Husband and Chinese take away

SeaSnakes1 · 27/06/2023 18:49

We all love a Chinese take away in our house - we have three teenagers. A couple of months ago my husband had to go gluten free. Chinese take away is limited in terms of gluten free options so he’s said he’d rather not bother- fair enough his choice.

He’s now said nobody else in the house can get one as it’s cruel. He adored the Cantonese chicken balls and chicken chow mien. I thought he was joking , but he’s not. He has seriously said that it’s totally unacceptable and unfair for anyone to get a Chinese take away.

AIBU?

He's being a knob. I had to go gluten-free about a month ago, coupled with already being a vegetarian it makes my diet rarely limited. I wouldn't dream of dictating what my family can eat. Regarding takeaways, we haven't had one since I've been GF, but we'd probably get separate takeaways to cater for everyone.

Iloveacurry · 27/06/2023 20:22

Does he ever go out? Have it then. But seriously, he’s being unreasonable!

Hollyppp · 27/06/2023 20:22

If you love your husband, don’t torture him.

Yeah I agree. I’m coeliac and I don’t enforce any rules by DH wouldn’t get a Chinese as he knows how sad I would be because I LOVE Chinese :(

pollymere · 27/06/2023 20:23

Oh... And get Ho Fun or Vermicelli noodles as these are gluten-free. Thai noodles are usually rice noodles too. I'm sure a kindly takeaway would do chow mein with rice noodles if you asked them...

Lacucuracha · 27/06/2023 20:26

Never give in to dickheads.

AuditAngel · 27/06/2023 20:26

Since my husband did not give up drinking when I was pregnant and breastfeeding his 3 children, I would tell him to think again.

That’s pathetic, get your DH a Chinese.

Meowandthen · 27/06/2023 20:26

What brattish behaviour. He needs to grow up.

crostini · 27/06/2023 20:27

You can't really trust Chinese to be gluten free.
My family members who are celiac wouldn't dictate what the rest of us could eat but equally if we're ordering food, we would want to get something everyone can eat confidently and enjoy. It's mean and thoughtless. I can't imagine leaving a family member out.
You can have it when he's not around.

FeelingwearyFeeelingsmall · 27/06/2023 20:27

Lol at this. I am disposed to high BP so eat a very low salt, low fat, low carb natural diet to keep it under control. DH has no such problem and can eat whatever he wants. He certainly doesn't have to eat what I do. I certainly feel the occasional pang of envy when he tucks into something I can no longer enjoy but I don't impose my rules on him.

cushioncovers · 27/06/2023 20:30

Wow he's a sore loser isn't he. He can't have some food items so nobody can have them. What a spoiled man child.

VDisappointing · 27/06/2023 20:30

I am celiac and get chinese - ask at another restaurant

SunnyFrost · 27/06/2023 20:31

Presumably he didn’t drink a drop of alcohol while you were pregnant with any of your three children?

MadCattery · 27/06/2023 20:31

A quick search on Chinese gluten free recipes brings up both cookbooks and individual recipes. Gluten free soy sauce is a thing! With three teens and two adults, make a family night of cooking together. The food will be healthier, you’ll know what’s in it, the kids will learn a skill and everyone wins.

SeaSnakes1 · 27/06/2023 19:01

We haven’t got a Chinese since he went GF. We don’t get one often, maybe every 2-3 months . We all just really fancy one lately

Why don't you take the kids out for one? It can't be nice for him but he's being unreasonable!

Speach · 27/06/2023 20:32

I have coeliac disease, I'd never expect anyone in my house to not eat something because I can't!!

Oblomov23 · 27/06/2023 20:38

Completely controlling. Totally unreasonable.

Gwlondon · 27/06/2023 20:41

I think rice is gluten free? Right?

Alargeoneplease89 · 27/06/2023 20:42

Just go out with the kids for a Chinese or have a t-away if he's out.

Without being flamed, he isnt going to die by eating it, yes its uncomfortable being intolerant but my DH makes the call if he's going to eat gluten on certain occasions and put up with the effects

Okshacky · 27/06/2023 20:42

Rice is gluten free but soy sauce isnt

lucya66 · 27/06/2023 19:07

If you love your husband, don’t torture him.

If the husband loves his family, he shouldnt torture them.
And denying a favourite takeaway is torture.

Like others one of my local Chinese places does all kinds of gluten free dishes.

Inertia · 27/06/2023 20:44

Your line about how he would respond is worrying.

While you were pregnant, did you ban all alcohol, soft cheese, pate etc from the house? Or does this control only go one way?

What a dick. I can't eat any solid food and am tube fed for life. I still go out for meals with friends and family. Should I suggest they can only eat ice cream in my company?

billy1966 · 27/06/2023 20:49

What a selfish twat.

This can't be in isolation?

Tell him to grow up and cop himself on.

I would get the complete ick.

Are you afraid of him? And his reaction?

If so, you have much bigger problems.
