Am I weird, or are they? (Light-hearted, I hope!)

Having a (supposedly) light-hearted conversation at work about 80s music recently, someone mentioned Shakin' Stevens and laughter ensued Ankit the double denim and the moves, when I piped up, laughing along and admitted he was my first crush.

Colleagues looked shocked, they worked out I was about 4 or 5 at the time, I said that was correct. To which they said, "You were 4 and fancied an adult? Bit weird!", Bewildered, I said all kids have pop star crushes and they said yes, as teens, not as a child. Now I felt like an absolute freak. I laughed it off though.

So, I asked my DP if he had crushes at that age and said no. Am I / was I a massive weirdo?!

PS: to make matters worse. My next crushes were Holly Johnson and Neil Tennant. which my family found hilarious and I was too young and sheltered to understand what was so funny.

Please make me feel like I'm less of a weirdo.

I fancied Michael J Fox in back to the future when I was about 8 but I'd say he looked pretty young! They are some....unusual crushes OP 😬😂

WWYDIYWMRN · 03/06/2023 01:06

I wouldn't worry. My first crush at the age of 7 or 8 was Philip Schofield.

But 8 is more respectable than 4! 🙈

With! 🫣

I had a crush on Philip Schofield as well.

I had crushes from a very young age, probably around 5 or 6, though my earliest ones were for child actors like Jack Wild as The Artful Dodger and Scott Baio as Bugsy Malone.

Then I moved on to the kids TV presenters (Andy Crane was my favourite) and Jason Donovan.

I also had a photo of Shakey on my wall at a very young age OP (prob 5?).. But my first true love was Morten Harket when I was 8. Kicked ole Shakey to the kerb at that point.

My crushes were varied and different. Eddy Grant just on the 80s music countdown show I'm watching (which reminded me of Shakey conversation) and I recall fancying him too. Elvis was very handsome back in the day.

Well, I mean, who wouldn't? He's aged really well too.

Ooh. Vitrent crush just came on the V5 music show I'm watching. John Robb. He's 62 to my 45. Maybe I've always liked older guys. 😅

I did have a Jason phase. I blame Neighbours. I always had very different music taste to my mates, at the time it made me very uncool. Friends loved Bros, I loved Pet Shop Boys. Friends loved Take That, I love Manics.

So the Jason phase was most leftfield for me.

Oooh I had crushes from when I was about 5 too, OP - though mine was Robby Rosa from Menudo Grin so they were teens rather than fully grown adults if it makes a difference?

EvilElsa · 03/06/2023 01:19

Oh god, I've just remembered something mortifying which isn't celebrity related but to do with a tradesman who came to our house when I was very little. I was absolutely convinced he loved me we would get married...to the extent that I told my parents "I love him and he loves me". They obviously all burst out laughing and I remember being so embarrassed. I don't know what the hell I was thinking but I had been watching a lot of Disney and must have thought he was dashing and princely. I would have been under 5 for sure. It's one of my earliest memories, probably because everyone laughed at me!

MistressoftheDarkSide · 03/06/2023 01:20

Ah OP.

If it makes you feel any better, I was totally besotted by the Osmonds when I was around 5 - my dear late mother never tired of telling my boyfriends how I claimed they were living with us imaginary friend style and used to be outraged if someone tried to sit where Donny or Jimmy were.....for context I'm 54.... and still a little peculiar.....

Have you heard Shakey's latest offering by the way? It's surprisingly good.....

Ditto! Jason was very off-piste for me.

I loved the Manics and PSBs too, but my teenage crushes weren’t musicians, they were comedians and grumpy sportsmen like Ronnie O’Sullivan and Eric Cantona.

You just reminded me. I told my mum when I was 8 that I wanted to marry the family dog. She said I couldn't. I asked why. She said dogs and humans can't marry and I was heartbroken as I loved him more than anything. 😭 I think I am weird actually.

Not heard latest tune. Think he was on daytime TV the other week while I was WFH, but I didn't pay attention. I'll have a look.
