Am I weird, or are they? (Light-hearted, I hope!)

Having a (supposedly) light-hearted conversation at work about 80s music recently, someone mentioned Shakin' Stevens and laughter ensued Ankit the double denim and the moves, when I piped up, laughing along and admitted he was my first crush.

Colleagues looked shocked, they worked out I was about 4 or 5 at the time, I said that was correct. To which they said, "You were 4 and fancied an adult? Bit weird!", Bewildered, I said all kids have pop star crushes and they said yes, as teens, not as a child. Now I felt like an absolute freak. I laughed it off though.

So, I asked my DP if he had crushes at that age and said no. Am I / was I a massive weirdo?!

PS: to make matters worse. My next crushes were Holly Johnson and Neil Tennant. which my family found hilarious and I was too young and sheltered to understand what was so funny.

Please make me feel like I'm less of a weirdo.

My daughter was about 3 when she declared her two favourite people were God and Geoff Capes (the shot putter ) .

I wouldn't worry. My first crush at the age of 7 or 8 was Philip Schofield.

Haha same! When I was around 4/5, I used to kiss the TV when he was on Going Live 😂

redlou123 · 03/06/2023 06:55

I also had a thing for Wolf from Gladiators...

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 03/06/2023 06:57

My first brush at age 6-7 was Mark Hamill and Harrison Ford (Star Wars) and probably Christopher Reeve at a similar age in Superman.

I can’t recall a crush on a pop star but at age 9-10 friends fancied Adam Ant.

I can’t recall being besotted by anyone at 5 but we didn’t watch loads of tv then. Absolutely nothing wrong with your or anyone else’s crush at that age.

autienotnaughtym · 03/06/2023 06:58

I think it depends how you interpret the word crush. I remember liking Jason Donovan at around the age of 7/8 . But it was a very innocent liking. Maybe they view crushes as people you want to have sex with in which case 4 would obviously be very inappropriate.

Bealtaine23 · 03/06/2023 07:01

Mine don’t seem to have appealed to anyone else 😬One was Lee Majors - The Six-Million Dollar Man - I was about 7. My older brother used to get ‘Look-In’ a kind of celebrity magazine thing with posters - he had Charlie’s Angels, (Farrah Fawcett - married then divorced Lee Majors) the Bionic Woman etc on his bedroom walls. Along with the Bay City Rollers etc.
I moved on to CHiPs - Eric (Ponch?) was my crush and my friend liked the blonde one.
Then Richard Gere in Yanks…
but there were loads more.

Hmm… I think I might have had a crush on the Pink Panther.

Definitely had a more than passing interest in that fox from Robin Hood.

Never had a crush on the pink panther but as a kid we were sent or given a plastic bendy pink panther toy which we both adored. Kids are weird, pink panthers?! We loved the pink panther.

I recall spending ages watching Laurel and hardy and also Harold Lloyd with DB as kids, mentioned it to DM recently and she was a bit surprised by the Harold Lloyd.

Cherryana · 03/06/2023 07:04

At about 3 I had a crush on a boy with curly hair who was a dancer in the pink windmill house - he was probably about 12.

At the same age, I preferred one guy member in Bucks Fizz over the other.

When I say crush - I mean strong preference for over others, can tell they are good looking.

It was the same for women - I thought one female member of Buck’s Fizz was better looking than Cheryl but as I got older and saw her presenting on the telly, saw how lovely she was/is.

You’ve got a point there. I had crushes on two boys at my school aged 9, Neil and Stuart but there’s no way I wanted to have sex or knew much about sex then. I just used to like watching them play football in the playground from the high wall overlooking where the football area was.

mondaytosunday · 03/06/2023 07:30

I think my first crush was about age 7/8. 4 or 5 does sound a bit young, my memory of myself at that age are pretty shaky. My crush was a 14 year old boy who lived in the neighbourhood.

ThePensivePig · 03/06/2023 07:59

I was in love with Adam Ant when I was 6.

SchoolShenanigans · 03/06/2023 08:04

I don't know any 4 or 5 year olds who talk about or know celebrities.

In my experience, crushes, fandom, starts at 7/8 usually.

I have a 4 year old and a 6 year old, neither have any crushes and I don't think it would occur to them.

ExplodingCola · 03/06/2023 08:13

It's very normal and completely innocent.

Very outing but Apparently when I was 3 or so I was obsessed with Daley Thompson. I don't even remember it but I've been told that several times by my parents and I don't doubt them.

Kids are weird. I remember having crushes on various cartoon characters as a young child too.

ExplodingCola · 03/06/2023 08:14

Same.

gabsdot45 · 03/06/2023 08:41

I fell in love with a boy in my class when I was 5. I kissed the back of his head when we were in the Wendy house. His name was David. I've always been bit mad.

gabsdot45 · 03/06/2023 08:42

Boy mad

Hywel Bennett was arrogantly gorgeous.

Well that certainly confirms that I have a type then. Arrogantly gorgeous is a great description.

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 03/06/2023 11:04

@NannyOggsWhiskyStash 🤣 loved him in ‘Shelley’.

longwayoff · 03/06/2023 11:16

Friends daughter, about 4 years old, developed a crush on Clint Eastwood in old TV films. I like him, can we go and see him Mummy? Trying to explain he was now older than her grandad, and didnt look like that now, was difficult.

newtb · 03/06/2023 11:31

When I was little I was going to marry Dr Kildare when I grew up. Richard Chamberlain is gay.

TheLeadbetterLife · 03/06/2023 01:13

I had a crush on Philip Schofield as well.

I had crushes from a very young age, probably around 5 or 6, though my earliest ones were for child actors like Jack Wild as The Artful Dodger and Scott Baio as Bugsy Malone.

Then I moved on to the kids TV presenters (Andy Crane was my favourite) and Jason Donovan.

Oh yes! Jack Wild. I had forgotten him. H R Pufnstuf. I did have a crush on him when I was about 5.

FannyFifer · 03/06/2023 11:53

I LOVED Adam Ant when I was about 5, had a big poster of him on my wall. Think it was all his fancy outfits & makeup I liked best.

MistressoftheDarkSide · 03/06/2023 01:20

Ah OP.

If it makes you feel any better, I was totally besotted by the Osmonds when I was around 5 - my dear late mother never tired of telling my boyfriends how I claimed they were living with us imaginary friend style and used to be outraged if someone tried to sit where Donny or Jimmy were.....for context I'm 54.... and still a little peculiar.....

Have you heard Shakey's latest offering by the way? It's surprisingly good.....

🤣🤣 I loved Donny - still do - but Jimmy was my imaginary friend. In fact I shared him with my friend Belinda. He joined in all our games. Belinda was real..... I think.

Rinkydinkydoodle · 03/06/2023 12:00

@IchWill

I will see your Shakey and raise you this reprobate. He was my ideal man between the ages of five and the (fairly recent) day I found out he was rumoured to have really bad breath. Still a big suave stunner though.

Am I weird, or are they? (Light-hearted, I hope!)
MistressoftheDarkSide · 03/06/2023 12:07

High five @Createausername1970 😹

I still have imaginary friends..... I think......
