Claire Balding's (love CB btw) is trying very hard to say how 'joyful' it feels and is a special day but it just doesn't seem like usual royal events to me. Just feels very flat. Maybe it's the greyish weather. AIBU?

The bits of the nonsense watched looked medieval. Mordant with a giant sword? What was that about? The Charlotte kid looking pale and peaky in a long white robe. The Blessed Katherine dressed as Britannia .....it was all very, very odd. He's rich enough to pay for this, and it's nothing short of disgusting that the tax payers footed the bill. The money could have been spent on the NHS. We have food banks and kids are going hungry!!This country is a fucking looney bin.

Even if we didn't have RF, pomp and ceremony, the government certainly wouldn't spend the money saved on the poorest. They would make sure their cronies got more of the pot.

There is no reason for homelessness, poverty, food banks etc, they are choosing to keep people poor.

I was shocked at the arrest of the peaceful protestors. Felt sinister.

It is sinister and the entirely possible due to the Conservatives new Police Bill.

The ability to arrest them is only the tip of the iceberg of what that Bill allows Sad

The people interviewed in the crowd looked pretty joyful, but the grey skies and rain were a really dampener on the day. Felt sorry for all the people. Today, glorious sunshine and really warm. typical!

If we switched to a Republic would be cost of an inauguration every 4 years or so for ceremonial head of state/president.

i loved Charlotte’s outfit.

Kate was made a Dame Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order (GCVO) by the late Queen in 2019, so is now entitled to wear the Grand Cross Mantles of the Royal Victorian Order hence the robes

i lean Republican btw.

Yes, on our govt and their awful new acts of Parliament putting more curbs on protest, so wrong.

So many whingers - no-one forced you to watch it. Haven't you anything better to do than complain about something you claim to be uninterested in?

It’s every 7 years in RoI.

The 2019 evening reception + buffet was 100,000 EUR. Throw in another 100k for the day ceremony. 200k

It costs around 4million EUR pa to run the state office vs. £86 million pa for the sovereign grant.

Agree with this. The sheer level of complaining

No one has to watch or be involved. There’s other stuff to do

I am an old lady living in the Caribbean but i got up at 4am and watched it all. This is a solemn, religious occasion based on the the old Prayer Book. It is not a jolly party occasion. For those who are indifferent to the Monarchy just imagine the alternative! I shudder at the thought of some second rate politician as President! We only need to look at our cousins in USA! They have a choice between Trump and Biden. And there are 250 million of them. While i am not an adoring fan of King Charles, he will grow into his role with Camilla to support him. Do not be so shallow as to expect a solemn religious ceremony to have pizzaz. Just wish the new King well on his very difficult job. He has large shoes to fill after our beloved Queen.

Can’t stand him, sorry. I don’t he’ll do his job any better as king than he did as PoW.

i live in the beautiful island of St Lucia. The Lucians are very good, friendly people and the scenery and the beaches are wonderful too. I have no burning desire to return to my London home.

vera99 · 07/05/2023 21:10

Just back from a birthday party in Hither Green from Welling. On the way spotted one party in a front garden and discounting businesses way and back by 2 different routes and hour in total spotted 6 - yes 6 private houses with flags or decorations out. At the party I was the only one who watched it or even cared about it (in a negative way).

Many years ago I worked with a St Lucian lady she was absolutely wonderful and full of cheer and good humour. You are in the nearest thing to paradise on this earth !

SunnyEgg · 07/05/2023 21:14

To counter the pp we had a friendly sunny party in lovely warmth and yes many watched and it was all very happy and positive.

wentworthinmate · 07/05/2023 21:56

Here come the republicans! I’m not even going to bother reading any posts because they will all be negative.

LoveComedy · 07/05/2023 22:24

Shallow people with a poor attention span may have found it "boring"!

I think it’s absolutely fine to have an opinion about a public event our taxes paid for, even if those opinions are negative. That’s not whinging.

"Outdated"??? Well it's been a tradition since 1066 so it will be a little bit dated!! If you don't get the poignancy or the sense of history, you have no soul!!

It wasn't meant to be a jolly - it was a serious religious occasion. What did you want - clowns?!!

I am quite happy for you to enjoy it and feel a sense of poignancy - why do you feel the need to suggest I have no soul? Do you struggle with people having and voicing alternative views to your own? Do you wish to silence people who don't agree with you?
