I am indifferent to the Monarchy but AIBU to think it all feels very weird and drab?

Claire Balding's (love CB btw) is trying very hard to say how 'joyful' it feels and is a special day but it just doesn't seem like usual royal events to me. Just feels very flat. Maybe it's the greyish weather. AIBU?

It does to me

maybe the weather. Maybe just a bit off because:

  1. they are just normal people with their flaws eg Andrew, Harry and Charles himself
  2. the country is in a CoL crisis
  3. he isn’t the queen
PipinwasAuntieMabelsdog · 06/05/2023 11:33

That's what I was thinking

Camilla looks terrified to me as well.

There's a video of Charles ranting in the his golden carriage outside the abbey

Too old, too shop soiled, too selfish…..

He's always ranting. Horrible man. And Camilla often looks nervous around him. I have no TV at the mo so I'm not watching, but I can imagine it feels lacklustre. The contrast between him and the dignified, popular Queen is stark, and the coronation is a reminder of what we've lost.

Papernotplastic · 06/05/2023 11:44

He’s 74 and already looks less capable and less vigorous than either of his parents at that age (or than his mother did at 84!) He’s quite weird and drab.

Novella4 · 06/05/2023 11:44

I watched for about 5 mins becaseu I wanted to check the crowd for myself

V thin - maybe 4 deep where there is a crowd and nothing by Admiralty Arch
The route was shortened too because they knew there would be lower numbers

Over 250 000 000 for this ?
And peaceful prearranged protesters arrested ??

SequinDiscoBiscuits · 06/05/2023 11:48

Maybe because everyone knows we'll be subjected to another one in a few years time... Nobody CBA. Including Camilla, judging by her face.

LaviniasBigBloomers · 06/05/2023 11:49

I think it's a solemn religious occasion if you buy into it, I mean, I don't but I don't think 'joyful' is the pitch they're going for.

FavouriteDogMug · 06/05/2023 11:52

It's all a bit weird and boring tbh

Oysterbabe · 06/05/2023 11:53

They're about to bring out the holy hand grenade of antioch, surely it'll kick right off.

AmeliaEarhart · 06/05/2023 11:53

What was he ranting about?

I agree. I haven't got to watch it all, but the bits I have seen are.... boring.

Maybe that's why there's a concert tomorrow- the fun part after the legal ceremony today.

Chickychoccyegg · 06/05/2023 11:59

Its even more boring than I expected.

I get what you mean about the holy aspect. We're Jewish and appreciate the multi faith inclusion. By Joyful, I meant in terms of the people outside I suppose. It just doesn't 'feel' the same as other big events, even the holy ones like weddings

Michaelmonstera · 06/05/2023 12:11

I am also indifferent to the monarchy but if they were going to do a procession, I would have liked a few more carriages. I thought it looked a bit thin.

As an irrelevant aside, what is going to happen to this route when Admiralty Arch is turned into a hotel?

TheaBrandt · 06/05/2023 12:11

It’s like a wedding only the bride is missing which makes it boring!

Laurama91 · 06/05/2023 12:11

Maybe because we're used to jubilees. Big celebration. And this is a different event. I think Charles also looked very nervous.

To be honest I'm not religious and have always found any church service the same.

cushioncovers · 06/05/2023 12:11

It's just a formal ceremony rather than a joyful celebration in my opinion and I'm guessing Charles finds the whole thing tiresome. He's never wanted to be king and seems happier at his home in Tetbury. Looks to me as if he's been crying to be honest.

SquirrelSoShiny · 06/05/2023 12:11

I think everyone is just royalled out between the jubilee, the funeral and now this. I'm also very uneasy at the arrest of protestors which feels fundamentally unBritish to me.
