Short hair

Does anybody feel that they don't see many women with short hair? Particularly younger women. I can think of 2 females out of many who've got a pixie cut, but the vast majority of women I know have at least a long bob.
I currently have a short bob, but I just find it bland, flat and uninspiring.
I'm thinking of going for a pixie cut, I know it's just hair and will grow back. Men often seem to prefer longer hair, not all but generally, I guess it's associated with being 'feminine'.

Me too. I’d settle for Annie Lennox. My trouble is that I have a small head and I need hair to compensate.

MySunnyDay · 10/07/2023 17:47

I've always had short bobs and long layered pixie cuts (I'm early 50s). One thing I have started to find in the last 5 years is that lots of hairdressers just aren't experienced in how to cut short hair well to suit your hair type, head and face shape. I have to be really careful where I get my hair cut these days. I used to be able to walk into most good salons and have a positive experience but not so much these days. They can all do those balayage and long hair with the blunt ends cut though! I just don't think hairdressers are getting to cut short hair as much these days and so are not getting the experience as the trend is now definitely for long hair.

My mum has always said that women over 40 should have short hair - every couple of years she would remind me of this 'rule' now she says it via my daughter!
Needless to say I have long hair!
At my school I can count in one hand the number of girls with short hair.

My mother thinks that short hair is the best look on women of every age! She cut off her hair when she was 12, and she has had very short hair ever since.
She is SO happy now that my hair is short! (I cut it off recently, before that I had very long hair). I might keep my short hair for a while, and then perhaps grow it out again.
But I also have a friend with short hair, and her mother wants her daughter to have long hair.

Lots of lovely casual misogyny on here. I'll reverse some of those statements, for funsies.

Just my opinion, but I think women with long hair look pathetically feminine.

Long hair makes many women look as though they are trying to look younger than they are - but no one is fooled...

Women with long hair usually have weird shaped faces that they try to disguise with their hair.

Women with long hair, in my opinion, often go for longer periods of time without washing it, which is gross.

Yeah. Ugly isn't it?

Long hair now comes from looking glamorous and expensive whereas short hair is old lady hair that can’t be bothered. Its fascinating the conviction people have about womens hair but also how linked to societal values.

Until recently older women had perms and other short hair easy to manage styles, and the prevailing message was that long hair was "witchy" or otherwise unattractive over 35 or something ridiculous like that.

So having long hair as a mature woman could actually been seen as rebelling against the idea that you need sensible short hair as you get older. A lot of other women of my age I talk to with longer hair just find it easier to manage, as I do. It's not high maintenance or high glamour unless you want it to be.

This morning I had a shower then towel dried my long wavy hair and combed through some serum and left it - that's it. If it was a bob or shorter and I did that it would be stuck out like a sore thumb and look shit unless I straightened it or otherwise heat styled it.

Are you replying to me?

I’ve still got long hair. Never had anything shorter than shoulder length.

Part of the long hair thing is traditionally about being feminine although I’m not quite sure why. Very masculine men like Vikings, metal heads and some religions have long hair too.
But because of the contractions of sexuality of long hair, (along with high boobs, small waist etc etc) I think that’s where the idea of long hair on older women has been thought of as ageing . Whereas the reality is you can wear it many ways and it’s ageless.

EsmeSusanOgg · 10/07/2023 21:26

I hate my hair in a bob. Like a pixie cut, but my hair grows out too quickly. Long hair is less maintenance and it suits me.

EsmeSusanOgg · 10/07/2023 21:28

Though lots of folks have asked as a middle aged mum when am I cutting it short (mostly older generation). I am not.

Humidititties · 10/07/2023 21:28

Would love to see some pictures of your short hair, I'm 49 and seriously considering the chop from shoulder length hair

Have had short hair for 30 years. Love it. Can wash it twice a day. Feel dirty with long hair. It’s nasty.

Nasty? Get over yourself

It’s a personal feeling? I hate how long hair feels in me. What’s to get over? Odd comment.

Yours looks good. My hair is thick ish, natural wave but I have a round face. I'm fed up with the styling but I'm not sure short would suit

Looks fabulous.

pinklama · 10/07/2023 22:45

I have had short ‘pixie’ hair a couple of times- once when I was in school & then in my late twenties (and I was never short of male attention tbh).

uncomfortablydumb53 · 10/07/2023 22:51

I'm 58 and have never had long hair
I've had a soft pixie cut for 30 years as it suits me
The only thing I've changed is the colour

drpet49 · 10/07/2023 23:19

Short hair only really suits a very small number of woman. I’ve only ever recalled 2 people where short hair looked great on them.

Long hair most certainly doesn't suit everyone either. I think short hair is far more interesting and stylish. Long hair just hangs, or else is in a pontytail, and everyone ends up looking the same. I can't stand all this "short hair only suits a small number of people" nonsense. There was a time when the majority of women had short hair - I don't remember women looking so terrible then, but of course you have to get the right cut to suit you.

Lykkeli · 11/07/2023 00:16

It's almost as if everyone who doesn't have short hair is walking around with this absolutely amazing, beautiful long hair that suits them excellently, it's really not the case.

A lot of people have extensions too. (I think they must feel weird!)

I have had short hair for 25 years, the thought of spending hours drying, straightening and styling long hair horrifies me. I wash mine, towel dry it, comb it through and stick on some gel .... done

I probably do more styling when my hair is short.

I donate to the little princess trust so I spend 2-2.5 years growing my hair and then have the ponytail cut off.

I usually wash my hair, run a vent brush through it and leave it.

There are a lot of people walking around with short hair styles that don't suit them either, or they had them cut into a nice style but they can't keep up all the maintenance required.

ElizabethBest · 11/07/2023 11:06

My hair is much more manageable long, I just find it easier to deal with as I can wash it, stick product in it and leave it. If it's short, I need to blowdry it, style it, fix it during the day. Shorter hair is much harder work!

Pigstrotter · 11/07/2023 11:16

I’ve been thinking of a pixie cut too, but it does tend to be a thing for older people. Plus I can’t always tell the difference between a man & a woman due to the short grey cut, anorak, & trousers. There’s very few women who can carry it off I think. But it’s the bastard bob or a pixie. The young do tend to have extensions these days, rather than natural flowing locks.

Pixie cuts are definitely more popular with the over 40s.

Menopause does weird things to the hair so it makes sense and this is the reason I'm considering getting one.

I'm worried it'll age me but I might have to suck it up.

Wotwotwotwotwot · 11/07/2023 11:25

I've always had a short sharp bob but now I'm mid 40s I find it really aging so have grown my hair out. I loved my bob but long hair is so much more flattering these days
