I am indifferent to the Monarchy but AIBU to think it all feels very weird and drab?

Claire Balding's (love CB btw) is trying very hard to say how 'joyful' it feels and is a special day but it just doesn't seem like usual royal events to me. Just feels very flat. Maybe it's the greyish weather. AIBU?

I liked the gospel singers.

Amazing harmonies and beautiful voices!

zen1 · 06/05/2023 16:15

Highlights for me were the gospel singers and Zadok the Priest.

Who calls Americans thick? I think that vast chip on your shoulder is obscuring your view.

As for racism, have you visited the southern states lately?

What paedophiles, and how are we paying for them to do anything?

Whether you like them or not, the monarchy really distinguishes Britain from other nations.

Yeh and not in a good way

Hardly anybody there in the so-called crowds. Real shocker.

You weren't watching, were you?

Let me see Prince Andrew. They were good friends with that disgusting peado Jimmy Savile Rolf Harris. Moutbatten had a well known penchant for young boys in Sligo before the IRA blew him up.
A comparison to some southern states does not make racism ok.
No chip just not blinkered.

He's hardly thrashing about the carriage in fury. It's been LITERALLY organised with military precision. K and W have tons of help. I'd be pissed off if they were late too. The stress on everyone not to screw something up was immense. He's allowed to have a rant to his wife about his son messing it up.

Probably down to a last minute poo from Louis

I went because I've never been to anything like that before and dd wanted to go.

There was a great atmosphere, definitely party mood, even when raining. We sat with a group of people from all over the world when we arrived early, which passed the time nicely.
Only sad part was they closed the area because it was full quite early and one of the ladies got a phone call to say the rest of her family didn't get in.
We were nowhere near the front as by the time we were in, it was already 5/6 people deep along, so dd balanced on a fence behind me so she could see and tell me what was happening.
Lots of cheering especially for KC3 and also a big cheer when Camilla was crowned on the big screen.

We got early onto the mall and got right at the front to see them on the balcony so we didn't realise how full it was behind us until we saw pictures later.

We're now in a pub reshowing the coronation so we're seeing the bits we missed.

There is literally no one lining the streets.

And you don't know the meaning of the word "literally". Because this is an obvious lie.

Gosh how embarrassing for you. Blush I bet you wish you could delete posts on here eh? 'Literally no one lining the streets...' LMFAO!!! 😂 I am literally cringing for you!!! 😬

If this isn't proof that the Royal Family are as popular as ever, and are not going anywhere, then I don't know what is!

No it really doesn't, actually Britain isbecoming an embarrassent to be honest , given this changing world.

Charles reading off a piece of paper made me giggle. He’s had a long time to prepare, you’d think he’d learn the lines 😂

If I were going through the most important ceremony of my life and it was being broadcast to millions, something tells me I wouldn't want to rely on my memory.

Viviennemary · 06/05/2023 16:48

I was surprised how utterly boring it was. Queens was much better from the clips I've seen.

I agree with you @QueenMegan , America does have its problems both politically and socially but with how much is wasted on the monarchy I'm embarrassed to be British.

Btw lots of royalists always go on about how America loves the royals and they bring so much respect and tourism to the UK etc. Its seriously deluded so good to get a little insight into how people in the US really view the monarchy lol

catscatscurrantscurrants · 06/05/2023 16:57

One part of the coronation ceremony that had been discarded this time and which I wished was included - at the moment the crown is placed on the monarch's head, all the peers of the realm and royal princesses and princes put on their coronets. I'd read that this was one of the highlights of past coronations, that moment when all the jewels flash brilliantly all over the abbey. Sometimes, modernising a ceremony doesn't improve it.

Coxspurplepippin · 06/05/2023 17:03

'but with how much is wasted on the monarchy I'm embarrassed to be British.'

You do realise the presidential inauguration costs well in excess of US$100m....... And happens far more frequently than every 70 years.

Yeah the idea of having a Head of State like Donald Trump really makes a republic look like a really good plan 🙄

No one said the Head of State should be like Donald Trump. Are you saying we can't be trusted with an elected Head of State?

MargaretThursday · 06/05/2023 17:05

@SleepingStandingUp no, not me. Dd mentioned going as a possibility, but I decided against due to the weather, but then woke up at 3am so woke dd and asked if she wanted to go. She initially said no, but then changed her mind.
We caught the 4.30am train in.

Well, we've repeatedly elected a Tory government, including one headed up by Boris Johnson, so I dunno, maybe we can't be trusted.

Republicans always pooh pooh the idea of someone like Trump as an elected HOS in the UK. Not sure how they can be so sure it won't happen.

Andrew is a shit but hasn't been accused of paedophiia, and we're not paying for him to walk among us.

Who the hell said anything made racism OK? I simply pointed out that Americans aren't in the best position to claim that the Royal Family is somehow responsible for all racism.

And you still haven't managed to explain who is calling Americans thick.

If this isn't proof that the Royal Family are as popular as ever, and are not going anywhere, then I don't know what is!

I'd be curious to see the official figures as from the screen and from what I've heard from friends who live close by it was a lot less crowned than similar events including the funeral, the jubilee and even compared to many protests (especially the large anti brexit one)

Of course lots still went. No one is denying that there are still royalists out there (and yes it was wrong of that poster to say no one was lining the streets), just that they're becoming fewer and fewer as we can see by every poll on the subject and even by the general mood on places like MN

If things keep going the way they are I don't expect the monarchy to still exist in its current form by the end of the century. Tbh I'm pretty apathetic about it all now.
