Claire Balding's (love CB btw) is trying very hard to say how 'joyful' it feels and is a special day but it just doesn't seem like usual royal events to me. Just feels very flat. Maybe it's the greyish weather. AIBU?

@MissDollyMix

Yeah the idea of having a Head of State like Donald Trump really makes a republic look like a really good plan 🙄

No one said the Head of State should be like Donald Trump. Are you saying we can't be trusted with an elected Head of State?

Umm Boaty McBoatface… Brexit….

I was surprised how utterly boring it was. Queens was much better from the clips I've seen.

Have you sat through all three hours of Queen Elizabeth's coronation? Perhaps when you have you can tell us which was more boring.

Corrienation · 06/05/2023 17:17

I was there and the most of the viewing areas closed at ten am.

There were tens of thousands of people wandering around. The procession was much smaller. Most people were in good spirits: lots of people had travelled from different continents and countries to be there.

The difference between the two coronations is that we can all sit in the comfort of our homes and watch it. Especially when it's pissing it down.

The public area numbers are restricted - once they reach a certain cap it's closed and they're directed elsewhere.

This.

The crowds were huge for the Queen’s coronation due to not many people having tvs.

My dad was in his teens at the time of the Queen’s coronation, but lived outside of London so he didn’t see it, and he didn’t know anyone who did either. He has just seen his first coronation (on tv) today.

Let me see Prince Andrew. They were good friends with that disgusting peado Jimmy Savile Rolf Harris. Moutbatten had a well known penchant for young boys in Sligo before the IRA blew him up.
A comparison to some southern states does not make racism ok.
No chip just not blinkered.

As far as Andrew goes you really need to read a dictionary. Paedophile is not the correct term and makes you look foolish.

Apologies if I have mixed you up with another poster but Andrew is not a paedophile.

I watched for about 5 mins becaseu I wanted to check the crowd for myself

V thin - maybe 4 deep where there is a crowd and nothing by Admiralty Arch
The route was shortened too because they knew there would be lower numbers

Over 250 000 000 for this ?
And peaceful prearranged protesters arrested ??

We went at 8:30am, couldn’t get close because they closed off The Mall, Green Park, Whitehall. Said they were at capacity.

Huge crowds trapped on Piccadilly desperately trying to find a way through. We saw glimpses through a gate but the security guard then stood in front so none of the DC saw anything. Even the police were saying it was chaos.

I’m finding it hard to believe it was accidental that Harry’s face was obscured by the whacking great plume on Anne’s helmet? It’s like the candle Meghan was sat behind - I’m guessing to knacker up them selling the photos.

We noticed that too! Obscured behind Princess Anne’s Robin Hood feather! 😂

Camilla always looks like she's just been plonked down 😆
Charles has waited a very long time for this moment so I think he should enjoy his moment. I'm no royalist but I don't hate them either 🤷🏼‍♀️

Yes Camilla looked completely gormless until she had the crown put on her head and then turned into the grinch with her cat-got-the-cream grin! 😆

@DannyZukosSmile

I can see a crowd of about 100,000 there. In fact I doubt it’s even that many. Out of a country of 65 million odd, 100,000 symbolises bugger all. You get nearly that up and done the country every weeken watching local football teams.

In 2003, 1 million marched in London against the Iraq war - twice. Now that was an impressive crowd, though people still correctly pointed out that 64 million odd didn’t march.

anotherside · 06/05/2023 17:56

exactly. Ireland’s elected ceremonial head of state for example is extremely popular. I think he has always has a favourability rating of 70%+ compared to Charles currently around 50%.

Complete rubbish. The viewing areas were full and blocked off by the time we rocked up. The crowds were huge. They weren’t letting people through to see it - even to the screens in the parks. I got the impression they had massively underestimated the numbers. So many people who had travelled for hours (us included) didn’t get to see anything except the Fly Past.

He's hardly thrashing about the carriage in fury. It's been LITERALLY organised with military precision. K and W have tons of help. I'd be pissed off if they were late too. The stress on everyone not to screw something up was immense. He's allowed to have a rant to his wife about his son messing it up.

