I am indifferent to the Monarchy but AIBU to think it all feels very weird and drab?

Claire Balding's (love CB btw) is trying very hard to say how 'joyful' it feels and is a special day but it just doesn't seem like usual royal events to me. Just feels very flat. Maybe it's the greyish weather. AIBU?

Whether you like them or not, the monarchy really distinguishes Britain from other nations.

Servants are they?! They can come and clean my bathroom then - make themselves useful.

Yes, that's the definition of a page.

Charles reading off a piece of paper made me giggle. He’s had a long time to prepare, you’d think he’d learn the lines 😂

I would be too nervous to rely on my memory, personally.

I've only known one couple attempt to memorise the "I give you this ring as a sign of our marriage...." bit of the wedding vows and they were so overwhelmed in the moment that they got the lines completely wrong! I wouldn't risk it on global tv!

Yeah the idea of having a Head of State like Donald Trump really makes a republic look like a really good plan

Why do Monarchists always pull out Trump as though he's the only president the U.S has ever had and as though that's the only alternative? It's not the trump card that you think it is(No pun intended )

Why do republicans always say we wouldn't have a Trumpeylikey as HOS? You have no idea who we'd end up with. We had the opportunity to vote for a political party to form a govt and ended up with trump lite Boris Johnson as PM.

That's it?! I don't think he's ranting! Maybe looks a bit tired and pissed off but hardly a furious rant.

I did think it was very odd that William and Kate were so late. Charles and Camilla were left sitting outside in the carriage for at least 5 minutes.

Even Hugh Edwards commented, as Charles and Camilla's carriage arrived, that 'The Prince and Princess of Wales are still to arrive.....We are told they are on their way...'

LlynTegid · 06/05/2023 15:06

I would have liked there to be a rousing hymn at some point in the service.

There was a lovely rendition of 'Praise My Soul'.

Felt slightly queasy seeing those young lads dressed as mini red soldiers on the balcony smirking and looking supercilious above all the cheering flag waving serfs. Can you imagine what they will be like in real life lording it over their peers…

Never felt like that before watching one of these events but did today.

I thought they looked quite excited and happy to be there actually! And that's probably partly because of their age, as teenage self consciousness and awkwardness hasn't yet set in 😂

Would you like to discuss ALL the issues with America in this post also? We could do both?!

I'll start, guns, police and abortion rights.

If you talking about the royal family you might as well lump the church into this as well - religion was the first ‘political party’ which leaders used to wield their power throughout history and still do today.

It is religious ‘viewpoints’ which are still used to control women and what they are entitled to do with their bodies.

… and not in a good way. The monarchy in Norway is a better example to me of a head of state that gets it right more of the time (not all of the time, obviously).

georgarina · 06/05/2023 15:26

I was stopped in the rain at a green light today with two babies while a procession of blacked out luxury cars drove past after a fleet of police motorcycles blowing whistles and putting their hands out. Elderly woman on crutches was waiting on the other side.

Feeling quite unenthused after that.

Carcarscars · 06/05/2023 15:27

They were on front row opposite elitism and Kate .

0021andabit · 06/05/2023 15:35

I think it’s also people keep talking about it as a once in a lifetime event, & realistically it just isn’t, is it? With the best will in the world, even if he lives to 100 our kids will probably see two more coronations (if the monarchy continues that is…)

Luckydip1 · 06/05/2023 15:38

When I think of Norway, I don't think of the monarchy, I think they are quite inconsequential there.

Maybe because we're used to jubilees. Big celebration. And this is a different event. I think Charles also looked very nervous.

To be honest I'm not religious and have always found any church service the same.

Well he’s never done any big events, ever and not had long to prepare for this, just 70 odd years. And there’s only a few hundred people who do all the arranging from ironing his underpants to plonking a crown on his head. Must be hard to struggle along with all the staff. My heart bleeds for them both, not.

Prettybutdumb · 06/05/2023 15:52

I’m just surprised nobody (the royal family members in particular) erupted in fits of laughter. I mean the ridiculousness of the event. A grown man being crowned and wearing a fucking cape. In 2023 - and not for a gag. 🫣

Well I wasn’t born when the Queen was crowned. I’m 62, I may see one more coronation but I certainly won’t see two.

That clip has been posted multiple times in this thread. Attached is your earlier post with someone's reply regarding it.

It's quite clear you exaggerated the clip for effect. Earlier, you characterised it as a "rant" where you now say it was "Muttering away to himself in a right old grump". Two very different things and perceptions, I might add.

@SallyWD was right....you've backtracked.

For context if you look at about the 25 minute point of this

You can see it all kicks off when the carriage pulls up, the clergy (under the awning) look a bit concerned and somebody in uniform then goes to the carriage door nearest the cameras opens it, looks up at the King and a conversation starts… that individual is not really visible in the close up views but that is why in close up the King is looking downwards - the close up views didn’t make it into the replay.

There’s the best part of a five minute delay, plus/minus, between the carriage stopping and the party entering the abbey.

The Coronation Service

And where is Norway on the soft power rankings?!

Meanwhile, the UK is second only to the USA. Yes, the Royals have long been a big part of British soft power.

Zadok the Priest was absolutely fantastic
