Claire Balding's (love CB btw) is trying very hard to say how 'joyful' it feels and is a special day but it just doesn't seem like usual royal events to me. Just feels very flat. Maybe it's the greyish weather. AIBU?

Would you like to discuss ALL the issues with America in this post also? We could do both?!

I'll start, guns, police and abortion rights.

smn772 · 06/05/2023 13:51

Haven't read through everyone's comments so don't know if this has already been said but i would imagine he is still possibly grieving for his mom knowing he is there because she is not. Shame about the weather

Margot78 · 06/05/2023 13:52

Let’s be honest we all still miss our queen and a grumpy septuagenarian is not creating the same vibe. People were very united in their love for the queen but Charles was perceived as very much the villain in his marriage to Diana rightly or wrongly. We’re all a bit bored or Harry and no-one wants to see Prince Andrew so there’s not much to tune in for. So yes it was always going to be on the underwhelming side. Charles comes across as someone who is a bit uncomfortable in these situations and needs everything to be just right. I’m guessing Wills and Kate were late trying to get the kids to turn off the ipads and put their shoes on 😁

TeenLifeMum · 06/05/2023 13:53

@Novella4 😆 you weren’t there and don’t know. I’ve been interview prepping recently and it reminded me of when I’ve been trying to go through things. I’m not as animated in the interviews.

he may have been pissed off about something but we literally do not know. It’s speculation not fact, which is fine but don’t state it as fact.

i actually think quite a lot of it is totally bonkers. I am weirdly fascinated though.

kh123 · 06/05/2023 13:55

I watched it. I was nervous throughout that Charles would stumble, drop his crown or accidently stab someone with his sword.

William looked bored and couldn't even memorise a one line sentence.

I liked the music and signing though.

Novella4 · 06/05/2023 13:55

Last rant :

I am expected to address groups of people ad hoc
I'm not a public figure

When I was at school if you were speaking to assembly and it was shorter than a paragraph you were bloody well expected to memorise and look up

William ( hopefully not ) expects to be 'king'
This farce has cost 250 million
William could not even be bothered to learn a sentence ! That reading of pledge , looking to side was v v poor

There could more to critique but luckily for us all that's the only clip I saw on Twitter
I expect Camilla was grinning all over the place though
Charles will be in right mood now - so be careful what you wish for

CoinsinaJar · 06/05/2023 14:00

Not read the whole thread, but agree it was all a bit routine, in spite of them trotting out every horse available. The weather hasn't helped though. Not a tory fan either, but credit to Penny Mordaunt for hanging on to that sword all day. Must have weighed a ton.

morningtoncrescent62 · 06/05/2023 14:02

I found myself wondering what Edward VII's coronation was like. There are similarities in the context: both following the long reign of their respective mothers who were much more popular than them, and getting on in life by the time they were crowned. Was there the same lack of excitement then as I'm picking up today?

Haven't watched much of the coverage, but I've enjoyed the music when I've zoned in.

You are right we don’t know for certain but the plan would not have been for the King to arrive outside the Abbey and then sit waiting in the carriage for what was possibly the best part of five minutes…parades and ceremonial events don’t work like that when it comes to the leading dignitaries.

IMO something certainly went wrong with timings - now whether he used the time to go through lines I don’t know, but watching it live he didn’t look like a very happy bunny at all.

Would be interesting to to see if there is a link to whole episode.

I don't.

Brittl · 06/05/2023 14:04

The mood is nothing compared to the jubilee he just doesn't compare to his mother who was a class act , you never heard about her ranting. I never thought I'd say it but I miss the Queen very much 😔.

100%!!!! The very idea of an American criticising given all of the above.... staggering all right!!

Who does? Not anyone I know.

Fererr · 06/05/2023 14:10

I'm also very uneasy at the arrest of protestors which feels fundamentally unBritish to me.

It’s bad, but that is on this government passing two deeply troubling acts, the Policing Act, 2022 and now just v recently the Public Order Bill, 2023 which both curb the right to protest. The UNCHR issued a press release a few days ago on the Public Order Bill that has just passed saying:

“The Public Order Bill, which has now been passed by Parliament in the United Kingdom, is deeply troubling legislation that is incompatible with the UK’s international human rights obligations regarding people’s rights to freedom of expression, peaceful assembly and association, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk warned on Thursday.”

There's a video of Charles ranting in the his golden carriage outside the abbey

Where did you see that?

Blendintothebackground · 06/05/2023 14:15

It’s a very traditional and historical coronation, I don’t agree.

and whoever said there were no crowds there was quite magnificently wrong!

Chickenkeev · 06/05/2023 14:16

What would be the process for removing the royalty? Referendum?

MoirasSaggyBundles · 06/05/2023 14:22

Barrythetimesprout · 06/05/2023 12:33

Brilliant 🤣
When he was handed 'the Bracelets of sincerity and wisdom' I thought I was watching Monty Python too.

I have to admit, when they presented the bracelets, I did think “Wonder Woman”.

Greenpin · 06/05/2023 14:22

The route was shortened because of security and cost. Not because there wouldn't be crowds.

DownNative · 06/05/2023 14:22

SallyWD · 06/05/2023 13:40

I think you exaggerated what you saw and now you're backtracking!! Don't worry, I've done it many times myself for dramatic effect 😉

Correct- they clearly exaggerated the clip they saw which is definitely what was in that twitter one. They hoped it would stoke up negative posts towards the King. Backtracked after you'd seen the clip! 🤣

It's clearly not a rant. Looked more like assertiveness than anything else.

Looking forward to the flypast soon!

Greenpin · 06/05/2023 14:22

Correct - we're seeing a very big crowd filling up the Mall leading to Buckingham Palace as we speak live on TV!

Even though the weather isn't great.

Coxspurplepippin · 06/05/2023 14:25

CreationNat1on · 06/05/2023 13:12

There is literally no one lining the streets.

You might want to have a look at the current footage of the Mall. A sea of humanity Grin

PutinSmellsPassItOn · 06/05/2023 14:27

Keep thinking of all the homeless people they cleared away to put on the event.......leaves a bit of a sour taste to me. I hope they were at least given somewhere to store their stuff.
