it.🙄

Whatthediddlyfeck · 09/07/2023 21:35

I have short hair just now because I lost 50% of it for a medical reason about a year ago. It’s coming back in now and is about 4-5” long all over and I absolutely HATE it. I’ve had long hair pretty much all my adult life and I just don’t feel like myself just now-I feel so exposed!

Long heir is a fashion thing like anything else-shirt hair was very fashionable in the late 1970s and the 80s. I often wonder if hairdressers these days will have the technical skills needed when short hair inevitably becomes fashionable again

KohlaParasaurus · 09/07/2023 21:35

One of my daughters, in her mid-twenties, has her hair cut to just a few millimetres all over. She has a lovely head shape and a delicate face and even her grandparents think she looks gorgeous. I wear my hair in a short bob (low maintenance, wash, comb and ignore) and I've never been able to grow it much longer than that without it looking straggly, but I'm contemplating having a buzz cut like my daughter's.

I wish!

I also agree. I don’t see many women who look genuinely good with very, very short hair. Sorry, just my opinion 🤔 To me, it’s a hairstyle that I associate with much older women

Bluevelvetsofa · 09/07/2023 21:44

I do think it’s mostly older women who have short hair. I do. I’d like it to be longer, but longer hair just drags my face down. My hairdresser agrees and he’s the one who suggested longer hair, until he realised it doesn’t suit me.

It takes about five minutes to style it and I dislike long, limp hair, or a massive topknot. Each to his own.

bellamountain · 09/07/2023 21:45

I was thinking this the other day (after I had my long hair cut into a bob). I now miss my long hair...!!! Everyone has long hair it seems, maybe it's a post covid thing. People got used to having longer hair and liked it. In the 90s, short hair was very in. My mum had a short hair style but she was a younger mum than I am and could pull it off. With the 90s fashions all in, the hairstyles haven't made a comeback.

bonzaitree · 09/07/2023 21:49

My bestie has short hair. It suits her. Her hair is a little thin (pcos) and looks thicker short.

I think she would have long hair if she could though!

It may not be a very PC thing to say , but it's been my experience too, looking around. I tried short hair once and it looked horrible. There is also this thing about "needing" to get hair cut short when you reach a certain age - when a longer, softer hairstyle is surely more important than ever?

Hair can do so much to soften and enhance a face - and the opposite is true too

MumofSpud · 09/07/2023 21:50

My mum has always said that women over 40 should have short hair - every couple of years she would remind me of this 'rule' now she says it via my daughter!
Needless to say I have long hair!
At my school I can count in one hand the number of girls with short hair.

BunnyBettChetwynd · 09/07/2023 21:52

At a point of desperation during lockdown I asked my husband to cut my hair. He's a gardener, not a hairdresser and it really showed. As soon as the hairdressers opened I went to get it sorted out and a pixie cut was the only method. I looked like Mo from Eastenders. It's shoulder length now and I will never have it short again.
