Hes taking a 45l hiking bag for hand luggage

Were a family of 4, me, OH, DS 6, and LO baby.
Flying out tommrow I will have LOs changing bag with all his bits and bobs. DS will have his little backpack with spare change of clothes, teddy and colouring. OH usually takes a grey normal sized backpack where we put doucments, snacks and other bits as hand luggage. We've used the bag on other flights it's also wearable for both of us (even though he has this obsession of hanging everything off it.) We are also taking 2 hold luggage and stroller.

Earlier I told OH that we need to put something in the grey bag he said I'm taking my new bag, I asked which one he said it's in the other room, I went and had a look and it's a FUCKING 45L hiking bag with waist straps and just a monstrosity. I said we dont need such a big bag there barley enough seating room. Plus I will have baby in the baby carrier, so will struggle to carry other things. Especially If ASD DS6 has a meltdown and I have to carry him.

From the past few holidays Ive realised for us it's best not to have lots of hand luggage as we never get space in the overhead compartments despite how early we get to our seats, so we've had to put stuff under the seats. OH is also overweight and takes up a bit of extra room, he ends up squashing me most of the time, he always leaves his puffa coat on for the whole flight and just looks uncomfortable. He eventually takes it off but there never any space so he tries to shove it behind my seat for me to use as a cushion, which I dont want, as I'll be holding baby so less room anyway. I've tried to explain myself and the reasons but hes adamant hes going to take it.

I had sorted the bags on friday so everything was manageable but now last minute hes decided take that hideous hiking bag. Hes not packed a single thing, I've done everything, even packed his crap. I'm just fucking pissed off with this type of shit that he does. He always does random shit like this last minute. He doesnt even hike, he hates walking. He won't ever use that bag again. I'm just festering because i know exactly what will happen tomorrow because hes so predictable but as always it will end up being my fault.

45l that’s nothing. My DH used to take much bigger as hand luggage. I’d pretend not to be with him in case he was stopped for it. He always managed to get it in the overhead lockers too.

S4uk · 01/06/2023 18:15

My dad does similar.
just fill it with bottles of duty free for him to carry…

Cantthinkof1rightnow · 01/06/2023 18:54

@FriedBrainFood did he get it in the plane or did he have to pay?

Cantthinkof1rightnow · 01/06/2023 18:54

*on

Hmm1234 · 01/06/2023 21:02

It really depends who you’re flying with. Ryan air no chance. Air France probably. If it fits in the overhead luggage he should be ok. I’ve seen them with toddlers being carried in and seems to be fine with most airlines

I’m sure I read OP posted that he changed his mind and decided to take his old travel bag.

He went out at 1 in the morning to put the cases in the car then locked himself out the house. When I got downstairs at 8 I heard banging on the front door and assumed he popped out the the corner shop. DS opened the front door and OH loudly says 'are you dead to the world I was knocking, I was locked out since 1'. He left his phone in the kitchen so couldn't call me either. Funny as he usually has that phone stuck up his arse 24/7.

Omg this is the funniest - sorry!

Redragtoabull · 01/06/2023 21:43

Staycation with the kids comes to mind. I hope you get to have some R&R for yourself.

Airspice · 01/06/2023 22:05

I’m cabin crew and he won’t be allowed to take that on as hand luggage, it’s too big. And sorry but he sounds like a selfish twat!

A 45L backpack is within the dimensions for most airlines hand luggage. Not the new hang luggage rules for Ryan air / easyJet but their standard size and it definitely is within the allowance for Jet 2.

What airline do you work for that you don’t understand what size a 45L backpack is?

QueSyrahSyrah · 01/06/2023 22:17

Crobbyhaft · 31/05/2023 13:43

All the peple saying it seems a normal size for cabin luggage, you realise its this bag? It is not a small rucksack... It's measurements say its 60cm x 36cm x 26cm. Jet2, who the OP has said they're flying with allow hand luggage of 56cm x 45cm x 25cm. So if full, it would be too big to use.

Now imagine that person with a cabin sized hard shell wheely trolley case strapped to her back, and ask yourself what the difference is.

The DH's soft bag is 4cm taller than Jet2 limits. Don't fill it and bingo, it fits. They don't roll it out flat to measure it; they just need to know it'll fit in the required space, which it will assuming it's not full.

Anyway we can probably assume the OP is too busy raging round Bodrum at some other minor DH related misdemeanour to come back now.

beautifuldaytosavelives · 02/06/2023 00:00

I thought there was nothing more unattractive than a man with a backpack, but now you've given me the image of an overweight man, heading towards a hot destination in a puffer jacket with things hanging off an oversized backpack. Perhaps keep your ticket in the baby bag and pretend you're not with him. Happy holidays!

