Adam Kay and his husband’s babies

Apologies if this has already been covered.

I read in the paper this morning that AK and his DH have welcomed TWO babies into their lives, born to two different surrogates. One child is six months old and their sibling is two months old.

I genuinely cannot wrap my head around this. It seems so very odd to me. Is it a case of ‘one each’ or ‘get the baby stages over asap’?

Obviously nobody but the two parents can answer this but AIBU to find this really quite disturbing?

He also reportedly referred to ‘pregnant people’ (rather than ‘pregnant women’) on Desert Island Discs, horrible little misogynist that he is.

Clymene · 18/06/2023 19:20

@TeaKlaxon - that's absolutely not true.

RedToothBrush · 18/06/2023 19:21

TribeD · 18/06/2023 19:18

Same here. I'm from a medical family, and have friends in the 999 services, so I "get" that there is an element of black humour - a coping mechanism almost. But the show was awful, and the songs were beyond the pale.

He's a deeply unpleasant little man.

There's coping.

Then there's cashing in on others misfortune and using that kind of language in a public way.

It undermines the patient doctor relationship. It's actively harmful.

He clearly was unfit to practice with that level of disrespect.

Surrogacy is people trafficking anyway.

Yes it is,I can't believe some people are okay with it.

Whichwhatnow · 18/06/2023 19:22

TeaKlaxon · 18/06/2023 19:12

Both.

Those of us raising children who never knew their birth mother know that they are not damaged. And that it’s bloody ignorant and offensive to say they are.

FFS can you stop putting down other people's experiences? My husband is covered in self harm scars, sucks his thumb at the age of 39, has a comforter still, which he is convinced is because he didn't have that comfort or breastfeeding from his birth mother. Is desperate for his dad's approval. He's very messed up. And there is nothing in his biological background or upbringing that was an issue. It's literally losing his birth mother at birth. He still cries about it.

I'm happy your kids are happy (and I hope they continue to be - my husband's issues didn't fully emerge until his late teens) but please don't claim other people's experiences aren't real. It's offensive.

SunIsShininInTheSky · 18/06/2023 19:27

No idea who they are? Two men purchased some children, sad situation being taken from their mother (to the newborns the surrogate is their mother), no thoughts for the babies welfare, sad and shouldn't be allowed. Just because you can doesn't mean you should. I do hope laws are introduced to stop this.

You do know you can be disapproving without being outraged, right?

For the record I said in my not very long OP that I found it disturbing. Outraged was suggested by another poster who couldn’t fathom that this was disturbing. It’s not’just’ the fact that they paid for their babies but that they had 2, so close in age. It’s weird.

Anon9898 · 18/06/2023 19:29

I like adam Kay. He is very funny and I have read all his books. As far as I have read he dosent have a problem with women

Papernotplastic · 18/06/2023 19:29

thevery · 18/06/2023 18:02

Unsurprisingly someone who wrote about women with complete contempt in his book is now happy to exploit women's bodies for his own convenience.

This ^

The songs are almost 20yrs old. They were of their time. They were also really, really funny.

What else that people have said and others have found really funny do you give a free pass to? Or is it just repellent misogyny @IJustHadToLookHavingReadTheBook ? Why does what Adam Kay said and did mean he doesn't get flack when others have been hauled over the coals for things a lot older than 20 years, it was of it's time is not accepted as justification in those instances, why the double standard?

The Northern Girls song is really, really funny is it?

There's another thread on this.

Surrogacy is baby trafficking. They bought two. One was a difficult pregnancy.

And that's without considering how reprehensible this man is to begin with and how much he hates women.

Appalling individual who cashes in and exploits the misery of others.

This !

No - what’s offensive is describing any child as ‘completely damaged’.

Erm, I didn't actually quote you, I quoted another poster. I've actually being agreeing with you throughout this thread!

I mean, I'm a southerner. It did make me laugh at the time, yeah. It still raises a bit of a titter now. Doesn't mean it's right or true, just that it's objectively quite funny to hear those amusing lyrics over the tune to 'More than Words'. I also laughed at the lyric 'They're all lazy, fucking useless cunts' about London Underground train drivers, but I don't hate all TfL staff.

3BSHKATS · 18/06/2023 19:42

Also surely surrogates consent to doing so?

The babies having consented to anything

Of course he did, got to dehumanise women even further. Funny he knew which sex of 'people' he required to service his wants, the ones he views with utter contempt.

It takes all sorts I suppose. I note you swerved the other questions I asked.

Clymene · 18/06/2023 19:46

That children aren't damaged from removing them from their mothers @TeaKlaxon

Whichwhatnow · 18/06/2023 19:46

My husband would describe himself as completely damaged and has done since he went off to uni at 19. If you saw his arms and the self harm scars you might understand why I feel as I do.

As I say, i hope your kids have happy lovely lives. But stop putting down the experiences of others who have not had that experience despite the best efforts of their lovely parents. Attachment issues are real no matter how much you want to deny it to yourself.

Thereoughttobeclowns · 18/06/2023 19:47

I might need to revisit his books. I read them, enjoyed them. Missed the misogyny.

I have a friend that has acted as a surrogate twice for 2 gay couples. She has 3 children of her own. It can be altruistic.

Yep. I work with a consultant obstetrician and doctors who knew AK said he was just odious as a junior colleague.

The Northern Girls song is really, really funny is it?

David Baddiel gets regularly hauled over coals about Fantasy Football League DESPITE having apologised, admitted it was wrong and making a point that racism of all kinds isn't ok and trying to improve life.

This guy - cos he picked subjects that are the right ones to have a titter over (women) and doctors have a special licence to maintain vile dark humour (sacred cult of medicine) - still gets a free pass over it somehow.

No its not ok.

And his attitude to women KNOWING first hand the risks of birth is mind-blowingly arrogant.

He went abroad where there is less support and liability and responsibility for buyers if their womb on legs has birth complications 'she consented to'. The long term health and financial consequences for his surrogate mother...

DeeplyMovingExperience · 18/06/2023 19:53

He's a disgusting misogynist who regards the female body with utter contempt and doesn't give a shit about women's welfare. The "surrogates" were just bodies to be used for his (and his husband's) convenience. Makes my skin crawl.
