To be gobsmacked at Kate Ferdinand complaining about not getting a Mother’s Day card from her then-boyfriend Rio’s children

When she’d only been living with them six months, and moved in when they’d been together less than a year?! And their own actual mother had died of cancer?

I get that she was already taking a great deal of care of them and would have appreciated some acknowledgment of that, but this is just taking the piss.

That’s actually awful. If I’d been him, that would’ve been the end of the relationship. That day should’ve been about him supporting his children through handling the death of their mother on Mother’s Day - any woman who had capacity to sob about not getting enough recognition from those children would be out the door so fast the wouldn’t have had time to wipe their eyes.

Thinking of herself before the children just shows what she's like!

Yes I couldn’t believe it either. It would be ridiculous and narcissistic even if the children’s parents were divorced, but their Mum had died, and not very long ago either.

If I were her I wouldn’t ever expect to get a Mother’s Day card from those children. Fancy resenting kids who’ve lost their Mum for not getting a card for their Dad’s new girlfriend on Mother’s Day, when their own loss will be highlighted.

I haven’t read the story about this. Sounds awful though. You’d think someone with a basic level of empathy would realise it would be a hard and confusing day for the children.

I often find that the OP on these kinds of stories twist things and when you dig a bit deeper, the person actually was very rational and reasonable but it’s taken out of context. That is not the case here. What she said is bafflingly unkind and self-absorbed.

My DS is technically my stepson. His mum died when he was a toddler. He asked to call me mum when he was 8.

Some mother’s days he made me a card and asked DH to sort me a present.
Some years he totally ignored it.
Other years he stamped about the house and told me “you’re not my mum!”

And each and every year I told him I loved him and it was ok.

I cannot imagine ever having been stroppy or in a huff about his decision.

I find them both distasteful tbh, I'm not surprised about this revelation.

Rio was obviously in a bad place when she got the claws in and hung on for dear life. If she has produced her own DC I wouldn't hold out hope for the original dc getting a look in. She seemed to be v pushy at the time, sainting herself all over the media at a time that should have been about his protecting and helping his dc heal from the loss of their Mum.

As a football fan of a certain age I only know Ferdinand as a former player and the occasional newspaper/magazine article with his new wife. Just had a look at his Wiki page - he seems a bit of a dope with questionable past behaviour, and not someone to be admired.

I remember her from TOWIE and was surprised at her new persona when being with Rio Ferdinand. She was nothing like what she tries to portray now...

With others yes but not with her. She was very young when Rio was with his wife and she was with Dan Edgar. Don't make things up

Completely up to the children whether one day they will see her as a mother figure and decide to get a card on their own accord, no prompting or doing it for them would be appropriate.

Deeply saddening. I was very touched at Ferdi’s portrayal of his and that of children’s grief after their loss. Kate didn’t come across well in that documentary. Worth a watch.

I went off her years ago when she said the kids called her mum. This wasn't long after there mum had sadly passed away.

I know someone who was very close to his ex wife. She always says that she would be absolutely horrified by who Rio has shacked up with now and the way everything is sold to magazines. His first wife was very sweet, unassuming.

But isn’t Rio the one who had taken out a super injunction for cheating on her?
