Hes taking a 45l hiking bag for hand luggage

Were a family of 4, me, OH, DS 6, and LO baby.
Flying out tommrow I will have LOs changing bag with all his bits and bobs. DS will have his little backpack with spare change of clothes, teddy and colouring. OH usually takes a grey normal sized backpack where we put doucments, snacks and other bits as hand luggage. We've used the bag on other flights it's also wearable for both of us (even though he has this obsession of hanging everything off it.) We are also taking 2 hold luggage and stroller.

Earlier I told OH that we need to put something in the grey bag he said I'm taking my new bag, I asked which one he said it's in the other room, I went and had a look and it's a FUCKING 45L hiking bag with waist straps and just a monstrosity. I said we dont need such a big bag there barley enough seating room. Plus I will have baby in the baby carrier, so will struggle to carry other things. Especially If ASD DS6 has a meltdown and I have to carry him.

From the past few holidays Ive realised for us it's best not to have lots of hand luggage as we never get space in the overhead compartments despite how early we get to our seats, so we've had to put stuff under the seats. OH is also overweight and takes up a bit of extra room, he ends up squashing me most of the time, he always leaves his puffa coat on for the whole flight and just looks uncomfortable. He eventually takes it off but there never any space so he tries to shove it behind my seat for me to use as a cushion, which I dont want, as I'll be holding baby so less room anyway. I've tried to explain myself and the reasons but hes adamant hes going to take it.

I had sorted the bags on friday so everything was manageable but now last minute hes decided take that hideous hiking bag. Hes not packed a single thing, I've done everything, even packed his crap. I'm just fucking pissed off with this type of shit that he does. He always does random shit like this last minute. He doesnt even hike, he hates walking. He won't ever use that bag again. I'm just festering because i know exactly what will happen tomorrow because hes so predictable but as always it will end up being my fault.

That's a rather large bag for a carry on - is it even within the airlines carry on guidelines? That might be a quick way to end the discussion.

Exactly what I was thinking.

Who are you flying with? Will they even let a bag that size on as hand luggage? You may end up paying a fortune at the airport to put it in the hold then you'll be scrabbling about trying to take out the essentials you need on the plane!

BungleandGeorge · 30/05/2023 21:39

It will be larger than cabin size wont it? Don’t you take your own handbag or something? It would be easier to take 2 smaller rucksacks

Flurbegurb · 30/05/2023 21:39

What airline are you flying with?

Do you have to sit together...

Is this a pre holiday row vent or are there deeper issues about him being a dickhead?

Not the main point of the thread, but why in the name of fuck are you doing his packing? Tell the lazy sod to do his own packing.

TUCKINGFYP0 · 30/05/2023 21:41

Check the airline website or your booking to see the sizes and weights for cabin bags. 45l is probably too big. If you arrive at the gate with a bag that’s too big they will make you gate check it and charge you about £60.

saltinesandcoffeecups · 30/05/2023 21:42

Just tell him fine, but you aren’t carrying it. You will walk away when they make him check it…you won’t carry anything he has to frantically pull out of it at the last minute and you will point and laugh at him while he’s paying for it.

And tell him the alternative is that he takes the normal bag and none of those things will happen. It’s entirely his choice.

oh and who the hell wears a big coat? Tell him it’s not going in your seat.

BungleandGeorge · 30/05/2023 21:43

I’d also make a fuss if someone has taken all the space in the overhead locker above your row!

HadalyEve · 30/05/2023 21:43

He will be fined and forced to check that hiking bag. No airline allows hand luggage that large and many wouldn’t allow a cabin bag that large.

Earlystartsmakemegrumpy · 30/05/2023 21:45

If you're flying easyJet you can only take a v small bag (that fits under the seat) as carry on now, unless you pay extra. I believe a lot of the airlines have similar. The days of being able to turn up with a massive case/bag as carry on are pretty much gone now.

Thats what i thought

Mummapenguin20 · 30/05/2023 21:47

Is that size in guidlines

Hawkins0001 · 30/05/2023 21:47

All the best op

FriedBrainFood · 30/05/2023 21:50

When I told him it may not meet the baggage guidelines, i could tell he didn't think about that but his reply was it'll be fine. flying withJet2. The bag wont be full to the brim. But when I weighed it was 7kg and I still had a few other thing to put in.

@BungleandGeorge as I have babys changing bag I dont take one for myself because I wont really be able to carry another baby. Which is why, we normally just use the grey backpack that OH wears and I have baby on sling and can hold babys changing bag in my hand

Realistically it's not going to be put on as hand luggage I don't think 🤔

ilovepuppies2019 · 30/05/2023 21:53

Google the rules OP! I strongly agree with others, they will not accept the bag. You can check that height, length, depth and weight that is permitted for carry on. If he bought the bag to be carry on and didn't think of it then that's just daft. That's why they sell the small suitcases, so everyone knows that they will fit!

GladysHeeler · 30/05/2023 21:55

Never mind the weight, it's the measurements that matter for hand luggage.

JenniferBarkley · 30/05/2023 21:55

I flew Jet 2 last week, they checked our hand luggage in the check in queue. There's your answer...

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 30/05/2023 21:55

I went travelling round south east Asia with a 35l rucksack and just carried that on all the time. DH had a bit larger one and put it in the hole

BillyNoM8s · 30/05/2023 21:57

He needs to measure the bag. Weight is irrelevant if it's too big.

Imisscoffee2021 · 30/05/2023 21:57

100% won't be allowed on as carry on if it doesn't look the right size when the staff check the passports and boarding passes at the gate. I saw sooo many people on my last flight having their bags checked by eye, then had to try and fit it in the bag measuring station thing there, then they'd be checked into the hold. They don't charge extra which might be a good flex to get free hold luggage when lots of budget airlines charge tons for that, but if there's anything he needs for the flight in there it'll be a pain.

ShakeYourFeathers · 30/05/2023 22:00

Let him attempt the bag on a carry on and then give him the biggest "I told you so" look ever when he's told it has to go into the hold.

Just make sure you have the actual essentials and things the kids need in your bag.

Absolutely this

PinkingScissors · 30/05/2023 22:00

With Jet2 that will be fine, it'll be within the size limits. They're very generous and I've never seen them check.