Probably down to a last minute poo from Louis

@SleepingStandingUp it was not me who said this was a rant. I simply shared the video

I agree, I commented that it was odd their carriage had to wait for the Wales's

Crikeyalmighty · 06/05/2023 18:12

I do feel a bit sorry for camilla- she looks the least likely person to comfortably wear a crown. It's bit like she had popped to John Lewis for a nice mother of the bride outfit and then added a crown as a finishing touch.

playgroundwarrior · 06/05/2023 18:16

I'm a republican but thought it was beautiful. The music and choirs, particularly. Obviously the setting too. Nicely done!

Fererr · 06/05/2023 18:54

I will say the music at the coronation was marvellous.

Greenfairydust · 06/05/2023 18:57

I thought it was all a bit boring.

I can't stand the archbishop or Penny Mordaunt (having had the ''joy'' of working with them both...)

I thought Andrew's presence was inappropriate.

The sight of Johnson, his ghastly wife and Truss was also rather repulsive.

Charles looked grumpy throughout and Camilla uncomfortable.

Apart from Princess Anne and her amazing outfit (and cleverly used feather...) and riding skills, the rest of them were a charisma-free zone.

People reading from notes was also ridiculous.

Queen Elizabeth was great and Charles compares really badly...

GlitteryGreen · 06/05/2023 18:59

I sort of felt the same but honestly think it was because of the (obvious) absence of the Queen.
Throughout all of our lives she has been the focus of this type of event/celebration and it just feels like there is a huge piece missing. It was weird for processions etc to end with the arrival of Charles when we are so used to him just preceding the Queen.
I guess it will just take time to be able to think of him in that light. He has big shoes to fill, she was a huge presence.

NessieMcNessface · 06/05/2023 19:04

I thought it was a beautiful and pretty flawless occasion, the planning and execution of which I’m still trying to get my head around. The music was phenomenal and the tradition and pageantry spectacular. To see four thousand representatives of the armed forces from the UK and Commonwealth marching in the parade afterwards was breathtaking and moving; for me anyway.

The streets looked absolutely packed out to me watching from home, but I don’t know what the official figures were.

underneaththeash · 06/05/2023 19:09

I thought the whole thing was exciting, we went over to a friend's house with kids - rink champagne, ate loads of food and had a great time. I loved the pomp and ceremony.

No chip just not blinkered.

Before Saville died, there was only some unsubstantiated rumours of his sexual abuse and Saville had successfully taken out a superinjunction as well. You're looking at history backwards because at the time most people either didn't know about such rumours or didn't believe they were true.

We only had evidence once he died and had an inquiry too.

Rolf Harris case was not too long ago, but most people absolutely did not suspect Rolf of paedophilia.

AFAIK, the allegations against Mountbatten were and remain unsubstantiated.

Neither of these sets of allegations and cases suggests the Royal Family themselves were complicit in sexual abuse. Even Andrew's case doesn't suggest that. Knowing someone OR knowing of someone doesn't axiomatically mean a person knows or suspects them of being paedophiles.

It's absurd to state the British Taxpayer is "paying an obscene amount of money for paedophiles to walk amongst us". We're clearly not.

What you're doing here is using two different logical fallacies in an attempt to try to discredit the Royal Family, British State and the British people. Those fallacies are Guilt By Association Fallacy and Hasty Generalisation Fallacy.

As far as I can see, there was no reason for you to rant the way you did in this thread. Nobody was posting about Americans. 🙃

"ceremony, outfits and music were beautiful. Tbh, anyone saying it's boring is a bit uncultured, sorry. You can still appreciate the history behind it"

This - it's part of our culture, it's history, tradition - it's important. And if you don't care about that just appreciate the beauty of the setting the fabulous choral singers, and the gospel choir who we're just perfect.

HerMammy · 06/05/2023 19:19

Not particularly interested but surely he could have stepped aside for his son and let there be a young monarch rather than 74 year old, makes you wonder about his need to have the position rather than carry on pottering about or whatever 74 yr old mega rich ppl do.