Made me laugh, and at 2 am with LO wide awake I needed that. Have a great holiday.

And if the roles were swapped, you wouldn’t be saying that would you.

OP has a control issue in all honesty and sounds petty and spiteful against her DH.

Muncha · 02/06/2023 07:28

He was knocking on the door for 7 hours?!

LordSugarTits · 02/06/2023 08:55

"I’m cabin crew and he won’t be allowed to take that on as hand luggage, it’s too big."

Nope. Unless it was bursting at the seams then it's fine for jet2

Thanks for sharing this, yes it does look bigger in this pic than it did in the OP’s one she shared.

@FriedBrainFood let us know how the holiday and the flights went!
I have to say I agree with others that i
wouldnt be packing for him… I’d ask about 4 days before if he wants anything washing to pack… anything damp pack in a black bin bag in the case so it doesn’t make your things wet.
I’d sit the 6 year old in the middle of us both as he won’t be so affected if OH is taking up more than his own seat… I wouldn’t allow OH to put anything on my seat…. Tell him to put his puffer jacket under his own seat! If he asked me to carry anything extra I’d say ‘yeah sure.. take all this and the kids and I’ll take that!’

TBH it sounds too stressful and I’d rather go to a haven or Butlins than go through all this with 2 small children and a man child!!

as for being locked out all night…. How??? Surely you heard him banging on the door…. Do you sleep through your baby waking up too? Does seem very odd.

You do sound very unhappy OH, I think you need to work on the relationship or leave it, no one should be this miserable.

Bekstar · 02/06/2023 22:08

45L sounds like it's defo over the size restrictions for carry on luggage so you may want to check and advise him. Because if he gets there with it he'll have to dispose of stuff or go home if they won't let him on with it.

Bekstar · 02/06/2023 22:17

Jet 2 state
You may carry on board one piece of hand luggage free of charge, as long as it weighs no more than 10kg and is no larger than 56cm x 45cm x 25cm, including any wheels and handles.

If it's the trespass version of the bag he has it is over the guidelines by at least 4cm. Just discussing this with a friend while we have a drink who says his autistic son was refused a 35L rucksack of the same type by Jet2.due to the fact that it measured 50cm X 45cm X 30cm so was deeper then the requirements by 5cm. They measure the bag irrelevant of what is in it.

GeraltsBathtub · 02/06/2023 23:31

@Bekstar I have this exact bag and have taken it on Jet2 without issue. It would have been fine. But OP forced him to take a different bag so it’s irrelevant now anyway.

Riv · 05/06/2023 23:23

I took a 50 x 40 x 20 backpack on board a jet2 flight last month. That’s smaller than the maximum allowed.
It wasn’t full but it WAS checked- I had to put it in the sizing thing before I got into the check in queue. I was allowed through- but I had to prove my small hand bag thing, (which I carry a purse and my passport) would fit into the backpack and the backpack still fit in the frame.
Several other people with slightly bigger hand luggage, and those with extra bags that didn’t fit in the frame at the same time had to pay quite a lot extra to have their bags put in the hold. They weren’t allowed to take them through to the “airside”. The things we carried out from the check were visually inspected by the staff member stationed at the barrier as you left the check in queue (some people were made to put their things in another measure and sent back to check their things in) They counted the wheels and handles in the size and it had to fit easily not be forced or squashed in.
The size was checked again as we boarded. The staff were quite firm but friendly and kept saying things like these are the new rules, we know some people won’t have noticed the changes on line or in the t&cs but there can be no exceptions. Also that Jet2 now has a more generous allowance than the other comparable airlines. The size was crucial but I don’t think anyone actually weighed the hand luggage.

HomeB · 06/06/2023 09:38

A completely different experience to a family members flight this week with jet2 from Leeds. They were completely relaxed, no checks on bag sizes. I think it just shows that, like anything, it depends on the staff member you get on the day.

WisherWood · 06/06/2023 10:09

Being cynical I suspect it also depends on how well their budget is doing. They may get told to tighten up from time to time to bring in some extra cash. The less cynical version is that they have to be more careful if flights are busy.

frustratednomad · 06/06/2023 11:49

@Riv do you mind me asking which airport you flew from as we are going from Stansted on saturday and I'm a bit worried in case they are the ones doing the stringent checks.

HomeB · 06/06/2023 13:19

@frustratednomad the baggage allowance with jet2 is so generous you could just pack most of it in the cases. It sounds like that poster had 2 bags as well which is sometimes the thing that prompts them to check.
