Did I just hear Sunak promise to investigate inappropriate and unsafe sex education in school?

I don't really listen to priminister questions, but I was just channel hopping waiting for the kettle to boil

So IABU to dance a little dance?

YABU - no you misheard, he didn't say that/ he said it but it is meaningless

YANBU - yes you heard it, yes it means something, dance away

Place marking as I’ve been out all morning and haven’t seen the news.

Nimbostratus100 · 08/03/2023 12:23

It wasn't in the news, it was in Prime ministers questions

Not sure how to confirm what is said in prime ministers questions, I hope it is recorded somewhere easy to access, and we can look it up - if no one else on Mumsnet was listening more closely than I was

You can check Hansard, which has a verbatim record of all proceedings in the house. Probably wait till tomorrow to give them a chance to get the transcription up!

nutbrownhare15 · 08/03/2023 12:25

He mentioned a review of RSE to commence asap

VikingVolva · 08/03/2023 12:26

Yes, he definitely said it in PMQs

And something will happen. But unless/until inappropriate is defined in this context, it might not amount to much

ExtraOnions · 08/03/2023 12:27

Depends what you consider “inappropriate and unsafe” - primary age children learning that some other children have same sex parents is fine. Children learning about what is and isn’t ok when it comes to people touching them if is fine.

i do get confused by the pearl clutching

I have a number of friends who were sexually abused as children, maybe if they had been educated on what was happening to them, it may not have carried on. They didn’t have the language or context to explain what was happening.

Dammitthisisshit · 08/03/2023 12:27

I have no idea but the answer is always to dance. Dance away. If you’re wrong you can change it to an angry dance.

FourTeaFallOut · 08/03/2023 12:27

Yes he did. Mariam Cates doing sterling work again.

In the Guardian live notes;

Miriam Cates (Con) says sex education at school can include graphic descriptions of oral sex. Sex education is not age appropriate. Will the government carry out a review?

Sunak says he has asked the Department for Education to ensure that children are not getting information that is not age-appropriate.

I suspect that isn't the issue.
Kids are being told far more inappropriate things by outside trainers who subscribe to gender ideology.

lifeturnsonadime · 08/03/2023 12:30

I would imagine it is in response to this story. www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-isle-of-man-64811129

No child needs to be taught that there are more than 70 genders and no 11 year old needs to be educated on anal sex in 'graphic detail' as one parent put it.

A child who argued that the 70 genders was wrong and that there were only 2 was asked to leave the classroom.

I bloody hope this is investigated. It's indoctrination based on a quasi religious belief and has no place in school.

I heard something about it being run by unauthorised organisations and people who campaign to undermine parents

I didn't hear anything about oral sex.

I wasn't really listening

Won’t someone please think of the children! etc

Prestissimo · 08/03/2023 12:32

@ExtraOnions I don't think anyone would suggest that learning about safe relationships and different types of families isn't okay. The prompt for these recent concerns has been things like 11 year-olds being taught about the existence of 73 genders and sent out of class when they dared to question it. And similar-aged children being taught about the mechanics of masturbation and anal sex, which I'm pretty confident lots of teachers as well as parents would feel oversteps the mark. And the third party organisations who provide outsourced material (and staff) for schools to use in these lessons and what their agenda may be.

Well yes, it's called safeguarding.

Prestissimo · 08/03/2023 12:34

@lazycats I can't decipher your tone but given that we're talking about mainstream education and safeguarding then yes, I think we should certainly be thinking of the children

It’s more than what you have mentioned. It’s teaching them about BJs and how a girl gives them, it’s about anal, it’s using drag queens, etc. If you think this is Pearl clutching then fine. But perhaps you need to do some reading first before calling people names.

FourTeaFallOut · 08/03/2023 12:43

No one would disagree with this. But RSE is outsourced by schools to agencies who are not Ofsted inspected and who have their own agendas to push. This has resulted in things like the ' dice game' where different body parts / objects are on two dice and children are told to describe a sex act involving the two items the dice throws up.
Not only is this not what RSE should be about, it erodes the ability and confidence of girls to say 'No' to sex acts they don't want, as not only have they got misogynistic violent porn influencing them and boys, but they also have schools promoting 'novel' sex acts, which normalises them. RSE should be about building up confidence to assert boundaries, not eroding them. And RSE should not be about promoting different sex acts to 'try these at home, kids!' . It really shouldn't!

It also means people like the 'gentlemen' who has a business providing RSE and who has on his website his answer to a 16 year old girl pressured into having sex for money and who had not liked it, and who told her how rewarding sex 'work' could be and she needed to find better clients, are able to get an 'in' into schools as no-one is really doing due diligence on who is talking to kids about sex and relationships and what they are saying.

This is about age inappropriate and false information being taught, it's not about denying the existence of homosexuality, or ignoring basic and correct facts, or info about staying safe.

Anyone teaching children that there are 73 genders and about how to safely choke their partner or perform anal sex should be shot sacked, frankly.
