My new car is too bossy

I got a new car a couple of weeks ago. It's pretty (if already muddy) but the bossiness is never-ending.

If I change lane on the motorway and there's a car next to the lane I'm going into, it flashes up hazard lights on the dashboard and wing mirror, beeps loudly and nudges the steering wheel away.

When I stop the car, it flashes up a reminder to check the back seats for people and belongings.

And the final straw: it sent me a text reminding me to lock it. I was sitting in it at the time, minding my own business in the car park Confused

AIBU to find this annoying? I particularly dislike it screeching and wrenching the wheel round when I'm changing lanes. It's dangerous!

Mine tells me to put my hands back on the steering wheel….. when they already are!

It also warns me if I am moving within the lane in a way it considers inappropriate, but it doesn’t nudge the wheel.

Butterflyfluff · 06/04/2023 19:48

It crazy!

The parking sensors on mine beep if there is a spider within about 10 metres

Shouts if I drive for more than about 2 hours

Flashes if I’m anywhere near the car in front

It’s counter intuitive as you just end up switching it all off 🤬

happyumwelt · 06/04/2023 19:50

Mine once helpfully pointed out that the car in front of me in a queue had moved off and that I should follow, ignoring the fact that there was a pedestrian crossing in front of me.

Xrays · 06/04/2023 19:51

I have a 2 year old Kia Sportage and the fucker is always having panic attacks when I reverse even when I’m not even bloody close to knocking anything and the other day it beeped and flashed up with “consider having a break?” - I had a google when I got home as never seen that before and apparently it has some weird driver alert system where it monitors your eye movements and the way you drive and suggests having a rest if you’re driving slightly differently to normal! I’d only been driving 20 mins!

pictoosh · 06/04/2023 19:51

Yep dh's car has patronising technology installed. We both hate the stupid, anxious bloody thing.

Eileen101 · 06/04/2023 19:51

Sounds awful, my husband had a company car with all those bings and bongs and lights. They drove me up the wall, I had to get him to turn the steering wheel jerks off because it was so off-putting! I much prefer my old and very basic Kia that doesn't have any mod cons.

gingersnappz · 06/04/2023 19:53

I hear you! Mine tells me not to forget my phone when I take the keys out of the ignition!

GingerAle1 · 06/04/2023 19:55

Modern cars are dreadful with this sort of thing
mist of it can be switched off though.

Ballyhoobird · 06/04/2023 19:56

Mine judges me and my driving. Scores me out of 100 at the end of every trip and gives patronising tips on how to improve. The kids are obsessed with my scores too.

Swearytoddler · 06/04/2023 19:58

My car is a 13yo basic model and I had a new courtesy car recently. I couldn't even plug in and car my phone with it needing me to sign up to something and I was most annoyed it kept putting full beams on!
I was glad to get my old car back!

abstractplantpot · 06/04/2023 20:00

OMG. OMG. OMG!

my car flashes a warning to check the back seats! I've had it back to the dealer twice! They keep saying nothing wrong with it!

Is it really only telling me to check for fucking people!!!!

Jesus wept! I feeel like a fecking eejit now!

TheYearOfSmallThings · 06/04/2023 20:01

Mine is the same. BING! Your handbag is too heavy. BING! It is a bit cold outside. *BING!" You could be overtaking this massive articulated lorry in a more eco friendly way.

I did not ask for your advice, car.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 06/04/2023 20:03

If you keep the seatbelts clicked in as if someone was in them it might shut up (mine does at least).

RudsyFarmer · 06/04/2023 20:04

My partner managed to turn down or turn off a lot of the crazy shit my car was doing. It was so distracting!!

My favourite was when it threw up a STOP! sign on my dash when I was quietly slowly down in a traffic jam. Emergency braked itself to a stalled, stop and nearly forced the car behind to smash into the back of me. Brilliant! 🤦🏻‍♀️😒🙄

Couldyounot · 06/04/2023 20:06

Mine tells you off for selecting N rather than P, because it might roll away. Thanks, car. I've been driving for 30 years, or put another way, about 26.5 years more than you have existed. I know what neutral is.

If the steering wheel keeps taking over it means you're not indicating when changing lanes.

If you watch any crime thrillers you must always switch on the house lights and always check the back seats. If you don't do either you die. Please be more grateful your car doesn't want you to die 😉

Does anybody know if you can turn rear parking sensors off or turn the volume down (fiesta?) Im deafened every time I put it in reverse even if there's nothing behind me.

Shudder. My kids would love this. Please share the model so I can avoid at all costs.

We had a Tesla on holiday and the level of information provided triggered sensory overload in about five minutes.

RudsyFarmer · 06/04/2023 20:08

My car also doesn’t like it when I move past stationary objects by the side of the road. It would prefer it if I slammed into the back of them.

gamerchick · 06/04/2023 20:16

Think I'll stick to my 11 yr old car me like....

EndOfEternity · 06/04/2023 20:27

Loving this thread. Been thinking of changing my 11yr old car but thinking again now. Sounds like the days of a quiet drive may be over.

Pinkmoonstars · 06/04/2023 20:32

Ours flashes up ‘pre collision warning’ in red and beeps very loudly at us every time someone pulls out in front of us and it considers it too close for comfort. It’s obnoxious.

DashboardConfessional · 06/04/2023 20:33

We've recently bought a 10 year old Mini and it's amazing for this. No screen, no bluetooth, just a welcoming "Buh buh boop" when you put the key in and fancy interior lights with 10 choices of colour.

MushMonster · 06/04/2023 20:33

I think I rather walk, thanks!
Give me an old fashion car and I wil be safer than with cars that move the flipping steering wheel on their own!
Now, texting you! That is not normal, who can possible have the idea that a car should text the driver!

DashboardConfessional · 06/04/2023 20:34

In seriousness - this is all going the wrong way. Imagine the accidents in 20 years if these all become automated actions with no driver override.
