Am I weird, or are they? (Light-hearted, I hope!)

Having a (supposedly) light-hearted conversation at work about 80s music recently, someone mentioned Shakin' Stevens and laughter ensued Ankit the double denim and the moves, when I piped up, laughing along and admitted he was my first crush.

Colleagues looked shocked, they worked out I was about 4 or 5 at the time, I said that was correct. To which they said, "You were 4 and fancied an adult? Bit weird!", Bewildered, I said all kids have pop star crushes and they said yes, as teens, not as a child. Now I felt like an absolute freak. I laughed it off though.

So, I asked my DP if he had crushes at that age and said no. Am I / was I a massive weirdo?!

PS: to make matters worse. My next crushes were Holly Johnson and Neil Tennant. which my family found hilarious and I was too young and sheltered to understand what was so funny.

Please make me feel like I'm less of a weirdo.

Ditto! Jason was very off-piste for me.

I loved the Manics and PSBs too, but my teenage crushes weren’t musicians, they were comedians and grumpy sportsmen like Ronnie O’Sullivan and Eric Cantona.

Good taste! I've always had weird crushes none of my mates would have. In between PSB. And Manics, it was Per Gessle from Roxette. Still would TBF. 🤣

Hmm… I think I might have had a crush on the Pink Panther.

Definitely had a more than passing interest in that fox from Robin Hood.

He was just on the TV show I watched. I remember knowing he was a bloke and thinking he was beautiful.

Apparently I used to dance to culture club behind the sofa haha (always the introvert)

Oh god, I've just remembered something mortifying which isn't celebrity related but to do with a tradesman who came to our house when I was very little. I was absolutely convinced he loved me we would get married...to the extent that I told my parents "I love him and he loves me". They obviously all burst out laughing and I remember being so embarrassed. I don't know what the hell I was thinking but I had been watching a lot of Disney and must have thought he was dashing and princely. I would have been under 5 for sure. It's one of my earliest memories, probably because everyone laughed at me!

Bless you! So pure. Keeping in theme with my love for Holly Johnson and Neil Tennant, few years later I "fell in love" with my cousin's friend who was gay and I was heartbroken that he could never love me. 🙈

Other embarrassing crushes I recall include Prince Edward in my early teens - it was absolutely my mission to marry him and drive a Rangerover....

I then moved on to Duran Duran but could never decide between Simon Le Bon or Roger Taylor.....

My final proper crush was Axl Rose in my early 20s..... saw GNR at Wembley on the Use Your Illusion tour..... oh my.... what a blast.... if only time travel was possible.....

Biscuitandacuppa · 03/06/2023 01:37

You are not alone, when I was very little I can remember telling my mum that when I grew up I was going to marry Shakin Stevens! They are the weirdos 😂

Gatekeeper · 03/06/2023 01:38

My first crush was the actor Stewart Grainger who was considerably older than me!!!!

Axl was simply stunning in the Use Your Illusion days. One of my first concerts was seeing them in 93 I think. I last saw them at Download a few years ago, he's not aged well bless him. Slash on the other hand.

But Axl and Prince Edward? I'm done. 🤣

Just Googled. Cute when young. Reminds me that I found Glenn Campbell some what alluring. Rhinestone Cowboy era. Natch.

Elvis Presley for me - I must have been about 6 when I declared I was going to marry him. On being told that wasn’t possible -
it was Cliff Richard that stole
my heart……

Yeah I have eclectic taste in men it seems 😹

Axl really was gorgeous then.... he certainly did a lot of living and it shows a bit, bless him.

My DP unfortunately died last year, and he was my ultimate passion, but sometimes looking at pictures is a bit painful so I watch GNR on YouTube..... Estranged is one of my resonant songs. And of course Sweet Child of Mine....

Bizarrely DP was in a covers band in his late teens and used to do GNR songs..... long before I met him.... I've seen photos though and he rocked the Axl look for a while..... so in a roundabout way the Universe gave me my rock star boyfriend.... at the age of 42 when he had moved on to Hawkwind covers and Blues.....

Sorry, gone off on a misty eyed tangent.....

But thanks for the memories ..... they are very precious.....
