To say it’s “cliquey” not “clicky”

Just that, really. I keep seeing things like “the parents at school are very clicky” - no! They form cliques, not clicks. Not normally one to comment on this stuff, but that one really makes me cringe!

This has irritated me on 2 threads this morning. It’s the new ‘Chester draws’!

Chester draws melts my head.

SparklyBlackKitten · 25/05/2023 08:50

@GuitarsUnderTheStars triggered much 😬?

Wrongsideofpennines · 25/05/2023 08:51

I literally had this conversation with my husband this week.

I think its like people pronouncing nougat as nugget, and gillet with a hard g and t.

Conkersinautumn · 25/05/2023 08:52

This is a UK/ US difference. Living in the UK I've only heard click coming up since the american teen movies of the 00s.

diddl · 25/05/2023 08:52

Rediculous is one that gets me!

Papernotplastic · 25/05/2023 08:53

I love the idea that chest of drawers > chester draws > Chester drawers (like a Belfast sink)

Papernotplastic · 25/05/2023 08:54

‘Rediculous’ could be ridiculous stuff on Reddit.

I've seen this so many times I was starting to wonder if I'd got it wrong and it was Chester draws! 🤦🏻‍♀️😂

FufferPish · 25/05/2023 08:56

Or both, since humans do not have the capacity to produce clicks with their mouths (other than speakers of Xosa), perhaps these groups strategically click their hips to echolocate the others of their peer group in the space?

Wavescrashingonthebeach · 25/05/2023 08:57

On route instead of en route.

"Was" instead of "Née"

nosykids · 25/05/2023 08:57

I am possibly the very worst offender because I thought click and clique were two different, but similar, words for the same thing. I assumed it was a regional difference.

I've seen in on here without reference to Reddit.

How does one pronounce Nduja?

I've noticed that Americans also say 'nitch' instead of 'niche' - no idea whether or not it is spelt the same.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 25/05/2023 09:01

Apparently (some) Americans pronounce niche "nitch". At least that isn't as confusing though, since it isn't a word, where you could have groups all clicking at each other (like crabs with pincers).

nosykids · 25/05/2023 09:01

Paella is an interesting one. Brits are happy to pronounce tortilla correctly but seem embarrassed to do the same with paella.

SD1978 · 25/05/2023 09:01

'Draws' for drawers to be honest gives me the higher rage......

I click my tongue. Usually in a disapproving manner.

towriteyoumustlive · 25/05/2023 09:04

When you say "clique" the French way it does somewhat sound like "click" or could at least be heard that way, so I imagine those who don't read as much who haven't seen it written down, might think the word is "click" rather than "clique".

Just like toddlers learn language, people hear others saying it and repeat it, so again if they've not seen it written then they'd repeat the wrong word.

I remember a young girl who was a Grand Prix fan and she won the opportunity to introduce it on TV. She had to read the auto-queue screen, so said the correct pronunciation, then turned round to the presenter and asked why they'd spelt it "grand prix" not "grawn pree".

Wavescrashingonthebeach · 25/05/2023 09:04

@nosykids

I know plenty of people who pronounce the L's in tortilla- they say tor-till-a

These are also the people that say see-ah-batta bread and Peter bread 😂

UN DOO YAH

OutsideVoices · 25/05/2023 09:06

As I would only use it negatively for an unfriendly group, I just call them cunts. Cunts, easy to pronounce for everyone.

Ha, much better name for the cliques I’ve known. 🤣

I’m American and pronounce it click. Just accents I guess.

FufferPish · 25/05/2023 09:07

There are different clicks, if you can do the postalveolar click I'd be most impressed!

foulksmills · 25/05/2023 09:10

I see your 'rediculous' and raise you 'discusting'.
